Don't give up. It took me 7 months to find a job. Keep searching. Make personal contact when possible (ex. show up at Human Resources and ask to talk to nurse recruiter etc.). Mostly just be very persistent!! Good luck!!
  2. Funny things lay-people say...

My favorite is when people self-diagnose themselves by looking online. "Well I was feeling fatigued & nauseous, so I looked it up and found out I probably have: _______."
  3. Dansko work shoes. Your opinion?

Love um. Wear them every shift.
  4. Night Shift 1 hr commute: tips to arrive home alive

I currently have a 1hr commute home after a night shift. I park far away in the parking lot so in the morning I have the fresh air on my face as I walk to my car. Then I refrain from blasting the heat on the way home. It makes me sleepy if I do. And,...
  5. Am I waisting my time with associates degree?

  7. hi everyone!

I did Kaplan. They will return your money or let you re-take the course for free if you don't pass the first time as long as you make sure to complete their entire course content before you sit for the exam. Although I felt like the NCLEX was an enti...
  8. Administering Capsules

My advice is to talk to pharmacy and ask them if you can open the capsule. I went through this very same thing when I first started. Nurses were like, "I was always taught to open these ones." Obviously, I still questioned it because being new you qu...
  9. I think the nurse is maybe just a tad bit envious of all the sitting you are doing while he or she is running around on the floor, so they are taking it out on you by making hurtful comments. Fact of the matter is you are VERY important for the patie...
  10. failed lift test, may have lost job offer..

Wow. That is some INTENSE physical testing. I am a petite young girl too. I guarantee you there is no way I would pass the test either. My physical testing for employment consisted of getting my vaccines and passing my drug test. I would agree with a...
  11. New RN on the verge of a breakdown.... Help!!

I am a new nurse too. My preceptor was very open with me about having very similar feelings when she first began her career. She said after a year she finally stopped getting nauseous before her shifts. I have talked with many others who felt the sam...
  12. Is this professional?

My only possible explanation for this is that she has eyes that are sensitive to the computer screen lighting so when she is charting for long periods of time maybe she actually wears them?? Haha that is my very best guess.
  13. How do you guys feel about shadowing?

I would LOVE to have a high school student shadow me. I entered college 5 years ago and chose nursing as a profession because it was the only thing I could see myself doing out of all the choices that are out there. My experience was based solely on ...
  14. Debate: 8-hour shifts vs. 12-hour shifts

I think it really depends on what you do with your time outside of the hospital. For example, are you able to go straight to bed when you get home or do you have other obligations that you need to meet (cooking dinner for family, helping kids with ho...
  15. Need Opinions on Med Bar Coding Systems

I had clinical at facilities with computers in every room, one with COWs and now where I work we use the hand-held. They are my preference. The COWs are obnoxious. They would be my least favorite. The only thing about the hand helds are that sometime...
  16. Job Search Question?

I would go for it!! That is exactly what I did to get my job as an RN. After applying for 2 months and feeling like I was getting no where I printed out my resume & cover letter, got in my car and drove around. I was intimidated and questioned wh...
  17. Nursing student help

Hang in there and DO NOT feel dumb!! I did not do well on my first chemistry course I took my freshman year, so I took a pass/fail option so the © would not affect my cumulative GPA. The next term I took a higher level of chemistry and got an A in th...
  18. Give them at least a month to get back to you. If it was an online application, follow up with an e-mail or phone call stating you are really interested in the position. But seriously, at least a month. Hang in there!!
  19. Unemployed Old Grads?

  22. Let's think positive today!!

  23. how old is to old for medsurge

I am a new grad. My current preceptor started as a new grad on our busy med-surg floor at age 46. She is excellent. Many of the nurses I work with are older than she and they are excellent. I treasure the veteran nurses on my floor!
  24. The thing about 12 hour shifts...vent

Ugh...I understand!! My parents call during the day wondering why I'm not awake. I woke up at 6:45pm and called them and they are like wow I can't believe you slept so late. I'm like well I just had 3 days on, the last two nights I got 6hrs of sleep ...
