Overweight Nurse?
OP...I know exactly how you feel. I was 260 lbs at my highest weight. I could lose the weight but I could never manage to keep it off. I would get winded walking up a flight of steps. I decided to take control of my weight instead of letting it control me. After much consideration, I decided to have gastric bypass surg. I'm 6 mos out and down 64 lbs. I've not only changed how much I eat but what I eat. I now exercise 5 days a week. Do not give up on your dream of being a nurse!!! You may find that you desire to become a nurse will help you in your victory with being overweight. Good luck!!!!

How to Study?
I try to make my flashcards as soon as possible after class. I then put my all my flashcards in a coupon organizer. I carry this organizer with me everywhere. I study my cards every chance I get (while waiting in line to pick my kids up from school, waiting at the doctor's office, etc.) I also read through my chapters and highlight the important stuff. My professor gives us study guides. I try to do those from memorization and then go back and check my answers. I think it is a lot easier to memorize things if you do understand the concepts of what you are learning. Also, you may want to take a online quiz and find out what type of learner you are. I am a read/write learner so I've organized my study habits around this. Once you find out what type of learner you are, you can google search study habits for your type of learning style. Hope this helps. Good luck!

What is the DEAL with these textbooks?
Same here. I had to buy all my books this semester new because of the access codes and cd's. For two classes, my books were $550. I did not want to chance it with Amazon. Last semester, I had a seller on Amazon send me the wrong book so I still had to go to the book store to purchase the book for class. The seller would never return any of my emails. I lost $150 to that seller.

I passed Chemistry with a "C", should I retake?
Will the chemistry count on your GPA? The chemistry that is required at my school is just basic high school chemistry or an equivalent. It does not count against your GPA. If it does count against your GPA and your school requires you to have a high GPA to get into the nursing program, you may want to consider retaking it. If it doesn't count against you GPA, I would not retake. Hope this helps.

Vance-Granville Community College
Hi and welcome to NC (well not just yet..lol). I am currently taking my pre-req's at VGCC. VGCC only starts nursing classes in the fall every year. There is no wait list. Instead, they give you points for various things..example your GPA from high school, teas test score, A&P 1 grade, and if you live in the four counties (Granville, Vance, Warren, or Franklin Co.) you earn extra points. Whoever has the highest points gets in. I think they take around 40 every fall. There are alot of deadlines to be met..example for fall 2010 you have to apply by Jan. and have your teas test taking by March. High school biology and chemistry is a must to be able to apply with a passing grade of a "C" or better. I hope this has helped you. Let me know if you have any further questions. Good luck!

Should I take Chemistry BEFORE I take A & P I ???
I am taking A&P 1 and Chemistry this fall together. My adviser said that since I did well with Basic Biology. I should be fine. These will be the only two classes I take this fall. I think you should take whatever you want to take first. If you study hard, you should be fine.

Can you complete all pre reqs in 2 semesters?
It is very possible. Just put your mind to it and you can achieve it. I just started working on my pre req's over the summer semester. I will finish taking all my pre req's by summer 2010 for the ADN program at my school. My work is Summer 09-Eng 111 and Bio 094---Fall 09-A&P 1 and Basic Chemistry---Spring 10-Eng 112, A&P 2, 1st Psych, and Humanities----Summer 10-Microbiology and 2nd psych class. I will be able to roll into the ADN program Fall 2010 if I do well on the Teas test. So it is very doable. Good luck and let your dreams come true.

studying for a&p before the semester even started
I just pick up A&P for Dummies last night. I plan to start reading it tonight. I get my textbooks on Monday and will start studying the textbooks next week. I figure it cannot hurt to start early. I need an A in this class. Good luck to everyone.

Organization and study tips?
brillohead: I love this tip. I will be downloading some classical music to my mp3 player. I use flashcards for everything. As soon as I come home from class, I hand write my flashcards. Then I quiz myself with the cards.

How many hours did you study A&P and what grade did you get?
Back2thebooks...WOW 101% that's impressive. You deserved it. I'm planning on taking A&P I in the fall. My adviser told me that it was a minimal of 15 hours a week homework/study time to pull off an C. Good luck.

Question on GPA
This is for the RN program.

Question on GPA
I've been out of hs for 15 years. My GPA in hs was 2.97, not the best but I did alot of goofing off. The school I am applying to uses a points allocation based on TEAS test score, A&P 1 grade, county of residencey, and GPA HS/Ged. I've got the points for county of residence. I'm banking on my scores for teas test which I will test for in June and my AP class which I take in the fall. Do you guys think that my hs GPA will hurt my chances of getting in?

Do you think this is possible?
I am in a similar situation. I will be taking Eng. and Bio. this summer. But I plan on taking A&P, Chem, and Nutrition in the fall. This is just so I can apply for the fall 2010. My adviser said I should be fine taking A&P and Chem together. Good luck.
