oh I see, yes you may have a little trouble because of that but maybe if you apply for a fellowship residency program after you graduate, then that may be the way to be able to get in, since you ve had prior oncology experience. You re not interested in neonatal nurse practioner? I have a friend who is doing that program at UTMB and she loves it! But I completely understand your concerns and I can see how the FNP track could be a better route for you. I think you have time to research and decide. Its a tough decision. Keep us posted!

@Telma-I was re-reading your posting, maybe you should do the acute care setting instead, even over the FNP, if you would like to continue in the hospital and not specifically in a primary clinic whether hospital based or private.

I work at MD Anderson Cancer Center. The departments are specialized in their own area, and they have hospital primary clinic settings. With the adult gerontology primary degree you can work in a private clinic or hospital primary clinic. Just like the FNP degree, with the exception of pedi or women care. but this degree is not only specialized in geriatrics like it used to be. It now focuses on adolescents, adults and geriatrics.

My plan is to work at my hospital's outpatient clinic. I dont want to work at a private setting.

Adult gerontology Primary Care Degree will allow you to treat adolescents , adults and geriatrics. The degree was changed i believed in 2013 and so it is no longer only for geriatrics. In my hospital there are many agpncp who see patients in the outpatient clinic as well as in the inpatient setting just like the FNPs, This degree is no longer only for geriatrics patients like it used to be. if you re interested in acute like ICU or ER you may not be able to do it with this degree not even with the FNP, you would have to be specialized in acute care. But if you re interested in the outpatient setting, or in hospitals along as is not an acute floor, you should be able to do it with this degree.

    UTMB FNP 2017

It seems like us who applied around Thanksgiving had issues with the system and application was lost in space. Its going to be a longer wait now as they re closed for Spring Break. So much for applying early. Hope we dont have to wait all the way to June to find out!
