  1. Are Student Nurses Prepared for "Real Life?'

Exactly what my BSN program does -- it focuses very very heavily on critical thinking and gives us the knowledge to think our way through a situation. There are many hospitals around the country that have done away with hiring ADN nurses for this re...
  2. Are Student Nurses Prepared for "Real Life?'

There are a lot of downfalls of some ADN programs focusing so much on clinicals and very little on the theory.
  3. What age do you plan to retire?

I am not picking the exact age of 60, but I would love to shoot for the age of 60 or mid 60's. My partner and I have already started putting money away for retirement and I am only 24. I have watched a lot of Suze Orman (haha!) and she has said over...
  4. Are Student Nurses Prepared for "Real Life?'

I agree. I think many experienced nurses forget what it was like to be new. I have had nurses roll their eyes at me when I ask a question -- sorry, but I would rather be safe and ask questions. I am doing my practicum in the PICU and I must say that...
  5. What age do you plan to retire?

I am still very young but I plan on pursuing medicine and I figure I will be done and out of my residency/felllowship mid-to-late 30's. I think practicing medicine until 60 is a good age. I absolutely LOVE to travel, thus I plan to put a lot of oney ...
  6. Are Student Nurses Prepared for "Real Life?'

Thankfully I have worked as a nurse apprentice for nearly a year and the nurses I work with usually allow me to take care of 3 or 4 patients -- thus I think I will probably do fine when I graduate. I will obviously still need orientation and a precep...
  7. Please Keep Our Friend in Your Thoughts

I enjoyed reading that! :) Although I agree with you -- I must say I am an exception to that rule. I am very level headed and absolutely will not take any physical risks in life. I've seen the results of people (specifically - males) who do stupid t...
  8. CI references

You can definitely land a job without CI references. I am definitely not using my CI as references, and I don't know anyone personal who is. But I live in an area where there are many many jobs.
  9. Please Keep Our Friend in Your Thoughts

This doesn't suprise me. Alcohol + Fireworks = bad. I hope your friend is ok. And I hope whoever did this to him faces consequences (ie, charges against him).
  10. I love my hospital!!!

I was actually looking forward to going in but I would have been bored out of my mind. I will be up for a long time tonight though because I slept all afternoon thinking I would be working all night.
  11. Shortage of instructors = waiting?

My school bases their admissions on how many clinical spots they can get at the local hospitals.
  12. I love my hospital!!!

My manager called me off tonight (I work as a nurse apprentice) because there were only 5 patients and they had 3 nurses and a CNA.
  13. IV Vita K

Oh.. my bad. :) Totally misread that post.
  14. IV Vita K

I am suprised hospitals still allow K+ pushes.
  15. Average KAPLAN scores and passed NCLEX

Thanks for the info! I have been doing practice exams (Kaplan, NCSBN, etc.) and usually manage 65% - 70%. I have no idea what that equates to in terms of passing the NCLEX, but you made me feel a lot better. Thanks! :) And congrats on passing!
  16. Seeking CNA earn while you learn....kind of.

I don't live anywhere near you, but usually the State Board of Nursing has a list of approved CNA training programs. You can either find it on their website or call them to send you a copy. I know that some LTC facilities will train you to be a CNA ...
  17. SP CVP Insertion?

Did you call and ask for clarification? I was rotating on an adult ICU floor and one of the nurses got into some trouble (not sure what happened to the nurse but mgr took her into the office) because there was an order an MD wrote and the nurse didn...
  18. Drawing SVO2's from PICC lines???

  19. These docs are gonna fight!

I have never seen docs argue, although you can definitely feel the tension between certain specialities.
  20. Calling all nursing theory Advocates!

I actually have not learned any nursing theories, with the exception of some theories in community health (which are not nursing theories, but rather theories on public health). I have heard of some nursing schools who focus very heavily on nursing ...
  21. Better pay if Bilingual?

I agree. There should be no problem conversing with them or asking them how they are feeling, etc. I also plan on learning the language to the fullest extent. I have many many Spanish speaking friends, thus when I get a good base down I will practice...
  22. has you hospital become an amusement park

My hospital is fairly good about backing up their staff. However, I was working with a nurse one day and she had a drug-seeking patient who was there for a legitimate cause (reverse colostomy). The patient was on PCA dilaudid, PRN morphine, and fenta...
  23. There is no dress code for classroom appearance but when in clinicals we obviously have to wear our scrubs with white shoes. Women are supposed to wear their hear in a pony tail. Thankfully my school is fairly liberal and realizes there are more imp...
  24. Better pay if Bilingual?

I agree with kcalohagirl -- when it comes down to speaking in medical terms, it is essential to get an interpreter if you are 100% fluent in Spanish. The hospital I work with actually requires any staff member that plans on speaking to clients in an...
  25. Better pay if Bilingual?

Purchase the latin america version if you plan on interacting with the Mexican population.
