What does an addictions nurse do at work?
I should probably mention it is an inpatient facility.

What does an addictions nurse do at work?
My agency just called with a new contract at drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility. I think it would be a nice change of pace since I've only ever worked in LTC but doing something new is kinda scary at the same time. What does the nurse do in a facility like that besides pass medication? I don't want to say yes to an assignment I'm not comfortable with.

For anyone curious, I spoke to my agency today and they had called the facility. Long story short, the facility denied anything ever happened. My agency keeps notes of all the calls so they have it all on record because the facility called them after hours and so did I when the incident happened. It's all noted even though they're now denying it.

That's something I don't understand. If a CMA can't take a shift for a nurse why are they allowed to be on call? But yes I agree, there were many factors that made me choose to stay and that was one of them. I didn't call her to replace me though, their scheduler did.

Thanks for the reply. I plan on talking to the business office with whom I am employed tomorrow as the person I spoke to is just the on call person and I plan on asking my boss to call the administrator of the facility who also told me to go home. I also plan on asking for another facility to go to because I don't appreciate being threatened by a facility I bend over backwards for because they're short staffed. I am also not a member of a union but I do have nursing liability and malpractice insurance. Not sure if that matters. I'm staying because I'm fearful of losing my license. I just didn't know if the threat was legal.

Say you come to work running a temp and hacking up a lung, you're seen in the ER during your break, the doctor states you're really sick, prescribes two ATB and breathing tx's, and writes you a note to be off work for 48 hours because he doesn't want his patients getting sick. The staffer calls the person on call to come cover for you whom is a CMA. Technically there isn't a nurse on the floor (because it's long term care) if she covers, but there's 4 nurses down the hall in the hospital if needed which is fully attached. Can you get in trouble with the state for job abandonment? As a new nurse I don't understand all the legal things. The nurse in question is me and I chose to stay against doctors (and the administrators) orders because I was informed that I would be reported for job abandonment. Also I should mention I work for an agency and the DON told my boss that I've been late and a no call no show many times which is a lie and I told my boss to please investigate that claim. Can anyone give me advice or is this 'no mans land' for the forum since it's a legal question. Which I would understand if it is.

1. 40 max bed. 33 in house right now. 2. Roughly 1:17 during the day 1:33 at night. 3. 1:7 during the day 1:17 at night 4. Yes 5. Yes 6. No however I do work 8 hours overtime every other week due to short staffing voluntarily. 7. 12 years as a CNA and 1 as an LPN 8. Mostly. There's always room for improvement. 9. Yes. Rehab to home, long term geriatric, psych, and Alzheimer's. 10. I'm contracted as agency so I make more than some of the nurses there. I make per diem and it averages out to roughly 23/hour. 11. Help: Which states allow an LPN to Determine death?
I'm an LPN in Kansas. I can not pronounce death however I can chart lack of vital signs, fixed pupils, etc and that so and so doctor on call pronounced death at this time. What happens is I call the doc, report my assessment, he pronounces death and gives the order to release the body verbally, I write the order for him to sign when he visits the facility which is usually less than 24 hours later. I don't need an RN or a second opinion on the matter as I am usually the only nurse in the building as I work long term care in a small facility. It might be different in a hospital, hospice, home health, etc. I've never worked in the those settings to tell you for sure.

I'm not going to say you can or cannot handle being a nurse because I don't know you but I want to mention that I am diagnosed with ptsd, gad, bipolar, and mdd. I am a nurse and I wouldn't have my career another way. Yes it's stressful and yes some days I wonder why I am in this field (we all have them) but when I have a patient tell me their whole day is better when they notice I'm their nurse it reminds me that the stress is a minor part of the job compared to the major impact I am having on my patients and their health. My suggestion is to apply at a different school with a fresh outlook and get into therapy, if you aren't already, to learn how to manage the stressful situations that you will undoubtedly encounter as a nurse. It is absolutely possible to be a nurse with psychological disabilities.

Don't Know Where Else to Ask This
I had the accessing my chart problem once. The mother in law, who can not stand me, became my doctor's nurse. She wasn't the scheduler but did have access to my medical record and would lie to my doctor about things that were not true (the worst being alleged drug use by me when I asked for some help relieving pain from a slipped disc) and I didn't find out about this until another nurse asked me if I had an addiction problem when she read it in my chart. She knew the nurse that entered it was my mother in law and that we did not get along. The office personnel were able to lock her out of my chart, my hubs chart, and our kids' chart. We then switched providers in the same office (small town) so she was no longer our nurse. Haven't had issues since.

Nursing school with Child Neglect Indication?
I may be wrong but if it's not on your record I see no issues because they won't know unless you tell them. It shouldn't be hard to contest that. DCF has to look into every case reported no matter how small or ridiculous. I see no reason why that would go any father than just being looked into.
