need advice: lpn or rn
I would absolutely go for your RN. My understanding is, LPN's work in LTC. Everyone in my classes were non traditional students with families so don't let that discourage you from attending the program. They are hard programs wherever you go, but they have to be in order for you to pass the boards. Good luck with whatever you choose.

NH market for new nurses
I too am a new grad and I have easily applied to over 75 positions to hospitals in NH and Maine and received not ONE reply back. I called Wentworth Douglas, Goodall, York, Exeter, and SMMC checking up on my applications only to be told "they DO NOT hire new grad's". Portsmouth has a so-called "new grad" program, yet, when I called to follow up one my applications their reply was; "we get 1000's" of applications for the selected positions" and to continue to apply ELSEWHERE!!!! WOW!! So, needless to say the market continues to suck for everyone especially new grads. GOOD LUCK!!! It's brutal out there.

So how long did you study before taking the NCLEX?
I took the NCLEX 3 weeks after my final. Studied the last 1.5 weeks. I passed the first time with 75Q's. Good luck.

So, has hiring picked up for everyone else??
Sadly, I have done the exact same thing as you and unfortunately am in the same boat. Funny that I too am a fellow New Englander! Hopefully we will catch something soon.
