Perhaps each nurse could aquire our own reusable mask -much like we do our stethoscope- but from a list of "approved" models. I know of a hospital which is using reusable N99 masks on the COVID floors. In between patients, the nurse wipes the exposed part of the mask down with purple top wipes. At the end of the shift, the nurse washes the mask with soap and water in preparation for use by the next shift. They attend an inservice and fitting. The mask in use looks something like this: As for GOWNS: One hospital where I worked used washable isolation gowns which were washed in house in the laundry room, We can return to that and hire extra laundry personnel in an emergency.

You can get a doctor's note. The doctor will not refuse. Send an email through their contact portal listing your risk factors- that way your request is documented. My doctor called back immediately and insisted that I accept a note excusing me from work altogether because even non-COVID floors are risky (colleagues can have it and be asymptomatic and we don't have a large break room, bathroom, or locker-room to maintain the appropriate social distance)

Of patients age 0-44 there have been 3 deaths per 100,000 people in NYC. That is a 0.003% death rate.

On the highly publicized deaths of the exceedingly rare younger patient "with no known risk factor" Even though there is no KNOWN risk factor, there could be undiagnosed or undocumented risk factors. CDC collects data "on presence or absence of underlying health conditions and other recognized risk factors for severe outcomes from respiratory infections" https://www.CDC.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6913e2.htm There is no mention in the above link of screening for vaping or substance abuse. Anyone who has taken care of substance abuse patients knows that they are a vulnerable population and can be quite young and their families may not be aware. It would not surprise me to hear that they succumb to this virus at a much higher rate than others in their age range.

California: On March 30, 2020 Governor Newsom issued Executive Order N-39-20, authorizing the Director of the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) to waive any of the professional licensing requirements relating to healing arts licensees in Division 2 of the Business and Professions Code, and any accompanying regulations. This includes, but is not limited to, the examination, education, experience, and training requirements necessary to obtain and maintain licensure, and requirements governing the practice and permissible activities for licensees. The Board of Registered Nursing is working closely with the Department of Consumer Affairs to determine which licensing requirement waivers would allow individuals to continue assisting with the COVID-19 pandemic and allow licensees regulated by the Board of Registered Nursing to maintain and renew a license and remain employed. Current waivers in place are: Examination and continuing education requirements for current healthcare licensees.Reactivation requirements for inactive, retired, or canceled licensees.A full list of waivers will be placed on the DCA website as they are approved. The Board of Registered Nursing encourages licensed Registered Nurses to be part of the workforce to support the medical surge during this time of need. The state is in need for help at quarantine sites, testing sites, and medical surge facilities and needs assistance with pre-hospital triage and pharmacy services. Interested medical and health care professionals are encouraged to visit covid19.ca.gov/healthcorps/ for more information and to register for the California Health Corps. The Board of Registered Nursing thanks licensed Registered Nurses for doing their part during the COVID-19 health emergency.

Your statistics are wrong. Maybe watching too much MSM? Fatality rate of people who have symptoms is 1.4% at worst https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/16/lower-coronavirus-death-rate-estimates/ and there are many people who were infected and asymptomatic. We will be able to find out how many when the antibody test is widespread.

On average in the USA the number of deaths DAILY is: 123 from suicide130 from opiod overdose490 from accidents and injuriesIf 200,000 people die in the US this year from COVID-19, that is about the same as the number of lives lost annually to accidents and injuries. If 2 million people die in the US this year from COVID-19, there will still be 325 million of us left. We are not in danger of extinction from COVID-19.

Interviewing blues
Are there still grad nurse jobs out there that are not residencies? I graduated 2012 and I don't remember applying for any residencies. The hospitals all hired new grads- mainly med-surg night shift to start. We had orientation for several weeks (12?) with a preceptor and then we were on our own. If there are any rural hospitals within commuting distance, try there. The site of my first job still advertises signing bonuses for new grads.

Age discrimination happens but I'd wager that research would support that people over 55 do not job hop nearly as much and will never be out for extended maternity leave. And perhaps even do not call in sick as much??? (I have left multiple jobs with weeks of unused sick time in the bank... I only call in sick if I am sick. I wonder if anyone has ever studied sick time use by age?). Found a chart on sick calls by age. Over 46 years old 41-44% call in 0 (ZERO!) days in a year. Good deal for the employer! If there are any hospital bills associated with this, you should not have to pay them (nor your insurance company). Take it up the ladder for that concession at least. They need to cover all medical expenses for their error.

Smokers make health and life insurance premiums higher. If the employer is paying for these, I can see why they would screen. (Though I think some of the hospitals that screen may do so for religious reasons. I applied to an Adventist hospital and the recruiter told me right up front that they are a nicotine free employer) I live in an area with lots of military. The military will kick people out if their BMI is too high or they don't pass physical fitness. People work hard to remain qualified (or not, and they lose their job),

1:3 ratio is a nice ideal but is it reality? The ratio can be 1:4 on a PCU even in California. The California ratio law apparently does not apply to PCU's but to a "stepdown unit". The large hospital where I work does not have a single "stepdown unit". It does have multiple PCU's and the PCU is staffed with the mandated telemetry ratio of 1:4 unless you have a vented patient, then you will have a 1:3 assignment. Looking at job ads, I have seen PCU jobs in other states stating 1:5 ratios in the ad.

New Graduate
My first job was at a rural hospital. Apply at rural hospitals and commute. Stay for at least a year. I stayed 3 years and future jobs were very impressed with that- they like hiring someone who has a track record of staying in a job. Apparently it is rare.
