  1. On Call ?

I was trying to tell you how it is. I found it silly when you asked about a 4 hour sleep break and your comment about how you are "one of those people that appreciates 8 hours of sleep" Not being sarcastic, but if you think you are only going to work...
  2. Overwhelmed

Welcome to the OR. Been in the Operating Room for over 10 years and I still learn something new EVERY day. It just takes time. Stick with it. Once you have worked in the OR, you won't want to work anywhere else.
  3. Bone cement while pregnant

It's been my experience that you don't have a pregnant female exposed to the bone cement fumes. Been in the O.R. for over 10 years and it's never questioned, they just get a pass to not do total knees or whatever.
  4. lithotomy before induction?

Sounds problematic. I worked at a rural hospital with less than 25 beds. This place did everything ass-backwards and did not have to comply with JHACO rules since they were so small. It was an awful experience because I didn't agree with virtually an...
  5. New nurse!

Well said... that was a very nice explanation of the O.R. world.
  6. On Call ?

Not to discourage you, but being "on call" is part of the Operating Room world. As one of the previous comments where he worked 32 hours straight, he's got me beat as my personal best is 29 hours straight. I guess it depends on the facility but when...
  7. New Travel Nurse

I hope you have a wonderful experience as a travel nurse. Depending on the hospital, you can either be treated as one of the gang or as an outsider that is the amusement of the staff as they watch you struggle to figure things out. Don't be surprised...
  8. Miserable in my contract

Welcome to the wonderful world of travel nursing. Most of the places I've been sent are as you described. Why do you think hospitals need travelers ? The hospital is understaffed, RN's are overworked and the staff RN's quit. Morale is low and the hos...
  9. Staff nurse wanting travel nurse

It all depends. Depends on where the assignment is, how much the housing stipend is according to the IRS/GAO website for the area you will be working, etc. I've been traveling for the past 3 years and am on 12th contract. I sometimes wonder if it's w...
  10. First travel gig!

Not the smartest thing to go on an International forum and tell us that your are keeping your "tax free" housing stipend and living with family for free. Did you not read the part of the IRS form you filled out when it came to your "tax home base"...
  11. Tax Season!

There really isn't a whole lot of deductions ? Not sure what you are referring to. You can deduct the cost of your nursing license, uniforms, work shoes, etc. And you can deduct the mileage getting to and from your travel assignment. If you want to ...
  12. Floating for 1st assignment?

If you don't want to float to other departments, just have that written into your contract.
  13. Because It's always been done that way orders

I've been sent on my first traveling assignment to a small rural hospital. The people are very friendly, and the hospital is very small. I've been an RN for 7 years and have worked at 2 large hospitals, one of them being a Medical Center with cardiac...
  14. Because It's always been done that way orders

OK... you're saying that I should make a memorandum of what I'm seeing in regards to consenting patients and hand writing an order from the CRNA which should have been put on the Anesthesia order sheet and instead was written on the surgeons order sh...
  15. Because It's always been done that way orders

That's very good advice. I guess I'll have to just cover my own "ass" and do what I know is best. I don't want to raise a stink and just want to fit in and do what I gotta do and head to my next assignment. I already have been in contact with my agen...
