What kind of scrubs do you wear in LTC?
I am buying some new scrubs and I am torn on what to wear. I own both prints and solids, but I have recently been reading more about prints being unprofessional. In my opinon, in LTC prints are a conversation piece. I will have some residents who never say anything and then out of no where will say I used to have a cat (because I have cats on my shirt) and then I can have a conversation with them about there cat and you can see how happy it made them. So I am lean towards prints but would like some other peoples opinions. Thanks! =)

Calling briefs "diapers"....*vent*
NEVER CALL THEM DIAPERS!!! I learned that in my NA class and it has always stuck with me. So often when some describes being a CNA they say "it's just like taking care of bigger babies"! No it is not, most of the residents know what is going on and would really not like to hear that they wear diapers. It's degrading to them as human beings.

Contact Isolation: Do YOU always gown up?
I work in an LTC facility where we usually know why the person is in isolation and how serious it is. It never seems to matter how serious the infection is, people still refuse to gown up. We had a patient who was on contact isolation, and the CNA I was with said just to wear gloves because we were only moving the pt. I can see were she would feel gloves were appropriate for the situation, but if you really think about it they were not. The pt grabs the bed rail you are leaning on and they lay in the sheets that are touching your clothes therefore if anything was on the bed rails or sheets it is now on your clothes for you to walk around with and touch are pts, and go home to your family with it on your clothes. Maybe I am to cautious, but if there on isolation I will always gown up.

camo scrubs.. opinion
I have a camo top with pink trim on it and all my pts love it, I wear it with plain pants though. I think that patterned pants look stupid so I wouldn't do that. I think a camo top for a male would look good though.

Good nursing shoes for low arches (a.k.a. "flat feet")
I have the same problem, I have worn nothing but DC shoes since my freshmen year in high school (about 6 years) and I still wear them. I never had much of an arch to begin with so that's why I have always worn them and they are the most comfortable thing to me. They are a very roomy shoe and very cushy. I normal wear wide to, but with these shoes you don't need wide because they are made larger.

What are the smallest brand scrubs?
Grey's Anatomy, Baby Phat, Izzy, and Urbane scrubs all run smaller then normal.
-
I wanna look fly on the job...
Baby Phat scrubs are really cute and are made for smaller frame girls, there is also urbane scrubs or izzy scrubs that are made for small women. I do know some nurses that wear the cotton top with the scrub pants, I think it is more of a dress code issue, that you would have to address with your facility.

Four 10's or Five 8's? Which would you do?
I would definitely go with the 4-10s. Instead of being 4 extra hours like you work now, it's only 2 extra hours and you have 3 days of instead of the 2 that you would have with 5-8s.

No HS diploma or GED, but is a CNA?
I can see both sides, but what I can say is what I learned in high school has in no way helped me with being a CNA. So much of being a CNA is common sense and not about book smarts. If being a cna was about book smarts then you would not be able to become a cna in 3 weeks it would take 2-4 yrs. It is unfair to say that someone is not qualified to do the job of a CNA if they do not have a diploma. I do have a hs diploma, but I know some people who don't that succeed as CNAs just fine. You are not automatically stupid or incompetent for not have graduated high school. My father never graduated high school, and yet he is now in upper management.

No HS diploma or GED, but is a CNA?
In both Illinois and Iowa (I live on the border, so they both affect me) you must have a h.s. diploma or ged to take the classes at any of the local schools, so that would lead me to believe it is a state requirement.

Pregnant and Want to get my CNA
When I took my cna class, we had a girl who was also 5 months pregnant in our class. She completed the class but could not do the clinicals. The school worked with her though, and she just has to take a week of clinicals once she had her baby.

NOC shift CNAs
I always love how people say night shift does nothing! I take care of 30 residents, of that only 2 can walk themselves to the bathroom. I have 4 bed checks were I must check all of those residents, I have paperwork (which is all done on a computer system, so it takes twice as long as paperwork should) and I have for 5-7 in the morning to get up. Of that 1 is a highly combative man who is a hoyer lift, 2 more are hoyers that are total care, 2 are easy stands that are extensive assist, 2 are extensive assist that transfer with a gait belt, and 1 of my residents will actually walk to the bathroom and assist with getting herself ready! And guess what...Day shift still complains! I'm 18 yrs. old and have been a cna for a month, and this has really made me seriously never want to be a cna again.

CNA hourly pay rate?
I have had several different cna jobs in the last year my pay was the following: 8.79 9.25 8.25!!!(MINIMUM WAGE IS 8.25!) and my current is 10.04 I only have about 3 months total of experience because I have been in some not so pleasent LTC facilities, but the one I am at now is a really good facility and is willing to pay better then most facilities around here. (I live in IL)

What have you failed the CNA skills exam for?
I passed mine 100% the first time around! I was really nervous to, but just pretend that the evaluator is not there and slow down and take your time. in iowa, you have 45 minutes to do all of your skills. I thought I took along time and ended up have 30 minutes left. my skills were oral care, rom, dressing, pulse and respirations, and bed to chair transfer. things that I know they mark down for that are easy mess ups are like not raising the bed, not explaining the procedure to the patient, not providing privacy (pull the curtains, cover the patient up etc.), not lowering the bed when your done, not putting up bed rails if the pt is suppose to have them, not placing the call light with them, not doing hand hygiene... the only major offense I can remember right now is if you have to transfer the pt and you incorrectly use the gait belt or you put it on to lose. if you just relax and think through each step you will do fine! good luck!

Everyone wears scrubs!
Yep, around here a lot of them wear dark blue scrub tops, and I just seen that now Walgreens' uniform in the pharmacy is scrubs.

Everyone wears scrubs!
i was just wondering if anyone else found it odd that everyone wears scrubs in medical facilities. i personally do not understand why the dietary staff or the housekeeper needs to wear scrubs. i think it confuses patients because they associate the a person in scrubs as a care provider. maybe i wrong, but i feel like in a way i earned the right to be in scrubs and be a health care provider when i went to school. i even see the wal-mart workers (cashiers, door greeters, etc.) wear navy blue scrub tops now:)! i don't know maybe i'm wrong, what do you think?
