Essential Oils
Does anyone having issues with the use of the ever popular essential oils? Last year most teachers were using diffusers in the classroom during flu season which caused students to come to me with headaches. The Admin backed me up and has stated that they can not be used when class was in session --only before and after school and with the windows partially opened. Now we have a new staff member who offered me a huge supply of essential oils (she sells them) to use on students. I declined the kind offer and stated that we should not use them on students. Anyone else running into this??

Completing school attendance your task too?
I work in a small school and everyone wears many hats. I am the nurse, PE/Health teacher, Safety officer and substitute if needed. I do not, however, take attendance.

Munchausen on the increase?
I had a parent who stated that without a doubt her son would die if he even touches a peanut. No doctors note--no epipen--and she packed him peanut bar and peanut butter sandwiches.

Staff Hysteria
Please be sure to document everything encounter you have with her. If you have a conversation regarding this, send a follow up email summarizing what was said and be sure to keep a hard copy in a safe place. You want to be sure that you have covered yourself in case she says "oh nurse so-so never told me that" I agree that the administration should be brought into the conversation too. If she has a seizure and is alone with students , that could be a safety issue as well.

Don't jump on me! But i'm bored already
I work at a small private school--I volunteered to teach 9th grade girls Health and we have a blast. I also try to do a health event twice a year--last year I did a backpack weigh in that dealt with spine health and the correct way to pack and wear a backpack... The kids and parents gave great reviews on that event . I talk with coaches regarding concussions and guest speak as a community helper in the first grade. There are lots of things your could do to promote the nurse role in the school

Faking on vision screens
The same thing happened to me--I had three girls (all friends) who were I thought were faking the eye exams. I called their parents and explained my reservations---I also lectured the girls about how expensive eye exams are etc--(trying for a guilt trip) The next day they all came to school with designer frames, no glass. Parent explained that the girls just wanted the frames to match each other. No eye exam necessary as they admitted faking the test.

Suicide Policy
I did call my local NAMI office and left a message but did not receive a response yet. Yes we are private but we do partner with a local counseling center. I will call them to see if they can help. I just hate reinventing the wheel. Thank you

Old Dude or other Tx nurses...is it true?
We have always sent out a letter to the entire grade when a student has been found with lice. We don't name the student but parents are made aware.

Re wrapping splints?
I have rewrapped splints also especially if they are too tight---I do not "buddy tape" and I do not have xray vision to tell if something is definitely broken. I had a student come see me after PE because the teacher told her she "jammed" her finger. It looked more than that and I called mom. Doctor visit confirmed it was broken and a splint was applied at their office. She was sent to my office before a game so I wrap it without the splint so she could play--that I would not do. The coach did though and she was put in the game.

These parents are killing me
I have a new student this year with a "deadly allergy to peanuts". First day he comes with no Epipen even though the health form says he needs one. Called the mom who said that her life is really busy and he will bring one the next day. Next day he brings in the Epipen with a peanut bar and a sticky note attached that says "in case he gets hungry". I looked at the boy and said "you know you can't eat peanuts right?" He said "yes. she always does this--i think she is trying to kill me" Called the mom---and she apologized saying "my bad". Mother of the year----I wanna adopt the kid

ROLL CALL!!! School Nurses 2017/2018
Present----since August 18th when my school started. Lots of newer teachers at my school so I am training them as to what constituents a "visit" to the Health Office. Working on sports physicals and immunization reports. My eldest is at college and my youngest is in high school here. I also teach 9th grade health to the girls--fun times. Showed a great video on digestion---right before lunch. This group of girls get queasy fast so this should be a fun year

Am I being a jerk
End of the school year and a teacher decides she wants to play an end of the year joke on me. She stayed after an hour and a half after school to wrap my entire desk and work space in plastic wrap. This includes not only my med log but also the key to medications, bandaids, annual release log, basically everything I need to work. I wasn't happy when I saw it but fortunately I had a meeting off campus before I could clean it off. teachers were texting me asking for various things but they were on my desk so no one could get to them due to the plastic wrap. I finally referred all requests to the principal as I was not on site and she made sure my work space was cleared off when I got back. Was I being a jerk for thinking how stupid this joke was and for referring people to the principal???

First week as elementary school nurse
I agree with the above posts---I do not monitor uniform compliance however I do have a very limited supply of sweatpants/sweatshirts (from the unclaimed lost and found) in case of an accident. I always call if I think there will be a bruise. Either I or the teacher will call the parents of Kindergartners for just about everything till they ask us not too but that is because of their age. I also call if I want to alert the parents of the possibility of an injury being worse than what it appears. I always call for head injuries--we are very conservative regarding concussions. Our school is smaller so I don't send a note home.

Go Fund Me for Co-workers?
I was told that Go Fund Me takes a percentage from each donation for themselves--probably administrative fees. I will only give a donation personally to anyone I feel needs it.

Teaching Breast Exam to High Schoolers.
Update---the class went very well. One girl did not want to touch the silicon model but listened to the lecture part. I was prepared for unusual questions but they never came.

Teaching Breast Exam to High Schoolers.
Why not---it is Health related plus this class enables me to get to know the girls better.

Teaching Breast Exam to High Schoolers.
I work for a small private school and the administration was all for it with specific guidelines---email to parents advising them of the class content with option to sit out. I haven't read studies that say self examination has no bearing on cancer deaths although I do personally know of two women who found small lumps on their own which lead to early treatment with high survival rates. This is the first time a nurse has taught health and I wanted to add more pertinent information instead of sticking strictly with the book. I did spend an entire class explaining menstrual cycle --great discussion. We have alot of transfers from public school and although they attended health classes there they were not comfortable asking questions. I am enjoying this class quite a bit and am glad for the opportunity. My daughter, who is in the class, is probably not as happy but she is surviving.

HELP! I have to write policies now??!
Love writing policies---but if you are doing it from scratch it can be intimidating. what I found useful is contacting a nurse friend and ask if they have a policy on what you are writing. If so, ask to borrow a copy and see if it fits what your facility does. Good luck,
