Brownie, Spoken like a true liberal Democrat. You need to come to Guam and see how the true abuse of the welfare system works. We always focus on the poor unfortunates who can't survive without welfare. Why don't we look for the ones who did make ...
I am retiring after 22 yrs in the military in August. I am now 43 and plan on working maybe 10 more yrs at a civilian job and then calling it quits. Looking forward to lots of golf and travel.
Since working in a NICU, I get to witness the problems first hand. As medical professionals we seem to jump on the illegal drug cause and effect bandwagon rather rapidly, but research supports that at least 5% of all neonatal deaths are caused by mo...

Really depends on what their motive for going into nursing is. If it is for money the answer is no, but there are reasons that I would recommend nursing. It beats mowing lawns or getting shot at the local convienence store.
Good luck. I only have a little experience with unions and most were non productive. Now you even have less money because you are paying your union dues and just think your money is making someone at the top of the union very rich.
Hey Rick, My name is Larry. I have been a nurse for the past 16 years. I am from Texas but am in the Navy stationed in Guam at this time. I retire in August after 22 years in the Navy. I have worked in many areas of nursing and have a few initials...
Chris alot of what you have said is true, but I have to disagree a on couple of issues. Respect is earned, I don't care what kind of degree you have, you have to perform and prove you know what you are doing. Granted, there are different degrees of...
The pay in South Texas is that good right now. I was offered a job a manager of a NICU starting at 125,000 with benefits and with a 10,000 sign on bonus. My wife was offered a staff nurse job in the NICU starting at $35.00/hr with the same sign on ...
I have made this post in the past but will reinterate the issue. The Phillipines is the largest exporter of Nurses in the world. To enter the profession in the Phillipines is seen as a way to get out of the country. Some of their schools are excel...
Hey Buck, There are some BSN Programs that are tailored for people to obtain their BSN while giving credit for other degrees that they have, Regents College is one that comes to mind first. Maybe some of the nurses from these types of programs don't...

Navy Nurse replied to Charles Young's topic in General Nursing
Haji, I guess the first thing I would ask you would be why would you want to go back in the Navy. You are already getting retirement pay and with the civilian jobs paying good right now, I don't understand why you would give that up. Especially to ...

Send me your questions. I have been in the Navy for 22 years and moonlighted in the civilian world too, so I can give you some views on both. Tim, I don't have anyone tell me when to eat or get up. Each sector has their rules to follow and believe ...
Following my previous post, I do not understand why this happens in civilian nursing. Most civilian nurses are in areas that they plan on staying in. There is no real competetion to move up unless you desire to. Most pay raise are length of time r...
It is interesting that this happens. I can give you one opinion as to way it happens in the Navy. When you join the Navy as a Nurse you are instantly in competetion with other nurses. We get annual fitness reports that play a hug part in promotion...
Even under "Safe Haven" you can be sued in civil court. I have seen it used a few times in my career. You can also file variance reoprts with your risk manager. The hospital has to answer these and can be especially useful when inspectors are comin...

Reading the post in some of the other topics has been a real eye opener as to how we feel about nursing. We must realize that this board represents a small number of nurses and may not be indictive a all of nursing, although it is interesting to see...
You read some of the post here and you will see that education is of no importance, so lets just give the boards to whoever wants to take it and if they pass, then oh well they are an RN. After all they would pass the same test that we all did.
No where is smoke on clothes causing resp problems more prevelant that in a NICU or nursery. We have had infants have severe reactions when their parents came in to visit after smoking.
Hey don't worry by the time you start your job and get to put up with the sleepless nights, depression, poor pay, eating disorders, homocidal thoughts, lawsuits, and the list goes on, you will forget about your student days completely.

A nurse is a nurse is like saying a doctor is a doctor. Get real, the one aspect that nursing really needs to pursue is specialization. The days of having a little knowledge about everything should be gone. Nursing should be specialized just as th...
