  1. Just got accepted! What are my next steps? (Sheridan College)

If you don't have your immunizations they may be able to do blood work (titres) to determine if you have been immunized already. I had records of my immunizations but my school (McMaster) still wanted the titre levels. I had to get a booster shot of ...
  2. fall questions

If there are no apparent injuries and vitals stable, we leave a note for the md so when they come to do weekly rounds, they are aware. If there is an injury that needs to be assessed, they go to the emerg to be assessed (we are connected to an emerg ...
  3. Good option for packaging medications for camp?

I'm not sure if this would work, but you could ask each camper that is coming to blister pack their medications at their pharmacy prior to coming to camp. I have several campers who have a lot of meds and I love when they blister pack their meds for ...
  4. Habits you picked up from work...

I always put my cell phone in the L side pant pocket. I've tried to put my phone away at home and dropped it on the floor. Also, we have keys for everything in LTC, even the bathrooms. When I work acute care, I'm constantly patting my pockets down fo...
  5. Wheelchair brakes a restraint in LTC?

I've never heard of this but at my work, tilting someone back in a wheelchair is considered a PASD which is a personal assistive safety device. Bed rails, even if they are partial or are only there for mobility aids are considered a PASD. I'm wonderi...
  6. Tools for opening medication packets?

What about a milk big cutter? No moving part and safe for the pts if they grab it.
  7. We empty garbage if needed. We try to strip linens and do a quick sweep through the room after it's empty to get rid of IV tubing, o2 tubing, odds and ends. If we don't have time, the housekeeper will. We make the beds though after it's been cleaned....
  8. Had a coworker with cardiac history not work nights. I'm not sure all the details. They wore a nitro patch during the day with no issues but on nights, wouldn't have the patch on and would clutch his nitro spray all night.
  9. How long is your commute?

6 mins to one hospital (depends if I hit the one stoplight in town) and 27 mins to the second hospital. I work at both sites. It's all country driving so I know my exact time. Only traffic is a slow car on the road (c'mon at least do the speed limit)...
  10. Accidently took home a patients' insulin!

It happens. Just wait till you have gone home with the narcotic keys. I usually end up with eye drops in my pocket. I've learned to do a full pocket pat down before leaving. I've also gone home with the nursing cell phone.
  11. MAR how should it read?

The doctors don't always know what dosages the med comes in. They should just be writing the dose. In the LTC that I work at, the order will be written at the top (give 12.5mg of metoprolol) and then we have a spot that has additional info below tha...
  12. New Grad 5 days orientation

I find one of the biggest challenge is how the residents get their meds. Who gets them crushed, who gets them whole on pudding, who needs them one at a time etc. If you are going to be floating, maybe come in a bit early to talk with the previous shi...
  13. On Call

My work does on call from 2300-0700 but only for the emerg department being really busy or if there is a transfer that needs to go out. We get paid something like 20 cents an hour but then if we get called it, it is automatically time and a half. We ...
  14. Med Pass Question for Student

This is what I do in LTC if I think the pt won't take all the meds. I give the most important ones first. Pain meds, BP meds, heart meds, blood thinners etc and then the laxatives and vitamins.
  15. Administering Fentanyl

I've mostly seen it in a transdermal patch in LTC. I've also seen it used once on a medical floor IV once but we tend to use dilaudid or morphine IV.
  16. HELP.Giving magnesium sulfate T.I.M

When I was in school 5 years ago, they never taught us to landmark on the hip or buttock. We always did thigh and deltoid.
  17. What happened to MOM?

Our MD has changed all Colace to senekot. We also use peglyte and Lactulose as daily bowel meds. We also use fibre rite. MOM is my go to PRN bowel meds, followed by a dulcolx supp if ineffective.
  18. Ontario Nurse, please help looking for work.

I managed to get my nursing job in a small rural hospital by emailing the manager. I had sent in my resume to hr but the only hr person for the hospital was on vacation for two weeks. I sent an email to the manager, she called me the next day and I s...
  19. Passed Canadian NCLEX w/ 75q

Congrats. I'm glad that you were able to get the results so fast. I wrote the paper version in 2011 and we had to wait 6 weeks for the results. Welcome to the nursing field.
  20. What nurse life-hacks do you have to offer?

Hanging a gravity IV med in LTC with no pole. Used the mechanical ceiling lift to hang the IV off of.
  21. New grad unable to find job in Ontario

It is a big step. I didn't have a car when I got my first job 9 hours away from home. I ended buying a used car and paid it off pretty quickly. Rural nursing, depending on where you are, can qualify for tuition assistant programs.
  22. 5 Ways Night Shifters Can Sleep Better Now!

I've learned to listen to my body on days off. I sleep in if I want to or go to bed early if I'm tired. I also live alone so I can do this. Sometimes you just need to sleep in. Benadryl or melatonin does nothing for me
  23. New grad unable to find job in Ontario

Try rural. Even a few hours north of Toronto maybe. Don't give up hope. Did you try with the new grad initiative? I can't remember the website but it is a program that orientates you for 6 weeks to 6 months with the hope of hiring into a position aft...
  24. Nurses and their pens

I just use whatever pen is laying around. I worked LTC for three years and only had to use a pen for report as everything was computer charting. I lost my habit of keeping a pen in my pocket. When I went back to acute care last year with all paper ch...
