  2. Things you wish you knew as a new RN

Still a new grad but I would say I am so so glad I had a wonderful preceptor who would always remind me that I am only one person, I can only do so much. Now whenever I feel overwhelmed I just stop for a second and tell myself "I am only one person" ...
  3. My best orientation mistakes

Just a few months off orientation myself and I still feel pretty stupid at times. Just the other day I forgot the clamp the pt's NG suction after I gave him meds I also learned the hard way that once you spike a bag, you cant unspike it...vancomycin...
  4. Preceptorship ideas? I have it narrowed down

Do you have any other experience such as a CNA job or externship? I was lucky enough to have an externship in med-surg/oncology so I went with something I'd enjoy and did labor and delivery for my preceptorship. However, if you dont have that outside...
  5. Lazy nurse or what

Have I seen a lazy nurse or two? of course. But for the most part no, we're not lying when we say nursing is hard. There are days when I really dont get a chance to sit down, take a bite to eat, or even pee until 5pm. For some its worse than others, ...

In Arizona we called feeding tubes duotubes, but here in salt lake they call them dophoff tubes (not sure if that's spelled right). What do you guys call feeding tubes?
  9. Patients that made you go "How are you even alive?!"

That reminded me, I had a pt with head/neck cancer, he was 6' 2" and weighed only 97 pounds. The poor man, it was heart breaking.
  10. Patients that made you go "How are you even alive?!"

I watched a cardiac cath of a guy whose heart rate was about 18 and he was awake and talking, I couldn't believe it. I also had a pt with an a1c
  11. Slapped across the face by male patient

I cannot believe some people are implying that an alert and oriented patient should not be held responsible because there was a language barrier and he could have been scared and just reacting. What a load of BS! The language barrier goes both ways, ...
  12. Top 10 tips for nursing school

    - Your classmates are not your competition anymore, they are your allies. I couldnt have gotten through nursing school without some of the friends I made there. - Your free time will dramatically decrease but still find something outside of nursing s...
  13. I Love My Job!

Yay! I'm so glad you made this thread because I'm a new grad too, 4 months into my job, and I LOVE it! I've been wanting to share just how honestly blessed and I happy I am but with all the negative posts and new grads not finding a job I was afraid ...
  14. Help! My piggyback won't run!

I dont back prime but I have had the same issue of coming back later to none of the piggyback having run in. I dont have any explanation for it but what I do is bend the primary tubing above the pump and wrap tape around it, this usually makes the pu...
  15. Question for Current Nurses!

I think you're very smart to get a realistic picture of what you're facing. I went straight through nursing school after high school because I knew I wanted to be a nurse at a young age. I thought I was doing the right thing, going to college then I'...
  16. New Grad interview, 900 miles away, expensive...HELP

This^ I applied and ended up moving out of state for a job. I was willing to pay to interview out of state but only if I knew I had a fighting chance at it and wasnt one of hundreds for a few spots. I would usually ask if they did a few rounds of int...
  17. What's your favorite/least favorite part of your job?

My favorite part about my job is that we have the privilege of getting to know people personally. We are trusted with intimate details of their lives and take care of them during sometimes very scary and difficult times in their lives. For example to...

  24. How much pain medicine is too much?

Slurred speech and unsteady gait are both symptoms of chiari malformation, and to me it sounds like the pt is experiencing side effects of that, not from pain meds. If her vitals are all stable (especially respirations) then her pain management is im...
  25. Input needed!

I'm a newer grad myself so I dont have lots of experience to base my opinion on but for what its worth I personally think the jail position might be better. You'd get more experience thats useful to other areas, and while it may be a tougher populati...
