  1. Which stethecope is best?

I have a Litmann Classic something or other, I have no idea what it is - I just know it was pricey and it's amazing. I accidentally picked up a cheap-o at work that belonged to another RN but looked similar to mine - and WOW, the difference between t...
  2. Do you stalk anyone here?

Man, I'm a little jealous that I wasn't around to fully participate in this thread. I don't really stalk anyone, although I do find myself liking the same people's posts usually. :)
  3. The ONE thing that will make your nursing life easier

And an ativan diffuser for each room with overbearing and anxious parents.
  4. Feeding oral meds to children

Which is all good until they reply: "Oh, we can't get him to take any meds, ever." I have had parents opt to stay in patient for 10 days of IV ABX rather than to take the kids home with oral PO. Basic. Life. Skill.
  5. I've learned there really isn't anything more awesome than being PRN and taking two full weeks off at Christmastime. BOOYAH!
  6. When Should You Call Off Sick?

I work in pediatrics. I get every URI that comes down the pipe. RSV will take down a grown woman! LOL!!!! If I called out every time I got the sniffles I would never work. I mask, take some sudafed, and power thru.
  7. Am I Crazy to Leave $$$$ Job?

Hi! :) At the end of the day, we are not the ones to answer your question. You are. :) We can only give you our perspectives. I went into nursing as an adult. When my youngest was in preschool, I began to hack my way through my prerequisites. Then n...
  8. Eyes and teeth. Teeth especially. We once had a teenager who had been kicked in the face by a horse.... all her teeth were gone in the front... but she had braces, so.... they just dangled there.... God,I'm feeling sick talking about it....
  9. Seven Hells: Vent

2 years of med/surg experience with adults will do little to prepare you for the world of NICU, honestly - my hospital routinely hires new grads that are passionate with the specialty because it is so so so specific. So I'm surprised by that comment,...
  10. Rules for Per Diems

We have a required policy as well. I have to work at least 24 hours a schedule (which is about 24 hours every six weeks) and one major winter holiday.
  11. Pay Difference Between Full Time and PRN?

Where I work, PRN and full time make the same base pay - well, we have different pay raises based on our end of year evaluations. But I am not one of the lucky PRN people who make a ton more. :)
  12. Feeding oral meds to children

I have gotten pretty good at the squirt down the throat method. There is NOTHING worse than a screaming kid over medicine. That's a basic life skill. Irritates me to no end, especially the parents who let the kids win!
  13. Finger oxygen saturation monitor?

Or a gift certificate to a scrub store. :)
  14. Finger oxygen saturation monitor?

There may be an issue with her using one that she has purchased in the workplace.
  15. Male foley came out after irrigation?

It sounds like the balloon popped. Yowch.
  16. The Flip Side - When you're the patient/family

Definitely escalate up the chain of command if you have concerns. You are your family's biggest advocate for sure. But like the previous poster said, I have never been allowed to change a new surgical dressing. Reinforce it? Yes. Call if it's necessa...
  17. CVC dressing change

Yep, like other posters - we use clean gloves to remove the dirty dressing, then sterile to clean and reapply the new one. Everyone in the room is masked, including the patient.
  18. My preceptor is everything they taught us NOT to be...

I remember when I finally hit the floor fresh out of nursing school, sure that I was going to be able to save the world. The real world is not the NCLEX world in which you have been living for the past few years. It is what it is. Sure, your precepto...
  19. Made a child with cancer cry.

The first thing you need to do is stop seeing these children as their illnesses. I know it's hard when it is what we are there to take care of, but they are children first, and patients second. You know? You did nothing wrong. I do not take care of c...
  20. Pulling meds early?

I do not work in PACU, so maybe this doesn't even apply to me -- but I do not pull meds early unless I am going to give them early. When caring for multiple patients, you are just increasing your chances for a med error by having a million meds boun...
  21. What's your side job?

I work in my crazy busy Children's hospital... but occasionally will help out a neighboring hospital in the system on their small pediatric unit when they need help.
  22. I don't like pediatric patients, am I normal?

I really really hated my OB rotation. I found myself thinking "Oh get over it, you aren't the only person to have done this. I've had three of these little turds cut out of me!" LOL - it didn't give way to empathetic nursing care at all.
  23. I don't like pediatric patients, am I normal?

I would rather stab my eyes out with forks than to take care of adults. :) I know so many of my friends who are adult nurse feel the same way about kids. That is the thing about pediatric patients - they really should never be on a floor with adults...
  24. 12 hr shift makeup routine

Bare Minerals really works for me. :)
  25. Is it possible to get the holidays off?

My PRN contract states I have to work one major winter holiday. And I worked Thanksgiving. So. :)
