  1. Hello everyone! NYC school nurses are expected to use a log titled "Diabetes Documentation Form" but some nurses think it could use improvement, so I've been wondering what other nurses have been using. Do you use a specific log for tracking of all diabetes documentation/treatments? Do you find that it's useful? Is there anything you would change? TIA
  2. If all I had to do was one small section, I would probably put something about flu season as well, even something about cold vs flu because parents and school staff think EVERYTHING is the flu when winter rolls around.
  3. Lucky you! I feel that as the years go buy, admin looks for mor e stuff for me to do . Sounds good! I'll try to round up a few things and pick at them for relevant information. I like decorating my bulletin board with a theme related to the time of the year (if that makes any sense), so maybe i'll take that route with the newsletter.
  4. No paper being used here... We email almost everything. But I love the idea of using links! Maybe we can do that on our school's website. Thanks, Flare. :)
  5. LOL! Very true! My admin has caught onto technology and the newsletter will be emailed.
  6. Hi fellow nurses! It's been a while since I've been here. Hope you're all doing well. I come asking for some assistance... My school's admin would like to send out a newsletter from the school nurse, touching on topics like nutrition (eating breakfast, taking vitamins, healthy food choices) and cold/flu season. Have any of you ever done this? What would you put in your newsletter? TIA
  7. Whoa I haven't been here in forever! But these kids are already annoying me with their fake illnesses lol. And I just had a kid call home because of a stomachache/general abd pain. Mom came to pick her up and asked if we could call an ambulance for her so she could be seen quicker at the hospital. Lord give me patience.
  8. Still here too... currently trying not to spaz out on the nonsense walk-ins that keep coming through my door... woooooosaaaaaah

Is it just me or do stomachache complaints annoy others as well??? I work at a middle school, so think about kids ages 11-14. Not even 10 mins into Monday school day and I have a child c/o stomachache. Then I get another one the next hour. I took him to the more quiet bathroom and guess who feels much better after using it?! 5 mins after I get rid of him, another one comes c/o of... guess what... a STOMACHACHE. Winter break needs to get here already cuz I'm about to explode.
  10. Still working summer school... 8 more wake-ups left! Soooo rocking my pink today

I work in a 6-8 school, and I start when the kids start, which is at 8am. I am expected to work 6 hrs and 55 mins, so I leave at 2:55pm. 8am-2:55pm, for a total of 32 hrs per week (30 mins deducted for lunch each day).
  12. Woohoo! Congrats, and welcome to the party! I am a NYC school nurse. I work under the Dept. of Education, but was oriented alongside DOH school nurses. I went through orientation back in 2013. When I was hired the orientation process was about a month and a half long. You'll watch a bunch of power point presentations and eventually be sent to a school to precept. When that's all done and over with, they send you to your assigned school, but I was given my assigned school before orientation so maybe they changed things around. If you have any questions, you can always PM me :)
  13. I am sooooo over this year... I received a rude remark from a staff member here yesterday and I've been working on diffusing myself and avoiding all contact with her at the moment. I've also been getting back-to-back med room visits... It's so busy in here!!!

This salary range was when I first started in 2013... I am still in the same school and have received a few raises thanks to our union, as well as experience and education differentials. I am now making about $62k/year+ additional $$ if I work summer school. Base pay now is about $58K.
  15. We didn't have a school nurse in my K-8 school. Our health/PE teacher who was also a secretary was the one who took care of us when we were sick. I remember several visits in 2nd grade because I used to get really bad headaches. She would put a cold paper towel on my forehead, loosen my hair, and call my parents to pick me up. When I ended up getting glasses, I never went back. In HS, I only went to the nurse once because I didn't feel well (but still not sick enough to have to go home) and knew I could whine my way out of school with my dad lol.

School day started 15 mins ago... Student comes aknocking at my door with a pass that states his complaint is "face." I see no s/o injury, or any type of rash, so I'm obviously confused, and slowly getting annoyed... After asking him repeatedly to clarify he tells me he hit his jaw with the corner of the computer cart... YESTERDAY! C'mon now!

    What in the world?!?!
  18. Yea, you have a point... I did like having extra pocket money the last time I worked summer school.
  19. I am! NYC school year ends June 28th and then summer school for special needs students runs from July 5th- August 15th... I am slowly regretting my decision to work summer school

I'm here until June 28th... And then I might be working summer school until August 15th... What is wrong with me???

I was so happy it was Friday... Thought I'd be able to finish my documentation... Boy was I wrong... How does a child manage to get pencil lead stuck in his forehead, HOW?!?!? LOL.... I'm so ready for the weekend!
  22. It's so nice to hear that at least ONE school nurse is appreciated. I have a small school as well, about 250 students. Have been here two years, and not once have I been shown any type of appreciation by the administration/staff here. Most ppl employed here think they know my job and always want to put their two cents in when they think a student needs assessing or when they disagree with my assessment findings. There's a bulletin board outside the main office titled "Wall of Knowledge." It has a picture of every staff member (school aides, IT guy, and parent coordinator included) with the name of the colleges they graduated from. Guess whose picture isn't on that wall... yup, MINE! It's a darn shame. Already received an e-mail reminding us that Teacher Appreciation week is coming up, I rolled my eyes at the e-mail, lol. Oh and guess what, NY nurse here! LOL, what a coincidence. I think we need to move elsewhere. Sorry for the rant
  23. My school is one of those schools where you hardly see students; I have busy BUSY days, but mostly slow days. I still see lots of nonsense complaints along with my frequent fliers. Most of my frequent flier visits decrease once I call home and the parent scolds their child over the phone. There are still a handful who just don't get it and it doesn't help that staff doesn't seem to get it either. There's one kid that's always here and as much as I say there is NOTHING wrong with him, it seems administration doesn't understand. Sadly we live in a time where everyone is too petrified to tell a kid to sit his butt in the chair and stop bothering the nurse because everyone's too afraid that the parent might sue them. I think the only way we can shift school culture just a little bit is by toughening up our kids and reaching out to their parents, because some school staff and administration just don't get what a real medical issue is.
  24. We're not even allowed to wear scrubs... We can only wear business casual... In my school, staff is allowed to wear jeans on Fridays, so I def take advantage of that. I do miss donning my scrubs though. Would save me a lot of time having to figure out what to wear each morning:sniff:
  25. Thanks for the congrats! Have you heard back from them? My day-to-day is pretty much the same. I work in a small school so it's not too busy, the most students I've seen in a day, is about 12, and that was only once. Bigger schools would have higher numbers. The school I was training at had about 1000 students and we would see about 30 students/day on average. There's a lot of paperwork and documenting, but nothing to drive one insane. Hope all is well with you!
