  1. Plan of Action

I think it would be odd for you to go to school to be an NP and then work as an RN after. NP experience is even more valuable for NP jobs, so if you end up as an NP you might as well TRY for NP jobs first instead of immediately looking for RN jobs. Y...
  2. I've been reading through some threads, and it seems a large number are people desperately looking for preceptors so they can complete clinicals. I wondered how widespread this problem is, and starting searching online - my results were astounding. T...
  3. NP working as RN?

Many nurses, especially those with experience, make more as RNs than as NPs. Unfortunately, what a lot of people don't understand as they go rushing into an online NP program, is how there are just so many programs available now. Some accept a low p...
  4. Minimum level of experience for FNP

Admitting that someone NEEDS nursing experience before going to NP school is admitting that NP school does not do a good job of preparing providers. If schools required as much clinical as PA schools, we wouldn't need to have this discussion. More cl...
  5. Chamberlain College of Nursing-FNP...accepted!!!

Apply to regular schools too. Education shouldn't be about what's fastest or cheapest. This is a huge investment, and taking the time to research and apply to good schools will be worth it in the long run.
  6. Any currently employmled NPs that graduated from Chamberlain?

There is no way to answer this is they haven't had a graduating class. All I can say is that there are SOME people who have a bias against for profit schools, and will not hire people from there. There have been people posting on this very forum that...
  7. Petition to Force NP Programs to Provide Preceptors

That's very interesting. By their own document, all of these schools that require students to find their own preceptors should not even have accreditation. How on earth are they getting around that?
  8. Chamberlain College of Nursing-FNP...accepted!!!

Is it all paper writing and discussion boards? Even in pharmacology and pathophysiology as well?
  9. Looking back, would you obtain NP credential??

If your FNP took only 9 weeks I am terrified. That's absolutely ridiculous and I don't think anyone should be allowed to practice with a 9 week medical education. If you meant 9 months...honestly that's not much better. ..
  10. Petition to Force NP Programs to Provide Preceptors

Wow, yes it's very pathetic. The AACN needs to get their act together. Does no one ask them about this or try to change this at the national level? Do none of the people who have power at the AACN care about this huge disparity which is quickly becom...
  11. Online FNP.. How long? How much?

Cost effective, GOOD medical treatment. One does not learn this going to a poorly prepared NP program, especially a for profit school.
  12. Petition to Force NP Programs to Provide Preceptors

Its so bizarre to me that people defend lackluster NP programs. These issues - online for profits, self administered clinicals, etc - are the reason physicians don't respect NPs. Its the reason many educated patients request only MD providers. Its th...
  13. Petition to Force NP Programs to Provide Preceptors

With one very, very important distinction: with the PA and MD programs, selecting your own preceptor is simply an option. With most of the NP programs, it is a requirement and the student must either do it or leave the program. That's an important po...
  14. UMSL or Maryville? (Saint Louis)

Here's a review I read on an allnurses thread about maryville: "I began Maryville's FNP online distance program in may. I have worked 60 hrs most weeks and get my homework done during the week at work so I am able to spend my home time with my family...
  15. Petition to Force NP Programs to Provide Preceptors

This is exactly what it looks like at most schools that don't secure preceptors, and your story is not uncommon. Unfortunately, it's becoming the norm as schools realize they can get away with providing education without spending the time and money o...
  16. I'm honestly just happy it seems the accrediting boards have finally said no to a program. Are they finally seeing how oversupplied the market is and starting to actually require standards for accreditation? My mind is blown.
  17. Interview for Minute Clinic

Question: is it true that you don't work at just one store but go to CVS all over a geographic area?
  18. UMSL or Maryville? (Saint Louis)

Maryville is for profit. Don't shortchange your education to save one semester.
  19. What is a reasonable new grad offer?

Sounds great then. I'm glad you countered, especially with the vacation time. You will be happy to have that! Good luck at your new position! To all NPs: let this be a lesson. Do NOT take the first offer. Almost all employers first offer the lowest t...
  20. Petition to Force NP Programs to Provide Preceptors

No one is saying finding your own preceptor is always worse, just that due to lack of oversight it makes it easier for people to have lackluster clinicals, which is especially important in online programs where there is little in person teaching. The...
  21. Petition to Force NP Programs to Provide Preceptors

I'm going to Columbia. They provide preceptors. Did you even read this thread? I think the practice is bad for the profession overall, it has nothing to do with my program.
  22. Petition to Force NP Programs to Provide Preceptors

Myelin and Dranger - glad you stopped by! Always refreshing to see a few sane posts. You are correct this is clearly not the place to look for like minded individuals who actually see the cliff this profession is heading towards.
  23. Because the vast majority of pre NPs do absolutely 0 research and actually choose their program based on advertisements and tv commercials? Because most people here value speed and ease of admissions of education quality?
  24. Looking back, would you obtain NP credential??

Incorrect. I will be attending Columbia University this Fall. But truly I am not an NP, so take my opinion however you wish. I still respect NPs a great deal, it is only because I care about the profession and wish to ensure it's success that I try t...
  25. Petition to Force NP Programs to Provide Preceptors

You get no refund. Your graduation is delayed or you simply don't graduate at all. Outside of allnurses there are hundreds of horror stories of people having to drop out because of this. It's really pathetic and proves that some schools are just in i...
