  1. Has anyone ever escaped?

I thought you meant patients escape. Then yes, I have had a patient or two escape. Lol. I'm still here though
  2. Long hair unrestrained at work

I have hair almost to my butt. I always wear it up. It's just a pain in the rear end when it's down as it is, can't image dealing with it while at work, with all the bending etc it would get dipped into something gross. I also shed like crazy and wou...
  3. Police Holds

As another poster said, any patient in police custody has an officer with them in their room at all times. They are usually shackled and/or handcuffed. That is their job. It is only my responsibility to provide medical care. I have never dealt with a...
  4. PATIENTS BECOMING MORE ABUSIVE?? anyone agree?

I feel too young to be saying this, especially as a part of the dreaded "millennial" which have a bad rap for being selfish. But I believe society as a whole is getting more entitled. The Burger King "Have it your way." Nobody wants to hear the word ...
  5. I shouldn't be a nurse

When I was a new nurse, another new nurse had a situation occur that most likely resulted in a patient's death (I was not closely involved). I never judged her, there by the grace of god go us. It could be anyone that this happens to. Therefore, as a...
  6. stroke/brain bleed

I'm not sure but what about a subdural hematoma? Is that considered a brain bleed?
  7. What is this condition called in bariatric patients?

The patient that was dead had most of his panniculus on one side. However the alive patient laid on their back most (I presume). When we turned the patient to look at the skin on the backside, I noted two of these areas on either side of the patient....
  8. I was involved in helping clean a dead patient. The patient was extremely overweight though I'm not sure exactly, however we are talking 500+ lbs. The nurse I was working with was more experience and said, "Look at this. This is something you might n...
  9. I never answer the phone if they all me. I listen to the voicemail and decide if I want to call back.
  10. What is this condition called in bariatric patients?

Yes the second patient I saw it in was alive, a new admission.
  11. What is this condition called in bariatric patients?

I googled lymphedema and elephantiasis in the abdomen and it might be this, although it both cases these patients did not appear to have an infection or any reddness / purulent drainage. Obesity-Associated Abdominal Elephantiasis
  12. How to get in the zone?

I think one of the good things about being a nurse is that time often flies. Before I know it I'm 4 hours into my shift and almost halfway done.
  13. Healthcare Facilities running out of medications + supplies

    Lotion
  14. Worked a late shift and had a patient who was admitted by a specialty service. It was about 11pm and patient wanted his eye vitamins NOW. (he usually took them with HS meds, but when inpatient a lot of MD's won't order vitamins, especially weird ones...
  15. Dealing with drug seekers without alienating them

It doesn't matter whether they are drug seekers or not. You are going to drive yourself crazy. Like another poster said, it's not healthy for you to "go to war" with these patients. We are not going to fix them on an acute hospital admission. If you ...
  16. Do you clean bedpans or throw them out?

I always toss the dirty bed pan. Then I take the trash bag to the utility room so it doesn't stink up the room. I'm not about to have poopy water spray up in my face or on my uniform. I'm sure the bedpans cost like 75 cents each. Chux cost more.
  17. Yes, in an emergency. For example newly admitted diabetic states "I need to eat, I was in the ED all day and my blood sugar is low!" (usually in this case the blood glucose is between 200-300 lol) and they don't have orders I will check a blood gluco...
  18. Just wanted to second this. Often other nurses will go on break and those of us left on the floor are scrambling to keep up with call lights and patient needs. Then we fall behind and aren't able to take OUR breaks. I appreciate the right of everybod...
  19. Let's Resolve To....

This is a professional goal for me. To smile, nod, offer a sympathetic word or two, and remove myself (whether physically and/or emotionally) from the situation, and maintain a professional demeanor. This goes for both patients and co-workers. These ...
  20. Demanding patient wanting me to page MD about insignificant issue.

Yes but what about when it gets around to a manager who is very invested in patient satisfaction?
  21. Veterinarian, veterinary technician, or botanist. I've found nowadays I like plants & animals more than people.
  22. Demanding patient wanting me to page MD about insignificant issue.

I told the patient I would leave a "sticky note" (a spot on the EMR where we can write non-urgent messages to the MD) about the vitamin but the patient was not having it. Since it was close to shift change I punted it to the on-coming night RN ... no...
  23. officially beginning RN career in Med/Surg

Med-Surg is a specialty that can work you into the ground but you will learn so much. You won't know what bone tired means until you've spent a day running around the floor on a busy day. I have been in this specialty for 2 years and I still am build...
  24. I wish they had to stay and watch the chaos

Do you work where I do? It's not unusual for me to discharge 2 and get 2-3 as admissions or transfers. There is no way to provide excellent nursing care in these situations. The patients get what I can give and that's it. It's a crying shame.
  25. IV pushes

I have read stories of patients going deaf from too fast pushes (Lasix if I remember). Medications can be dangerous if given too fast.
