Does anyone having issues with the use of the ever popular essential oils? Last year most teachers were using diffusers in the classroom during flu season which caused students to come to me with headaches. The Admin backed me up and has stated that they can not be used when class was in session --only before and after school and with the windows partially opened. Now we have a new staff member who offered me a huge supply of essential oils (she sells them) to use on students. I declined the kind offer and stated that we should not use them on students. Anyone else running into this??
  2. I work in a small school and everyone wears many hats. I am the nurse, PE/Health teacher, Safety officer and substitute if needed. I do not, however, take attendance.
  3. I had a parent who stated that without a doubt her son would die if he even touches a peanut. No doctors note--no epipen--and she packed him peanut bar and peanut butter sandwiches.

Please be sure to document everything encounter you have with her. If you have a conversation regarding this, send a follow up email summarizing what was said and be sure to keep a hard copy in a safe place. You want to be sure that you have covered yourself in case she says "oh nurse so-so never told me that" I agree that the administration should be brought into the conversation too. If she has a seizure and is alone with students , that could be a safety issue as well.
  5. I work at a small private school--I volunteered to teach 9th grade girls Health and we have a blast. I also try to do a health event twice a year--last year I did a backpack weigh in that dealt with spine health and the correct way to pack and wear a backpack... The kids and parents gave great reviews on that event . I talk with coaches regarding concussions and guest speak as a community helper in the first grade. There are lots of things your could do to promote the nurse role in the school
  6. The same thing happened to me--I had three girls (all friends) who were I thought were faking the eye exams. I called their parents and explained my reservations---I also lectured the girls about how expensive eye exams are etc--(trying for a guilt trip) The next day they all came to school with designer frames, no glass. Parent explained that the girls just wanted the frames to match each other. No eye exam necessary as they admitted faking the test.

I did call my local NAMI office and left a message but did not receive a response yet. Yes we are private but we do partner with a local counseling center. I will call them to see if they can help. I just hate reinventing the wheel. Thank you
  9. We have always sent out a letter to the entire grade when a student has been found with lice. We don't name the student but parents are made aware.
  10. I have rewrapped splints also especially if they are too tight---I do not "buddy tape" and I do not have xray vision to tell if something is definitely broken. I had a student come see me after PE because the teacher told her she "jammed" her finger. It looked more than that and I called mom. Doctor visit confirmed it was broken and a splint was applied at their office. She was sent to my office before a game so I wrap it without the splint so she could play--that I would not do. The coach did though and she was put in the game.

We are in the process developing a suicide policy for our small school. If anyone has one they would like to share with me please let me know. Thanks
  13. I have a new student this year with a "deadly allergy to peanuts". First day he comes with no Epipen even though the health form says he needs one. Called the mom who said that her life is really busy and he will bring one the next day. Next day he brings in the Epipen with a peanut bar and a sticky note attached that says "in case he gets hungry". I looked at the boy and said "you know you can't eat peanuts right?" He said "yes. she always does this--i think she is trying to kill me" Called the mom---and she apologized saying "my bad". Mother of the year----I wanna adopt the kid
  14. Present----since August 18th when my school started. Lots of newer teachers at my school so I am training them as to what constituents a "visit" to the Health Office. Working on sports physicals and immunization reports. My eldest is at college and my youngest is in high school here. I also teach 9th grade health to the girls--fun times. Showed a great video on digestion---right before lunch. This group of girls get queasy fast so this should be a fun year
  15. Happens to me all the time too. Crazy
