  1. RN-to-Paramedic Bridge

I know there is an older thread (circa 2003-2005) on this topic, but I'm looking for more current information as some of the programs mentioned therein no longer exist (i.e. Creighton). So, does anyone know of any currently active RN-to-Paramedic pro...
  2. Nurses eating and drinking at the nurses station

When my employer starts letting me take the lunch break that I'm legally entitled to, then I'll stop eating at the nurses station.
  3. Worked hard all night

I just love it when people (patients, visitors, other nurses) give nurses a hard time for "sitting at the computer." I'd much rather be taking care of patients than creating mountains of documentation that no one will ever look at.
  4. Interpinary discipline

That's not really helpful. To OP, just go ahead and give your new employer the info they're requesting. It sounds like you did everything required of you by the state in which this occurred and was reported. More likely than not they just want to c...
  5. Can any of you guys help a guy out with 10 questions?

    E-mailed you a response.
  6. Ca. Paramedic to RN?

It's not as uncommon as you might think. I know there are a few other people posting on these boards who went from fire/EMS to nursing besides me, and I work in a trauma ICU with another former FF. What region of California are you in? Any specific...
  7. Nurses aren't maids!

I understand from your second post that when this happened maybe you didn't trust yourself to address the issue directly. That was probably a good idea if you were in danger of losing your temper, but there's a happy medium between losing it and you...
  8. Do you feel society is in denial about the nursing field?

There is a nursing shortage, but things are tight right now. That means fewer people retiring or moving jobs, fewer new jobs being created, and employers asking employees to do more with less. That means when staff resign or go out on maternity lea...
  9. OP, as a nursing student you're hopefully taught to maintain a healthy level of skepticism and know where your statistics are coming from. The 130,000 number you quote isn't from a peer reviewed research article as many posters are assuming. It's fr...
  10. do RN residency programs really make a difference?

Being a Magnet hospital, given my experience, doesn't necessarily mean anything. They can be just as bad or worse than non-Magnet hospitals.
  11. Alameda County

Most civil service jobs (i.e. police, fire, county nursing) rank potential hires into "bands" or "ranks". This is probably what they meant. Example, when I was still applying to fire departments years ago they would rank from Band V (Veteran's who s...
  12. How many times do you really skip lunches and breaks?

I work night shift, 7pm to 7:30am, 3 days a week. In theory I am required by law to take a 30 minute lunch break, and my employer also allows for as many as two 15-minute breaks. The reality is that I have never taken a 30 minute lunch break, much l...
  13. sleep breaks?

i'd be happy to actually take the 30 minute lunch break that my employer docks my pay for. as it is i work 12.5 hours for 12 hours of pay.
  14. I know this is rather mediocre.....

Some friends and I tried to create a drinking game based on the inaccuracies in House. It was short lived, mostly because liver transplants are hard to come by.
  15. Are you an organ donor?

I'm not an organ donor because nothing I've heard has been able to sell me on the idea.
  16. White male in nursing, any scholarship options I need help BAD!!

You are seriously misinformed. Kevin, you can try the American Assembly for Men in Nursing. They do a scholarship for male students annually, but it's small.
  17. Gravity NS boluses for pediatric patients?

Classic. I say stuff like this to nursing students all the time.
  18. Has anyone heard of needing a liver transplant d/t trauma?

Not a HIPAA violation. If the patient is making a claim against your friend's auto insurance to cover his medical costs then he has to voluntarily disclose that information about his injuries and treatment to justify the claim.
  19. 7 months of RN experience

Why don't you stay where you are until you have a year's experience, then come join him?
  20. nursing agencies san francisco (not traveling)

Do a quick search on threads regarding the availability of new grad positions in the bay area and you'll see that you're barking up the wrong tree.
  21. Do you stop infusion "for a walk?"

We're a no smoking facility, so they're S.O.L. for a smoke break unless they want to sign AMA.
  22. "Medic" to replace the term "nurse"

    Priceless
  23. "Medic" to replace the term "nurse"

One could make a similar statement about female firefighters who campaigned to have "fireman" changed to "firefighter." Nurse is no less gender specific.
  24. Exploitation of New Grads in California

Could you be more specific what "California programs" you mean so we are all clear what we're talking about? There's a "T2P" or Transition to Practice Program in the SF Bay Area, which a lot of people have been talking about, that sounds a lot like w...
  25. Feedback on Bay Area hospitals?

Where in the east bay are you relocating to? As the previous poster mentioned, it's a very large area. We might be able to give you better answers if we know the general area.
