What are your study techniques?
I use what's called an exposure chart. Sounds weird, but serves a purpose! For each chapter on your exam you should have AT LEAST 5 exposures to that material to make a C. I just made a chart in Excel with all the topics for the test and as I covered the material I put a check mark next to the subject. I have made all A's in my Fundamentals class doing this. Hope that helps :)

working while doing full time nursing classes
:) I have 3 children. And it's HARD! But I have a fantastic husband who, now that I am in the program, does nearly ALL of the housework and that includes cooking dinner and laundry. Without a strong support system at home Im not sure how I could do it. My breaks at work during the night are spent studying. That's the only way I can fit it all in. It's working so far

How did you cover your tuition costs?
I work f/t, got a workforce improvement grant, a couple of scholarships and student loans. I agree with the poster above....borrow conservatively! And pay interest while in school!

working while doing full time nursing classes
Well, here is my take on the subject. If it is something that you have to do in order to pay the bills, then you will figure out how to get it all done. I do the same thing. I work full time on 3rd shift and go to class from 8-2:30 after working all night and getting off at 6:30 in the morning. It SUCKS, but it's the only way that I can go back to school and not starve to death. Hold your head up and tough it out- it will be worth it when you look back :) Have you looked into an extern job or whether or not your state allows you to test to get your LPN?? Those jobs might be willing to work with a school schedule. Just a thought. HTH.

Study/Test tips
Personally, I try to read a paragraph or two and then summarize that in my own words. If Im able to, then I understood what I read.

Nursing dx question
OK- Im brand new at this too.But here is my shot at this. Imbalanced Nutrition: less than body requirements r/t loss of weight with adequate food intake. Therapeutic NI for this would be monitoring food intake and recording % eaten..???? Hope this helps. Like I said I am 5 weeks into my very first semester of the ADN program so we are still learning this stuff too. Good Luck Just realized that I have nothing saying AMB....?? SEE? I stink at this! LOL!

How do you stay sexy in nursing school
'nuff said!

For Fun--Kudos 2 Me...The "toot your own horn" thread
Ok- I'll bite. We took our first CPA yesterday and I made a 93%. That is BARELY an A on our grading scale, but still yet it is an A. AND it's the ONLY A in the CLASS!!!! I realize I have alot of work ahead of me, but that was sure a confidence booster!

What inspired you to become a nurse?
My mother was very sick my whole childhood. She had to have emergency stomach surgery at Loma Linda when I was about 8 years old. I stayed with my mom in her room; made a pallet in the floor next to her bed. The nurses there would take me to the cafeteria to eat and one even took me to the gift shop and bought me a stencil book. They not only took excellent care of my mother, but they took care of me as well. I knew that I wanted to impact someone's life like they impacted mine.

Assessing your cohort
LOL! I'm the brown noser who has the homework done WAAY before it's due. I'm really not a brown-noser, just extremely worried that something will happen and I could've already had the material finished. I too already see the ones that come in literally 1 minute before theory starts- and I'm the one who is there 30 minutes early reading my lecture material for the day. :thankya: It's just the way that I am!

It's actually NOT so bad!
WOW!!! You don't know how bad I needed to read that. I work full time 40+ hrs a week on 3rd shift and go to NS during the day. I have 3 kids and am busy too. I have heard NOTHING but negative when it comes to my situation, and to be frank I'm tired of people asking me how I'm going to handle it! You are an inspiration! THANKS!!

Is Nursing School less mysterious than pre-req's?
That's not necessarily true either. AP and Nursing are in two TOTALLY different formats. It would help to have an A in those pre-reqs but it is possible to make it through with a B and even a C in those pre-reqs. I have a friend who is now in Nursing 4 who had a C in AP 1 and has had nothing less than a B on all his tests in NS.

Free nursing books through iBooks
Wow- Im going to search for them now! Thanks!

Just wondering about you guys....(I have questions)
I can honestly say that each and every one of us had classes together before NS so it wasn't like meeting someone new. We all get along well together, and purposely switch lab partners so that we aren't playing favorites. I'm not really stressed out.....I actually enjoy the pressure. For me at least it helps to push me to perform better.......

SO how was your first day of nursing school?
My first day was FANTASTIC! We spent an hour covering our calendar and syllabus took a 10 minute break and toured our skills lab. We really got the chance to get to know one another and what to expect from our instructor. The only thing that really concerned me was that EACH of the 6 exams has to have a score of 77 or higher in order to advance. Im sure that I'll be fine, but once I realized that it wasn't a cumulative 77% I panicked a little bit. But that's just all the more motivation to study harder! Oh and our grading scale freaked me out too: A 100-93 B 92-84 C 83-77 Whew! Guess I'd better be ready to accept grades other than all A's!

What date do you start Nursing school?
Today is the day!! I don't have to be awake for another hour, but I'm too stinking excited to sleep!
-
What does your uniform look like?
Well I won't have that problem!
-
What does your uniform look like?
Wow- there are some interesting color combos going on out there! I guess ours aren't too bad. We have zip tops and unisex pants both in sailor blue ( from Dove apparel) and white lab coats. All tops have to have the school patch on the left sleeve 3" from the shoulder seam. Athletic shoes are okay at our school as long as there is no mesh on the top.

What do your study spaces look like?
I love your study space! I need to find a corner and carve out some space for me

Why do you want to be a nurse?
You absolutely can! Take it ONE day at a time; don't look at all the things you have to get done or overcome for the entire semester or even the next week. Just take a deep breath, worry about today and enjoy the ride on the way to becoming a nurse! :hgu:

What do your study spaces look like?
There is absolutely no spot in my house that I could designate as "mine" for studying...but I do love to spread everything out on the bed and study there. I will wear earplugs and stretch out and study my little heart out :rckn:

They bumped up our minimum passing grade point average...
Ours is 77%

No longer a pre-nursing student!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! I start Monday as well- we will have to share our day!

Why do you want to be a nurse?
@ohsosocial- I think your answer is honest and real and PERFECT for your application! I recently had to answer that very same question for a scholarship application- and for me it was extremely easy to answer. Good luck to you in your pursuits of becoming a nurse
