  1. (IN)Appropriate Dress

Forgot to add that I would strongly recommend you discuss this with your professors, they might be able to help you understand how problematic your attitude in the first post is.
  2. (IN)Appropriate Dress

You use the frustration emoji because you lack any type of experiential or contextual understanding of why it is inappropriate for a male nurse to make comments about tight pants worn by women NPs, and to re-trench your position when most posters her...
  3. Is being an NP REALLY like i'm reading?

you ou have described my reality. I have realized the dream of knowing patients, seeing families, providing education. In order to do that, I see 24-36 patients per day and routinely work an hour to 90 minutes past the end of my shift. It's exhaust...
  4. (IN)Appropriate Dress

so neither an NP nor a female professional. Think I've heard enough!
  5. Patient education frustration

I choose my battles. I won't prescribe antibiotics qMonth, and we agree not to talk about how often they go get random penicillin shots in Tijuana. And yes you get a reputation. Just make sure it's for other (good) things.
  6. Patient education frustration

I could write a book on the california immigrant hispanic population and education and diabetes. What I have learned so far: - Culturally many are taught to be extremely subservient to doctors/providers. They won't ask questions because they want t...
  7. Patient education frustration

I work with the exact same population, and have learned a few things the hard way. Some things to think about: - how are you communicating? do you speak spanish or with a translator? do you understand what your translator says? are you sure? an un...
  8. NHSC program 2015 comparing the 2 programs and tax break

NELRP is definitely taxed. They take out about 30% before they give it to you. In my case, the offer on paper looked like NELRP was going to give me substantially more money than NHSC. After taxes it is the exact same repayment amount. i was concer...
  9. Patient Comments

    ... NEXT!
  10. Career (Prep) Advice

There should be plenty of NP opportunities in ID, possibly more inpatient than outpatient but it probably depends on where you live. All of those clinical sites would be great; if possible I would split time between two or three. If you can only do...
  11. NFLP loan repayment--has anyone had trouble after graduation?

Many nursing schools will not hire DNPs as tenured faculty. If you have your heart set on teaching, and you definitely need loan repayment to pay for the degree, I would strongly recommend doing PhD instead.
  12. California Scope of Practice

In the outpatient setting, not at all. Inpatient really depends on the culture of the hospital, the specific service, and how much experience they have utilizing NPs. I have seen extreme opposites in SoCal for inpatient services, from micro-managed...
  13. Scrubs Make Me Crazy (long rant)

I'm 24. I'm 5'5" - 44-35-44. No shrinking violet, but not a bruiser, either. I live in skinny jeans and fitted tops and I like looking remotely "female" when I step out of the house. Normally I'm pretty laid back. But scrub shopping makes me ...
  14. Time

Primary care here ... I take a lot of "behavioral" and chronic complex care new patients. As soon as I realize a patient has 25 complaints on their first visit ... I stop my h&p and make them tell me their list. Document it into the chart. And...
  15. My obamacare experience

I work in a state that elected to provide medicaid expansion as part of the ACA. We were closed yesterday for New Year's, so today was when "obamacare" implementation really took effect for my clinic. Instead of seeing My schedule for the next 3 we...
  16. California NP licensing and job search

Until recently I always had the impression that CA BON was staffed by 2 people. The same man and woman always answered the phones. Response times certainly suggested that 2 people were doing all the work for the entire state .... Now no one answers...
  17. Chronic care at retail clinics?

Really interesting to hear this perspective, thanks for sharing. I always wondered about ability to refer out from this setting. It sounds like you have an official referral network? What about labs and referrals for uninsured patients?
  18. National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment 2014

Yes I have wondered about that! I even re-checked my HPSA score and it still says 13. I got funded late in the cycle, maybe I was really lucky and there weren't many 13's accepted. Who knows. They most definitely funded me ! I'm full time.
  19. Question on the NP Furnishing License in Calif

a few thoughts .... Something is very wrong with CA BON staffing right now (more so than usual). So it might be a realllly long time before you hear anything official. Depending on how recently you applied they are saying up to 90 day wait for resp...
  20. National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment 2014

I was funded last year with a site score of 13. I think they give more funding each year to NP's which is why I made the cut.
  21. Anyone go back to paper charts after EMR?

Yes - it is painful to go backwards but you get used to it. My biggest frustration has been med lists (you better hope the most recept script got put in the chart, and that it's legible) and vaccine records (hopeless). I wouldn't accept or decline ...
  22. Accelerated BSN, how much did it cost you

Federal loan amounts are determined by your cost of attendance, which is calculated by your school. My school added everything up (they include cost of living estimate, tuition, health insurance) and basically told the federal government how much I ...
  23. What is your take home pay as Nurse Practitioner?

Wish granted! What type NP are you? Adult Where (state)(rural/urban) do you practice? Urban, California Are you independent or in a group? FQHC/ primary care with integrated behavioral health program How many years experience? 2 as NP, 0 RN What is y...
  24. Thoughts on designer resumes?

    Pretty but not professional.
  25. NELRP 2013 - Who else applied?

I was notified of acceptance last Thursday, 9/4. Hang in there.
