Psych nurses: What have you learned from working with substance abusers?
That they are full of tricks to get a controlled high in the beginning and you have to be on your p's and q's no matter how "nice" they are to you....just saying what I am saying

How to get hired if experience is necessary
Start looking at New Grad Residency programs. With these programs you earn while you learn with some hospitals requiring a signing contract after doing a 1 year residency program.

Heel slipping in nursing clogs
Oh ok...the closed back....when you said clogs my mind immediately went to open backs...I wear two pair of socks with my slip on cause if I don't my slip on becomes a flip flop which is not good during a code when I have to move fast!

Heel slipping in nursing clogs
At my nursing school and now at my job we were not allowed to wear clogs....so you might want to return them now before you even start your clinical rotations and have worn the shoes and are forced to keep them due to store policy about worn shoes and clinical policy about no clogs

New Grad...Is this typical?
Yes it is typical....believe me you....you will get orientation on all the things you named! The hospital won't allow you to touch the patients without knowing what you do and don't know....I am a new grad/ nurse in orientation right now. The closest I came to starting an IV was on SIM man....hehehehehe....and blood draws did not happen at all in nursing school...gave meds, only did IV pumps when I had a nurse who was willing to let a nursing student get some real life experience...which wasn't often....so don't fret....you will be trained!

Mom of 4 - can I handle nursing school?
It won't be easy, but any dream worth filling won't be easy! You can do this and you ain't old! Only thing gets old is shoes and those come back in style....just everybody on the same page....your hubby can't be looking ugly in the face when he has to pull more than what he thinks is his share. Hey I went back and got my degree in Nursing and yes it meant that I had to pull late night hours after getting the kids squared away but it was well worth it when I marched across that stage and passed NCLEX and went from making $8 an hr to $33 dollars an hr as a new grad!

Inmate/Staff Relationships
My sister worked with men's correctional for 30 years and retired from the same facility she started with....she was not having it...she always made it plain....y'all can't do nothing for me up in here making pennies and can't do nothing for me on the outside when you can't get a j-o-b ....so step off....they didn't mess with my sis! Hehehehe....had another sister to work with men's correctional for 15 years they didn't mess with her either....she had the same spill as my other sister....so it is done every day not to fall for inmates but it is done just as often as those ones who do fall for inmates. My sister said you have to be intentional about drawing the line daily!

Please advice, Can't find a job in MD, Got a BSN with 9 years experience out of USA
This is very surprising! Your tech job spot hasn't offered you an RN position now that you have passed NCLEX? Look in to refresher courses for nurses....how long ago did you receive your BSN? The refresher courses are offered at all Community colleges....

Job fair?
I personally have no experience but know of 4 classmates that got their first jobs at hospitals...1 in ER...no experience but did clinicals at the hospital and 2 were LPNs and got ICU and ER....and the last on med/surg floor...my first job I got via applying for open staff nurse positions...all of the job fairs that I was interested in out right stated...not intended for new grads!

What does an addictions nurse do at work?
It is not a walk in the park that is for sure! But it is rewarding....you do everything from passing meds to teaching, leading groups, being a referee to being a punching bag! It is not for the faint at heart....cause you will be called everything but a child of God sometimes!

This week I have learned (6/20, a day late)
I also learned that no matter how much you correct people that you aren't the new charge nurse and they look at you as if they know something that you don't, and you learn you are the only nurse working that shift, you are indeed the new charge nurse by default....hehehehe! Talk about rude awakening!

Not so sure about the job offer now...
What does that gut feeling tell you. Go with that! Be careful of those that change the rules once you accept the 1st rules.....usually it is one of those bait and switch traps....but you still have options...don't leave that PRN position just yet!

HELP! TXBON Advice Needed!!!!
Dear OP, I thank you for this not so pleasant lesson. I just received my license in March of this year and it will expire in November of this year...I thought it was a mistake until I read on my BON site their policy on renewals....any way Nursys offers reminders about license renewals of which I have been saying I will sign up for but haven't as yet. Thanks to your testimony, I will be signing up for this email reminder TODAY! I know you were seeking advice of which I have none, but just wanted you to know that what has happened to you has been a lesson for those of us that are in this boat of license renewal in the same year that you obtain your license.

Depressed about a job offer
Take it from someone you was in your position not more than 2 months ago...you will make the right decision for your family at this moment. I had to give up my dream 1st job due to schedule conflict and car share issues....but guess what....I had a even better dream job drop in my lap not more than a week after I had given up the first. God had better for me but I had to keep the faith that all things were working for my good and my families good too. My SO was being a butt too, but that was him just being fearful and not knowing how to advise me on what to do cause I am "the baby momma" and he wanted his baby to have his momma at night but he didn't want to block my journey but things worked out! so I say all that to say this....continue to go on job interviews, something even better will come along if you have patience and keep the faith!

nursing school is hard
Calm down first....what I told students when they say they studied for weeks and still did not get the result they were expecting is that especially for seniors.... You are beyond rot memory...now is where you have to apply that knowledge and critically thinking about the information at hand.....or they were getting jacked up in SATA type questions....I reminded them that patients you see in the real world come with more than just one thing wrong with them so attack those SATA type question in that mindset....I understand you being worried about you already had your one repeat however being worried will put you on a path that you don't want to travel......take one test at a time and be intentional about blocking out the negativeAnd just do the darn thing! You got this!

Post NCLEX Nerves
Yep, been there had those feelings in March/2015..... But guess what....those test results are gonna come regardless if you are anxious or not so try not to fall into that trap....take one day at a time and when you see the results you will deal with whatever may come cause you really don't have a choice! Here's hoping everything works in your favor! Let us know either way!
