  1. so right now i'm a RN on an adult critical care unit, have been there a year. i enjoy the work very much but i work night shift 3 12s and i'm trying to figure out what my next move is. when i was in nursing school we did rotations at Austin State Ho...
  2. thinking about trying child/adolescent psych...

oddly enough, at ASH that just might work..seeing as how when i call all i get is "come over looking nice and we'll talk to you."
  3. Need advice from night shift veterans!

yeah, i really enjoy nights. i get more time to spend with my patients and there are fewer people messin' with 'em so when i leave they can often sleep for a few hours... the extra shift diff sure helps when you're trying to pay for college. i lov...
  4. Pregnancy and Critical Care Nursing

congrats! i'm a critical care RN. wear support hose (i wear those every single shift), STAY HYDRATED, take potty breaks, snack if you can, get lots of sleep. i think ALL of those are important. if you have a good relationship with your management...
  5. Need advice from night shift veterans!

i've worked night shift since june & while both my kids are in school, i can tell you what works for us and hopefully when enough of us chime in you can find something that works for you! i have never been a morning person so i completely change...
  6. I've been bullied all my life, and it continues...

i am a firm believer that if we want this sort of behavior to stop in our profession, we have to lead the way. what is considered "normal" or acceptable behavior ie: nurses screaming at each other, verbal abuse, etc is simply grounds for immediate...
  7. More than 7 working hrs a day = bad for your heart...

i believe it, i love my unit but a 12hr day wears you out! then you go home (you don't get out until 30min after you get off then 30 more min to drive home), eat, fall into bed, get 6hrs then you are back, by the end of my 3 days i want to puke just...
  8. I've been bullied all my life, and it continues...

1- first of all, HUGS to you! 2- nurses for some idiotic reason are super threatened by new blood. i am currently in a preceptorship & while everyone is very nice to me,very few cliques on my unit, basically as a new RN it's impossible to win....
  9. which offer would you take?

do not take home care!!! you have very little experience so you are really putting your license out there IMHO. i wouldn't do home care w/o at least 5-10 years experience...i know agencies that won't hire anyone with less than 7...it's just too muc...
  10. Nursing market becoming oversaturated?

people keep saying that but i don't believe it, i personally know at least 3 experienced nurses in the austin area that have been told: "you have great experience, we'd love to hire you but we aren't hiring RNs right now." when i was in school I was...
  11. Considering Austin

PS: i definitely agree with you about no competition to help with pay...2 hospital systems controlling everything is annoying maybe if there were more they could compete more..of course too many nurses doesnt help.
  12. Considering Austin

i dunno where you live in Houston but if it's like any other city, including Austin, it all depends on which part of the city you live in. Downtown is expensive if you avoid the slums. the 'Burbs are cheaper but further out, and some 'Burbs are st...
  13. Nursing market becoming oversaturated?

PS: over 60% of the RN residents at Seton are ADNs & in my job interviews they were thrilled with my degree & didnt care about the bachelors....my educator said many surveys show that BSNs have the lowest "stay" rates on units..
  14. Nursing market becoming oversaturated?

the nursing market for new grads in Austin is SUPER saturated. i was lucky & landed a job but there were over 1000 applications for 70-something new graduate Versant positions at Seton hospitals. the programs at ACC & UT just keep expanding...
  15. Leaving Neuro ICU - wishing it had gone better

you did the right thing. unfortunately i saw male nurses treated like this all the time in my clinicals...they always seem to get the same patients that are heavy to lift, difficult to manage, etc. then the managers wonder why the guys never stay. ...
  16. So who do nurses marry or have as civil partners???

DH & i hate valentines too. stupid hallmark holiday & i hate stuffed animals!! we make it a point to stay home away from the restaurants and watch an action flick..
  17. A bit confused about Nursing School

if you want to work in a nursing home or other LTC facility then be an LVN. otherwise go for the RN. many of the hospitals in my area that have LVNs are phasing them out, the LVNs that are on staff are being "encouraged" to get their RNs... the "Re...
  18. So who do nurses marry or have as civil partners???

  19. Info on Austin State Hospital

i did my psych clinicals at ASH. from what little i remember, they run 8hr shifts: 0700-1500, 1500-2200, 2200-0700. i dunno if you will have to start out on evenings or nights but considering all the state penny-pinching you are probably more likel...
  20. January NCLEX Study Group!

flash cards annoy me, i tend to lose them so i made an outline writing on blank printer paper, -olol = beta blockers equals lowers heart rate = check apical pulse before admin and so on. i've actually been very very lucky, i landed a job in the IMC ...
  21. January NCLEX Study Group!

this is probably too nosy, but have a cool job lined up yet?
  22. January NCLEX Study Group!

the SATAs are so nerve-wracking! i always overthink those bigtime. i had some unfamiliar meds on the exam but i was able to figure many of them out looking at the suffixes. be sure to take your time, i always found myself rushing thru but my kapla...
  23. January NCLEX Study Group!

i can't remember exactly, the last 2 are pretty brutal, i think around 60-65% or so. i feel that Kaplan prepared me very well, you are gonna be fine! dont get burned out now, if you feel your brain turning off or glossing over when you start some q...

i did kaplan and it was awesome! i did 150 questions a day after my class was over (my class ended 4 wks prior to testing) and the trainers, i did question trainer 6 the sunday before my exam, then question trainer 7 the monday before my exam, took ...

in my nursing school clinicals i worked with several BSNs and they make the same pay at Seton as the ADNs.
