  1. Geez I can't tell you how many times I've had students tell me they took Advil/Ibuprofen because they have a stomach ache. No I don't mean menstrual cramps either. Some don't even know the the brand names and generic names let alone that Tylenol is in every other thing on the shelf. They took Dayquil that morning plus Tylenol for a headache and they Sudafed Cold+ for the congestion. Nope. Nope. Nope.
  2. I've never worked at Alta Bates, however, I've very familiar with the hospital and the area. My nursing program is in partnership with Alta Bates so they share space up on the hill. -Unsafe area: Just because it's Oakland doesn't mean it's unsafe. Major eyeroll here. The hospital sits on a hill and it it's own island basically. -They pull you to other hospitals: I know nurses at both Alta Bates hospitals (Berkeley and Oakland) and I have never heard of someone being pulled off a floor in one hospital and being told to go to the other. You can take the shuttle in between, but driving might end up being a 45 min to hour drive with traffic. -Parking sucks: They built a whole new parking structure. It's awesome and so much more space. There's at least 4 parking garages. -The shuttle service is unreliable: For the 2 years I spent there in school I maybe had an issue with the shuttles a handful of times. I've gone back to my school for trainings several times and used the shuttle. Still reliable in my opinion. Overall, Alta Bates has been known to have issues, but what hospital doesn't? Honestly, I've heard more concerns from nurses over at Marin General. Alta Bates also has a new patient tower which is fantastic. Also, don't be late if you don't want to get yelled at.
  3. I worked as a Camp Nurse during the summer I didn't work. That would be a great option. Wasn't much, but paid the bills.
  4. Do it! I was taught about it in high school (all girls catholic school!). The even gave us this awesome gel mold of a breast that had one lump you could feel and another you could only see if you held it up to the light to hit home that just because you can't feel it doesn't mean it's not there.   5. Thank you so much and you're totally right that I can't account for the other facilities technique. The only exception I have made is if it's placed at our Public Health Clinic because I know that nurse and I will fill-in for her if we're closed for break. Plus I can easily look up the information in our EHR to confirm time and where placed.
  6. Millennial here Before lumping us all in a stereotypical group, please remember what generation raised us Any who, this is where you appeal to the educators need to educate. Ask to sit down with teachers before the school starts and do an in-service on what you can and cannot do. Educate the educators is the best solution for most of our problems. Also, give them a quiz. Enforce the no cellphone or talking rules while you talk to them. Give them a power-point and a hand out. Also, keep track of theses teachers and what specifically they aren't getting about your position. Let them know they run the classroom and you run the nursing office.
  7. As everyone else has stated, nursing income is variable. I have been a nurse for 3 years and I'm currently working as a Public Health Nurse making almost 100k in California. My friends who work in San Francisco (20 minutes away) are making $60-70/hour not including overtime and differential. However, I'm also paying $2100 a month to rent a two-bedroom condo and I have a friend paying $4500 for a studio in SF. Regardless, I'm happy. I make good money, I have better benefits than my friends on the floor, and I work a simple M-F 8-5.

  10. Hello all! I'm a RN working a School-based Health Center and we do TB skin testing as well as vaccines. A frequent concern that comes up is students coming to me to get their TB test read after they had it placed some where else (i.e. Public Health Dept. or PCP). Even if they have their paperwork with them, I will refuse to read a skin test placed elsewhere. I came here because my boss (who is a non-medical provider) does not appreciate that I turn away students because the previous nurse had no problem reading them from wherever; with or without paperwork. I politely let them know that they need to return to where they got it from or they can always get it done here for free. I cannot find any documentation on whether or not it's okay to read skin tests that a facility has placed themselves. Does anyone else have a clinic policy where you do not read TB skin tests from other providers and a rationale?

