  1. considering move to oregon?

Downtown Portland rents/housing = expensive. West and East suburbs are cheaper, though traffic can stink for day shift. There are some avoidable neighborhoods, especially in NE Portland.
  2. How Many Days Do You Work?

I have a similar schedule to Hoozdo I think. 3 12's in a row the first week of the pay period, then 3 12's and an 8 all in a row the second week. Every other weekend is mandatory- which I don't mind because of the differential. 1900- 0730 shift, whic...
  3. Question numbers in the NCLEX?

I remember that mine were numbered, but they were in one of the corners of the screen-not where I'd usually look for a question number.
  4. Do you really have to do all the reading?

For some classes, doing all the reading isn't necessary to make the grade, but doing the suppemental reading seems to make the reviewing easier when the HESI or NCLEX comes around.
  5. One Year In...

Congratulations! It seems that the year has really helped you to discover and build on your abilities to be compassionate and to effectively take charge of situations. :)
  6. Does anyone like med-surg their 1st year?

I actually do like my Surgical/tele position. I used to think that I might go into critical care after a year or so, but now I'm loving the opportunities for patient education that are available on a Med-Surg floor.
  7. "I Come Into Work Sick! Why Can't You?"

At one place where I previously worked as an aide, we had two people who tended to call in regularly after a hectic day, nice weather saturdays, uthings like that. There was quite a bit more grumbling when one of these people called in sick than when...
  8. How much vacation time do you get?

5 weeks for full time at the VA. Problem is, have to schedule around other people's PTO as a newbie, so I doubt I'll be able to use much for awhile.
  9. Very worried about duties :(

Hmm clinical duties . . A short list of what I can think of (sorry, I'm still sleepy) Physical assessments: Assessing patients' health status-skin, circulation, respiratory system, nutritional status, GI status, etc. Assess for changes throughout sh...
  10. CCNC Grad Pics at MAMC

    Congrats!
  11. Finding that first job...

You might contact HR and ask when they prefer their new-grad position applications in by. I think this varies between hospitals and regions. In my area, most wanted them about 3 months ahead of graduation.
  12. You know you work nights when.......

Yikes! I'm just starting nights this week and am already silently cursing my loud neighbor who yells on her cellphone all day outside, and right now I am prepping to move our bed to the spare bedroom in the back of the house. Cramped sleeping quarter...
  13. Does all Grad schools require you to have a 3.0 GPA

Not sure if all grad schools require a 3.0, but I do know several people who originally had less, who then repeated certain classes and were accepted.
  14. Nurses With No Last Names or Titles

I like the anonymity of having only my first name, RN, BSN on my badge.
  15. More free time in school as a GN/RN?

I have more free time just working now, because I worked full time in nursing school; however, I am waaay more tired now on my days off than I was before.
  16. Favorite Mnemonics / Memory Tricks

Here's one for neonatal monitor rhythms VEAL CHOP RHYTHM CAUSE V: Variable decelerations C: Cord Compression E: Early decelerations H: Head compression/movement A: Accelerations ...
  17. Got nightmares?

Interesting thread. I have creepy nightmares about work just about every night. I had one last night that we had to evacuate everyone because of an earthquake. Turns out we actually had one in the area. Talk about blending actual sensations with my w...
  18. Med-Surg nursing... Who likes it? and why?

I've only been working as an RN for a month and a half, but I don't hate Med-Surg. I work on a surgical/telemetry unit and am at the end of my orientation. I get to see an incredible variety of patients and conditions, and I get a little bit of pride...
  19. Mine shrunk drastically lengthwise when I bought 100% cotton from allheart. The medium size still fit widthwise. Good luck!
  20. He learned how to cook! I had a cooked meal just about every day after school, and he's never given me a hard time about it, even now that I am out of school
  21. Nursing School Grading Scale

    Linfield: No A+ A= 93-100 Generally no rounding A-= 90-92.9 B+ = 87 - 89.9 B= 83- 86.9 B- = 80- 82.9 Below 73 is also a fail. I did wish that we had A+ grades to balance out the A- grades.
  22. To those who are having a hard time...

Except for ortho/neuro, these could be my words exactly. On my own in a little over a week . . yikes! Fortunately not completely on my own, because the nurses on my unit are very helpful. To the OP, thanks for the post! It's good to be reminded that ...
  23. Suspension Update

Good luck to you, glad to hear that it is working out :)
  24. Tall scrubs

Dickies are pretty long, but be careful about washing/drying them, they shrink! The longest scrubs I've found so far are the free scrubs provided by the hospital I work for, probably because so many VA nurses/CNA's are men :)
  25. Could prior medical experience HURT me?

My advice would be to carefully study all topics, even if you have had them previously in nursing school- then to answer any and all test questions based on the nursing text information. A few fellow students who had previously worked as medical assi...
