  1. I loved Mental Health. I think I was the only one in my class who actually enjoyed it.
  2. Moms w/ little ones, who watches the kids?

Depending on what state your located in, some states have a paid babysitting program for families who are under an income cap. Check with your local Social Services Department at the Courthouse.
  3. Jobs still are available for nurses

I agree there are still jobs out there. I graduate in May with my RN. Since the hospital in my area is on a hiring freeze, I applied at a LTC as a LPN. I was hired for weekends as a LPN with the agreement that I would have a full-time RN position onc...
  4. Breaking into Mental Health

Hi, I'm going to be a new grad in May. I have a Criminal Justice Degree, Surgical Tech. and LPN degree. I will graduate in May with my RN. I did my clinical rotation for Mental Health this week and I fell in love with it. The nurses on the Mental...
  5. Becoming an OR Nurse!

I'm finishing my RN this year and I also have a surgical tech. degree. You really don't need Med-Surg experience to be an OR nurse, but most hospitals do transfers within before a job is posted. Since OR jobs are ususally M-F and oncall, it's a sau...
  6. At what point is the failure rate unacceptable?

The school I attend did graduate a class of 7 out of 30 several years ago. They have made changes and last year it was about 20 out of 40 that graduated. My school indicated that if we can't pass the tests and the classes in the program, we won't p...
  7. Too old to become an LPN?

I'm 37 and will be 38 when I graduate with my RN. We have several students who are in their 50's and to tell you the truth they are the best students in the class. Age is just a number. I believe that older students tend to take school more seriou...
  8. Is it harder than you thought?

I graduate with my RN in May, 2010. The first tests are always the worst. Once you know what an instructor is looking for, you have an idea of what to study. You guys are really lucky because at our school you have to have an 80 on tests to pass a...
  9. Getting off on the wrong foot

Don't worry about it. I would just let your instructor know what is going on. She may have some advice to help you get through the year. I will say that instructors do look at whose attending class and if your not at class and then don't do well on...
  10. Any Encouragement or Advice?

I don't think there is ever a right time. I get stressed when I'm out of my comfort zone. I sold my business to attend school. There are days I wonder why I'm doing this. I hate not knowing what is in my future. I always had a constant pay check...
  11. Advice- Single Mom ASN student

I would check with your school. Our school will help single parents with daycare, student employment at the school around your school hours and also social services may be able to help with food, electric, heat and daycare. Good luck.
  12. Didnt do well on my First Test =(

I'm in my last year of nursing school and I believe most of our class flunked the first Fundamentals test. If your book has a CD use it because their are alot of NCLEX questions on it. When I studied for that course I concentrated on Table, Charts ...
  13. Cliques in Nursing School

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I won't worry about it. I tell myself I'm at school to learn and not make friends. We do have cliques at my school and a few who think they know it all, but honestly would you really want a friend who belitt...
  14. Nursing shortage

I live in Wisconsin and there is a hiring freeze at the hospital so the only jobs open are in LTC. Our school is actually going to take less students next year due to the fact that there are no jobs.
  15. Nursing school stress

Hang in there. I'm in third semester and it doesn't get any better. Don't be too hard on yourself, you can do it. Schedule some time off, even if it's for a few hours. You can't absorb material if you totally exhausted.
  16. I'm really upset due to the fact I took my first test in Complex Health Alterations today and I studied for 10 hours over several days and tried to apply what I learned to different situations and I only got a 70 on the test. We didn't have very man...
  17. What am I going to do!!!!!

Buy a LPN NCLEX, it reviews the sections your working on in Fundamentals and then the sample questions are similiar to those on tests. Fundamentals is not memorizing, you have to apply the material. So think each questions out and look for key work...
  18. Which comes first?

At our school it is held on the same day. Graduation in the morning and then you return later for the pinning.
  19. I'm in my last year of nursing school and I would say the hardest part is getting the reading done and also finding time to spend with my family. All I do is study, study study!!
  20. Nasty LPNS AND RNS TO STUDENTS

Sometimes they forget they were students at one time. Some are nasty because they are on power trips. I use to be a surgical tech and was reminded everyday I was at the bottom compared to the doctor and the nurses. We are all a team and the patien...
  21. Abusive and Cruel Clinical Instructors: Why??

Well said. I must say I have not experienced this at my school. I got the toughest clinical instructor according to everyone else and I learned so much. She expected nothing but the best, but she did let you know if you were doing well.
  22. Told LTC a waste of my time

I will be graduating soon with my RN degree. I have a Surgical Tech. degree so my husband and others are insisting I go into Surgical Nursing. To tell you the truth, I found Surgical Nursing boring and the only way I would enjoy it is if I was also...
  23. Told LTC a waste of my time

Thanks so much for your responses. I need to follow my heart and do what I enjoy because life is too short.
  24. Very depressed & q for older students

You won't be the oldest student out there. I'm 37 and will graduate when I'm 38 this year. We have several students in their 50's and they receive awesome grades. To tell you the truth I didn't have the discipline to do this in my 20's. I have tw...
  25. Advice needed

After the first few tests you will determine what instructors go off the power points and which on depend on the book. I only do the reading for 2 classes and the other one I don't because the instructor actually told us not to do the reading unless...
