  1. What is the highest regular dose of Oxy that you have seen

300 mg TID. I talked the Dr. personally and made her repeat her answer three times.
  2. 8 fired (3 Nurses) for refusing flu shot.

Good riddance. My floor is silly with influenza patients on precautions.
  3. nurse coming to work drunk

This was a Nurse Jackie episode. Any nurse manager who did this in real life is risking jail time.
  4. RN to MD

One of our hospitalists did. I would ask her about it but she scares me.
  5. Did I waste my time/money?

Rehab nursing is a tremendously difficult job. Keep in mind that many nurses work in jobs they don't necessarily want to spend a lot of time in to gain experience and skills to get the job they really want.
  6. essential oils

I don't think they hurt (unless you do something silly like substitute them for abx). They probably work about as well as placebo.
  7. I cannot believe a nurse did this......

    I respectfully disagree.
  8. Gay male nurse concern about male patient care

All patients are different. Some male patients don't want a female patient, others don't want a male. Some don't want a gay nurse, some may want a gay nurse. It is impossible to tell and not under your control. I've had patients assume I was ga...
  9. Pregnant Nurse!

I'm sorry, but it is against the TOS to share medical advice regarding dead cats.
  10. Paid for caring for family

You might be able to get paid for some hours as a PCA, but that isn't going to be anywhere near what you make as a nurse.
  11. Hipaa violation?

This is one story I would not go around repeating. The only thing that could have saved you was to ask the PCA to state the patient's name. Unfortunate incident, but lesson learned.
  12. Pregnant Nurse!

You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a pregnant employee on my floor. Very few keep this a secret or even try. As soon as we get a patient with suspected shingles - and we do pretty often - RNs and aides get an ashen look on their face saying...
  13. Facebook dilemma

Easy one. If an MD orders a transfer to a hospital, you immediately page the DON/ADN and say, "Dr. Feelgood has ordered patient X transferred to the hospital. I am letting you know per your policy." Done. If they give you grief, you can refer them ...
  14. Do Nurses Earn Big Money? You Decide.

The above is the driving factor for Carla's situation. I earned $70k in my first year of nursing. Whether someone else considers that "big money" is not my concern, but that is a good middle class income.
  15. My feet HURT!!!

I feel your pain. The best rx for me was to drink a lot of water (not pop, juice, milk...but water), eat a healthy diet and exercise frequently - especially walking. When I stray away from good habits, my foot pain increases, when I come back to t...
  16. Nurses: How Do You Feel About Your Patients Being Nurses?

Agreed. At first I was a bit intimidated by having RNs or MDs for patients, but then I realized that I am pretty good at my job and I could continue to be no matter who was the patient. I adjust my approach for whoever my patients' are or what backg...
  17. Should I quit nursing?

It gets better. Almost every new nurse on my floor, including me when I started had very similar feelings.
  18. You're fired. And since you aren't in the union anymore, you can't do anything about it. Needless to say, I'll never ever be a nurse manager.
  19. Hurrying death?

I've had one instance where family member, a son and daughter, kept pushing for the staff to purposefully overdose their father. The Palliative Care MD and everyone else who they pushed for this entered their request into notes and explained to the ...
  20. This is an example of some of the worst occupational judgement I have ever seen on allnurses. I know you will, not surprisingly, get support for your actions here, and you won't listen to any advice to the contrary. While your situation is indeed ...
  21. I hate to be Debbie Downer, but is the OP posting on an open internet message board for advice and giving updates on a situation *during* her shift?
  22. Who actually likes nursing??

I really like nursing. I just looked at my last paycheck of the year....now I freaking love nursing!
  23. What does a patient sitter/safety attendant do exactly?

I've did quite a few shifts as a sitter/one-to-one in my CNA days. My duties included: Wrangling drunks. Redirecting confused patients. Tying, re-tying, and re-re-tying restraints. Listening and talking (mostly listening) to people who have recent ma...
  24. needle sticks

The only type of saftey mechanism I've ever thought were worth a snot were the automatic ones - like the kind you see on insulin pens. Just about any "barrel" type saftey devices that you have to manually slide are worthless. If you run into somet...
  25. Overtime pay versus holiday pay

Different companies have different policies. It is up to you to learn the compensation rules before agreeing to shifts. They probably would have been just fine with you staying home and paying someone else the regular holiday pay. There is no inc...
