  1. WHat's your end goal with the FNP? IF it's family medicine/primary care, peds would probably make the most sense. However, if you want to do ED as an FNP, the docs might be right.
  2. Should I do this?

SHadow in the hospital setting. For more than a couple hours. Even better, work as a CNA; even per diem, and see what you think. Particularly if you want to work hospital.
  3. It's for me

Oh.My.God. Who ARE these people?!????!??? I know who they are, but really, these are the people/things that make me angry and make me want to leave direct care/nursing in general.
  4. Alternative to ER

I think UC is the most similar to the ED in terms of structure/flow; however, you are not going to see (most of the time) very sick patients or cardiac issues. That might be best done on a med surge/ tele floor (not sure if LPNs are hired into those ...
  5. Confused on what to do

I would agree with the others. Those are horrible ratios; if you are that unhappy I would think about leaving to get experience on another unit If after 6mo+ somewhere else, you feel competent enough to try traveling, go for it Or, if you are really...
  6. Asking to shadow?

Thanks Amzy!! I ended up asking the manager, and she said yes !
  7. I'm looking for advice/ideas about a job I am deciding whether or not to take. I haven't had a formal offer, but am expecting one later this wk. The job is a Nurse manager/team leader position for a new case management program working to integrate pr...
  8. Specialty for introvert?

Education, as in college professor, might be hard if you don't like public speaking. Case management, clinic nursing, UR/insurance co stuff, PACU, research.
  9. Unlicensed personnel administering medications

In our clinics, Medical assistants used to be able to give all injections (except insulin, we dont keep that in stock) including rocephin, depo, testo, b12 and all vaccines. they have recently changed the rules so that MAs can now only give vaccines...
  10. Transitioning from Psych to ICU/Med Surg

OP: any luck? A friend of mine who I worked with in the psych unit got a per diem job on geri med psych WIth that experience, she was able to transfer within our hospital group to med surg Now she works for one of the best hospitals in the country on...
  11. Specialty for introvert?

I am an introvert; have done psych, case management, and now clinic floating. In psych, I think a lot depends on the patient population and the size of the unit. WOrking in a 6 bed crisis unit wasnt too emotionally taxing; 26 bed locked unit w lots o...
  12. RNs being employed in primary care clinic

In my area more and more clinics seem to be hiring RNs. I think the shift here is moving away from having medical assistants do everything. In our clinics (I'm a float for a large clinic/hospital afilliated group), RNs do case management, follow up/d...
  13. Switching out of Psych

My friend got some experience per diem in geri psych (there is a lot of turnover there). From there, she transfered internally from psych to med surg. Now she works @ one of the best hospitals in the country on a vascular floor. She started out at a ...
  14. Getting back into hospital nursing

Birkie Girl: just curious, what kind of work were you doing the 12 years away from the bedside? What made you come back? And how much acute care experience did you have under your belt when you left?
  15. Favorite scrubs??

Greys, scrubology (work n' gear's brand- similar in feel to grey's but cheaper), cherokee tops (Theire bottoms dont fit me right). recently just tried healing hands purple label pants and they are my favorite. I also like med couture's tops; cool col...
  16. Getting back into hospital nursing

They would rather hire someone who has been in the hospital before, knows the reality, and still wants to come back vs. a new grad or someone who hasn't worked in the setting and might not be a good fit GOod luck!
  17. New Grad RN: Neuro ICU vs BMT residency

    2nd southpaw ; )
  18. I am one of those nurses I guess some would consider lucky- I have been a nurse for 10 years and have never worked in traditional "bedside" nursing. I have worked psych in an acute care hospital, but since the vast majority of our patients are walkie...
  19. I have about 8 years of experience in psych nursing and 2 years of primary care (with some urgent care and rheumatology sprinkled in) I am trying to decide if I should move out of direct patient care I have always wanted to work in the ED but didn't ...
  20. Career move away from patient care?

    Thanks for the input, CoolKids!
  21. Making a move

Where do your interests lie? Psych? health coaching? Also, what do you prefer: hands on skills@ resi facility vs. phone @ 1st job? The hour commute may be a bit long if you are not super excited about that job, but otherwise the $$ and commute at the...
  22. Med error, 1st "write-up"

So I just had 2 med errors in the past 6 months and was written up for the 1st time in my career. I have been a nurse for 10 years and have been at my current job for 2 years; I have been w/ the same hospital/group for 3 years an the same overall org...
  23. Do ASN/ADN nurses still get hired in the hospital?

absolutely. some hospitals even hire lpns! if you're a new grad and want to work in a big city or competitive area, it will be harder to get hired w an asn vs bsn.
  24. New Grad deciding between two positions.

If you have a specific interest in cardiac, and/or working in a more cardiac-focused setting as an NP, take that into account.
  25. Torn between office RN and hospital

Do you have any long term career goals? It's OK if you don't yet/aren't sure, but if you do- keep those in mind. It really depends on your personality and what you are looking for in a job. I've worked n the hospital (psych, not med surg) and curren...
