    Kettering College BSN (Dayton)

I started my nextern classes yesterday and the powers that be for the program were in the room talking about how there were over 400 applicants for this fall's nursing program at Kettering. The program can only accommodate 88, so I believe that may be why you got wait listed. I know some people are getting their prerequisites done before they get accepted into their program. The physical school is not very big and they have been expanding to accommodate the growth. Sorry to hear about that, Steinbam. Good luck.

    OB nursing

Don't give up. I got a specialty Dr. office 2 weeks after I graduated my LPN school. Keep your eyes out for OB/GYN or midwifery offices. Also you may be able to qualify for a tech in Mother/Baby in a hospital. While they may not be the kinds of jobs you had in mind, they certainly can help get your foot in the door elsewhere once you pursue your RN. May I also suggest some Doula training. Some facilities have their own doula programs and that could be very valuable experience as well. Good luck!

    Externship in L&D

Is anyone a preceptor for L&D? I start my nexternship next week and I am a little nervous about what my preceptor will expect me to know my first day. I will graduate in December from an associate program, but have only had a few clinical hours on a L&D unit. My biggest fear is checking cervical dilation. Is it hard to gauge? Will that be something I will be taught during my nexternship? Any pointers you could give me including what I might want to review before I go in would be helpful. I keep reading over my OB class notes and in the book, but for some reason I just don't think it can prepare me enough for the hands on that I look so forward to! I am so excited to start this wonderful journey!

Dee, I have a friend now who is going through the BSN program now. She is doing full time, but she isn't working. That is about to change because she just passed her boards and has her second interview for a position. She will be dropping to part time status starting with fall semester, but had she not done that - it would only have taken her a year to be completed with the RN-BSN program. If she goes part time the most it will take her to complete is 5 semesters instead of 3. All core nursing classes are offered during summer. Heroldbe, I haven't graduated yet, but they do have a program for the nurses who are getting ready to graduate called the Nexternship. I just got a position for 8 weeks this summer working in Labor and Delivery (my dream job) and I am so excited. It is a competitive program to get a Nexternship though. They email about jobs while you are attending school as a help to get your foot in the door so to speak. I started as a Sitter in January. They do hire a lot of their graduates as the network has just expanded to include Soin hospital in Beavercreek. It is a pricey school, but it is also one of the best schools anyone can go to. We get excellent training and hands on skills that many other schools don't get to experience.
