I agree. You need time to sleep after that night shift on Sunday. I know if I don't rest after a night shift I have difficulty concentrating and staying awake and then that exhaustion will carry over for days making me really unproductive.
I know, right! The other day we were short-staffed and I had 5 patients during the day ... the educator comes and asks if I am available to learn how to use the PCA pumps?! Why does it have to be on my time?? I was off for 2-3 weeks (due to cuts) and...
ASk your supervisor if there are other options available and explain your situation to her. Maybe he/she will be more understanding and help you out ... hopefully.
The MD usually gives an order like, infuse 1 unit of PRBC over 3 hrs. Depending on if the patient has had a transfusion before, their age and general health I will start the infusion at a rate slowly and if there is no reaction then increase it furth...
I have 1.5 years of medical/surgical experience with adults. I am also taking critical care courses in the hopes of applying for ICU in the near future. However, there was a new job posting for a pediatric position, one which I have always wanted. I ...
this is an interesting topic and one i have never really though of. i haven't had the opportunity to work with a transgendered nurse, but i am pretty open minded and i imagine i would be fine with it. i would treat them with the same respect as i sho...

I think you should have a talk with this co-worker and clear the air. I know I wouldn't want to work in that kind of environment. Continue doing your best and doing things "by the book" and you will be fine. They can't fire you. At least you have sup...
To each his own so long as they provide quality patient care. Job opportunity and salary are two of many reasons as to why I became a nurse. I will leave the profession the day my heart isn't in it anymore.
I heard a rumor that our Medicine floor was closing down and the nurses were all displaced or laid-off I presume. I work part-time on an Oncology unit and I usually get 5-6 shifts per pay period and am constantly called in on my days off. I just got ...
Honestly, you should do whats best for you. People are just giving you advice based on their own experience/biases etc. When I wanted to transfer to a different unit and hospital, a lot of people gave me different advice and I listened to one person ...
Detroit Trauma :i know what you mean. its in my nature to take a breather and think things over before i respond and by then i think its so petty that's its not even worth my time so i let it slide. maybe they will realize how stupid they acted. i al...
I think having a year or two of med/surg experience under your belt as a new grad is a great way to go. Thats what I am doing before I specialize. I see med/surg as a building block. You develop a lot of skills/knowledge. I worked on a surgical oncol...

First off, how immature and unprofessional of your co-worker. If you need to say something, speak to that person in private instead of degrading them in public. You should have walked away and allowed them to cool down and for you to collect your tho...
Although I really hate it at times, mostly due to the frustrations re: management and how under appreciated nurses can be ... I find nursing to be a very rewarding job. I make a difference in peoples lives no matter how small or big. I meet people I ...

Of course you are not the only introverted person in nursing! I'm an introvert by nature and I know of a other nurses who are introverted and they are good at what they do. I admire them. Although personally, I wish I could be a blend of the two beca...
Of course you have the right. Say something along the lines like "do you mind stepping out for a minute so I can ...". Most families are receptive from my experience. It allows them time to go grab lunch or a coffee. Sometimes its a relief for them a...