In California, to obtain a Clear School Nursing Credential you must: -Verify possession of a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally-accredited college or university -Verify possession of a valid Registered Nurse license issued by the State of California If your degree/university is not recognized by the California BRN then it wouldn't count. Also, some school districts may require a BSN anyway from my experience. Keep in mind, you also have to return to school to complete your credential so you must want to put in the work and time.

  13. Honestly, If my *future* kids stop believing at 4 I'm okay with that. It's not just about believing in Santa, it's about teaching them the spirit and purpose of Santa Claus. It's not just about gifts. Teach your kids why they should still be good and give even if they don't believe anymore. Christmas is bigger than believing in Santa.

Anyway, back on topic: I have two real twin beds and I hate them because they students love them so much. My last position I had this: Adjustable Headrest Couch - Chrome Steel Legs Adjustable headrest is nice for my heartburn and asthma kiddies. Forget the giant roll of paper. I just wiped it down after each kiddio. Currently, I have stretcher sheets which are like giant chux's to put over my beds that have regular sheets on them and white disposable pillow cases.

  18. Wow. What a jerk. I would ask him if he cleared his demands with the District office and the Superintendent. Was your nursing supervisor there? Are you union? I would request that he puts all his demands and rationale in a letter and once you get it cleared by the District Office and your nursing supervisor then you would be happy to comply.
  19. I know I'm late, but: I went to South Lake Tahoe for the first time and experienced snow for the first time in my life! Thanksgiving was amazing. When up to Heavenly and made my first snowman. Then for dinner we went to a Hotel buffet and I almost had to roll myself back to my own hotel room.

  21. Located in California: Do you get a planning period in addition to your lunch like the teachers? Sort of? I'm closed 8-8:30am and 4-5pm which I guess is my planning period. My last school nurse position I did not get a planning period. This position I have a set lunch time and last position I tried to take my lunch whenever I could, but usually when the students were done with their lunch. Are you required to attend/stay for parent/teacher conferences, in-services, teacher institute days, curriculum nights, open houses, etc? Or are you just there when the students are? Conferences only if I am needed as the nurse. In-services, only if required by the District. Open houses where on a volunteered basis and I had to flex my time. Mostly I'm not needed when the students are around. Are you required to work days before/after the school year? If so, how many? Do you get paid extra for that? My current job I work year-round. Last position I think I had a set amount of days and I believe it was 210 which I spread out during the year including summer school when I worked. Those days are included in my contact so no-overtime. Does your previous nursing experience count as years towards the salary scale? Or do only the years you were certified count? For example, I've been a nurse for 7 years, but only certified for 2, so they only count my 2 years instead of my 7. Yes, but in this position I don't have to be certified although I am a Credentialed School Nurse. Do you carry liability insurance? Oh course. Always. It's like $100 a year. Why not? I spend more on Sephora and Starbucks in a month.
  22. The other issue, is everything is an emergency. I'm only called on the radio for "emergencies" or when a student needs a wheelchair. Most of the time I cannot determine if I really needed to be called until I get there. I got called for a student having a "major" asthma attack once. I get there and the student is sitting down, with inhaler, and headphones in their ear rocking out to whatever they're listening to. Had to make the student take the headphones out of their ear to hear me with out me yelling at them. Teacher saw student use their inhaler and assumed they were having an asthma attack and alerted the safety staff.

I talked to their supervisor and stated that it seems like the safety staff need protocols to deal with emergencies when I'm not here (i.e. a list of conditions that warrant an automatic 911 call instead of relying on me to consult on everything). We did have a recent situation where a student was unconscious outside the health center during our lunch and they banged on the door. However, CPR/First aid certified staff! I was able to only do a BP and a sternum rub to wake the student during the 5 minutes it took paramedics to arrive next to the student.
  24. It's not as fun playing up emergencies like a faux fever as it is saying your child needs a change of clothes.
  25. My union says I cannot be on the radio because that counts as working through my lunch so it needs to be off. I get that emergencies arise, but I deserve my breaks just like they all do.
