When is it the best time to get into PICU?

Jump in at the first opportunity. Nothing will prepare you for being in a peds critical care environment as much as being there. I worked as a student nurse extern for a year in a PICU before being licensed and had a super smooth transition into the RN role.

I think the print versions might be better if you dont have a smartphone. I'm not sure exactly how the clinicals are, but if you have to quickly double check a dosage or identify a pill up on the unit, you probably wont have your laptop/computer on your person. The nursing students at the hospital I worked at kinda had to stash all that stuff in lockers. The references I have seen are typically small enough to fit in the pockets of a scrub jacket or cargo pocket but I don't know if the ones recommended are pocket size or not.

I contacted the professor, and was also contacted by Elsevier regarding the discrepancies and was told that although the online packages do not match the list, it is only because of a glitch with the website and that the packages contain everything on the printout we received. In addition, the E-book package contains a study guide for the Potter text that is not available online and I was told that the printed version will be mailed instead. The professor said there would be an additional text required for Nurs 220. I am going to get the Potter book in both online and printed version. Any other required texts I'm going to try to find as E-Book rentals Reading a chapter or more off a monitor is intolerable to me and even on an ipad it gets uncomfortable. Conversely, doing assignment and writing papers from the e-book is amazing when you can search for keywords. On Tom's advice, I'm going to skip purchasing the package though because between the free Medscape and Lippencott iphone apps, I can't see carrying two bible-size reference books in my scrub pocket

Now that i finally got my packet, I see what you're talking about. When you view the ebook package online, only the Potter text, study guide and evolve access are offered. Neither the diagnosis, drug, and lab test references, nor the Medical Terminology book are shown. I'm not sure if all those handbooks are included with the "BSN NSG 208 EONLY EVOLVE" offering. The two Mosby reference are available on the apple app store. The drug ref is like $45 and the Med Dictionary is $25. And unfortunately, if you download an app to you iphone, you typically have to rebuy the app for any additional devices (laptop, tablet etc). I can send ---------- and email to clarify this.

I haven't gotten any correspondence regarding books but I used ebooks on my ipad last semester. They were definitely cheaper than renting or buying/sellback plus the ability to find things using a search bar was a godsend for me. Without a tablet, I may not have liked that much. I would usually use the ipad and a computer so i could type papers etc and wasnt switching back and forth between programs. I bought my books through coursesmart, but Im not sure about the availability of this semester's texts.

I think we buy the tests and they are given in class for our grades. From the 2011 Student Nursing Handbook: The Assessment Technologies Institute (AIT) achievement tests areadministered upon completion of most didactic courses throughout the nursing program to assess mastery of specific content... ...Students order and pay for ATI tests each semester online through the ATI website. ATI sends EMU School of Nursing a list of students who have purchased the tests. The ATI study review books an DVD’s will be sent to the School of Nursing to be distributed to the students who have purchased the tests. Fees and deadlines are established by ATI testing service... ...ATI testing is a program requirement in the courses listed above. Facultydetermine how the ATI scoring and test results will be implemented and used in a specific course. The curriculum instruction committee has established the 50th percentile rank or equivalent proficiency as the desired goal for student performance. Students MUST complete the ATI testing to progress in the nursing program. Students are expected to keep a record of test performance and review with their academic advisor... ...The following examinations will be given: Nursing Course ATI Test NURS 208 Art & Science of Nursing I Skills Modules NURS 250 Art & Science of Nursing II Fundamentals NURS 270 Pharmacology Pharmacology NURS 275 Essentials of Professional Nursing I Critical Thinking NURS 304 Childbearing Nursing Maternal-Newborn Nursing Care NURS 306 Childrearing Nursing Pediatric Nursing NUR 350 Psych/Mental Health Nursing Mental Health Nursing NUR 404 Adult Health Nursing II Medical-Surgical Nursing NUR 450 Community Health Nursing Community Health NUR 475 Essentials of Professional Nursing III Leadership in Nursing RN Comprehensive Predictor

i think the whole "keep us in the dark until a couple days before class starts" is done on purpose to get us used to running around last minute like lunatics

Thanks for clarifying. This fall's registration guide has several sections for 220 and 275 listed as DEO (Distance Education Fully Online Lecture). Will our schedule's be set for us based on the group we are assigned to or, conversely, will our group be based on the schedule we choose?

I got the course schedule for each semester from the nursing intent info session. It is also available from last years student handbook which is available for download from the EMU Nursing site. The registration book for Fall 2012 has descriptions of class formats.

Scrubs must be hunter green and can be purchased anytime before orientation from most local uniform shops. There are several on Washtenaw Ave, just off campus. EMU nursing patches must be sewn on the upper left sleeve and can be purchased from the Student Center bookstore. More clues can be found in last years student handbook at: http://www.emich.edu/nursing/pdf/2011_BSN_Student_Handbook.pdf

I have a theory that by the time letters are sent, accepted applicants will have their registration status changed from "Nursing Intent" in anticipation of fall registry which has already begun for rest of EMU's students. Whereas the mail only comes once a day, a registration status can be checked as often as one's neurosis finds necessary.

I applied with a 4.0 gpa with all my classes taken at EMU and 5 years experience as a medical photographer at the DMC. I left my job about half way through this last semester to put everything into gettin accepted (I was taking 19 credits including chem, ant & phys). So now I'm unemployed with a long 6 week wait ahead of me to see if this pays off :)
