    AIDET is an acronym for acknowledge, introduce, duration, explanation, and thanks. You are supposed to use this system with every patient, every time.

    Some terminology I've come across in psych: B52= 50 of benadryl, 5 of Haldol, and 2 of Ativan (nearly a staple of all psych admits!) F. U. B. A. R. : effed up beyond all reason (usually those so high or drunk they have no clue what's going on) Growing wings: those patients who are looking for a way to elope the locked unit Hidden treasure: the crazy things we find in crazier places... My fave was the mp3 player (complete with headphones) in a woman's nether regions... Bed bound: someone in restraints And happy hour. When night time meds were given out lol.

    If you don't get hired in that floor, take just about anything med-surg to get your foot in the door. Once you gain more experience you can always transfer to a better position. Good luck!

    Do you give tech to tech reports? Where I work, techs give each other a report than get a report from the nurse where we typically go over diet, blood sugars, bathing and toilet in needs, and activity needs. Regardless, it's still the responsibility of the nurse to make sure you are well informed of the patient and their needs..

    What Nedrn said was right on. In my short experience traveling, your recruiter is most important! I feel they make or break an assignment. Also, my first assignment was psych. It was with a small company and actually paid more than my very stressful med-surg assignment with a huge hospital and huge company! I found my first job via Indeed and I also found that by asking a recruiter for a specific speciality they were able to find ones not always listed online. I say take the jump and try it. If you don't like it, it's only about 13 weeks to deal with! Good luck!

    As a former cna and a current rn I'm sorry you've had this experience! I could not get through a day without my cna's help! Unfortunately, there does seem to be a disconnect between nurses and aides, and it is seen in every nursing specialty. Don't let it get to you and affect how you perform on the job, because that will come down on you! Try talking with the nurse privately. If nothing changes then you could go to the boss. If you have staff meetings, it would be a good place to bring your issue up! Good luck!

    I was able to secure a full time med surg job with my float experience to med surg and er while working full time psych. Make friends, you'll need those references later!!

    IV Insertion Difficulty

    I so feel you with this one. I can never get my own iv's but can FAITHFULLY get everybody else's difficult sticks. Maybe it's mind over matter and we're really just psyching ourselves out! I have noticed though that within moments of sticking a patient, I know whether or not it's going to work. I've found that digging rarely helps. Remember to stick to the 2 stick rule: Try to get the IV in 2 attempts, then go find somebody else. That way you are still getting your experience in and not putting the patient through misery.     Having traveled with a very large company and a few smaller ones, the smaller ones paid better and the recruiters were more personable and helpful, IN MY OPINION. My mother also travels and her best experiences, pay and like of the company, were with hospitals that hired travelers themselves without going through the middle man. My favorite so far has been Sunbelt Staffing. My mom's favorite is Banner Health. I'm currently with Nurses Rx, a company owned by AMN and while my experience hasn't been awful, I will most likely go back to Sunbelt. I think your experience is mostly based on your recruiter.     NedRN, thank you. This current assignment is 5 weeks from ending at a Level 1 trauma hospital, floating on 7 different floors, ranging from med surg, transplant, trauma, ortho, cardiac, neurology, and nephrology. I don't think 5 years of experience would prepare somebody for this job haha but being very adaptable, good in emergencies, and doing alot of reading on days off has helped. And never being afraid to ask for help if you are unsure about something!!! There were some meds and scenarios I was unfamiliar with and wanted to become more knowledgable. It would be a job I wouldn't have been able to do without the serious prior cross training. I'm excited to see where this new adventure takes me.

    Thank you all for the informative comments! I am finishing up my first psych travel job and will be beginning my second traveling job in a med-surg float pool. With enough references of the time I have spent floating to different medical floors, I received a job offer! So it is not completely impossible if you've actually done the work. Thanks again!

    I understand what you are saying, and I'm more than happy to go get the experience. The hospital I was working full time as for the past 3 years has put my license at risk far too many times to stay there and get that experience. Nurse to Patient ratio was up to 14 patients a nurse. Only 1 rn in the entire 22 bed unit. The entire hospital was poorly run. I am more then willing to work in psych but was wondering during if there are opportunities for cross training or anything to increase my medical experience while traveling.

    I have the experience though, just not on paper. I've floated to cardiac, ER, med surg, surgery. I have the skills and I can take off on the floor running. I've been floating to other floors more than I work on my own floor.
