  1. Advice regarding hiring in CA

When you say "My boyfriend is stationed in Lemoore, Ca....." I assume he is in the navy at NAS Lemoore. There is no acute care hospital in Lemoore, but there is Adventist Medical Center in Hanford 10-12 miles away and Kaweah Delta District Hospital i...
  2. Paging Doctor Nurse

Actually most MDs have not received the training or research to be awarded the title Doctor in the original usage. An argument can be made that they usurped an academic honor. Doctor comes from the Latin for teacher.
  3. Full Moon Syndrome: Fact or Fiction

Nah, it's bad luck to be superstitious.
  4. Clinicals - What Not to Do?

One thing to do: Approach clinical rotations as you would an extended job interview, be attentive and situationally aware. The person walking down the hall may be the DON or hiring manager, your school uniform will make you very visible and your deme...
  5. PVT: Question of Character?

Okay, I fully expect to be slammed for this. What do all these posts about gaming the system to get early results say about the character of some of the new grads/nurse candidates? One of the prime requisites of being a nurse is good judgement. Boast...
  6. PVT: Question of Character?

Ok, I'm the OP and let me clarify my post with an example: you place a wager with a bookie, it's a proposition bet with two possible out comes. The bookie does not have any affect on the outcome only participants do. Now there are several bets that c...
  7. PVT: Question of Character?

Hey, I'm encouraged by the support of my original post. I was hesitant to raise this issue thinking I would get flamed and accused that my user name is an accurate depiction of me and my character. I did not use the PVT, and even if I did it would b...
  8. Feeling Lost: Prestigious Nursing School Debt

Seekinghappy, If you search online for largest nonprofit hospitals and hospital systems you may find a significant number of them are church affiliated. Some of these facilities have a well entrenched network that favors alumni/alumnae of schools tha...
  9. Feeling Lost: Prestigious Nursing School Debt

I think you may have meant Regionally Accredited. Nursing is an interesting case, it aspires to be fully accepted as a profession but because of its relatively low barrier for entry it does not embrace academic achievement, and consequently value th...
  10. How much do nurses make?

Funny thing about Unions, although it currently is a (buyer's) employer's market; high tide floats all boats. Academic facilities, state facilities (prisons and jails), and Kaiser are strongly represented by unions. There are others but I am simplify...
  11. How much do nurses make?

But not entirely true, California is a large state that extends beyond the Bay Area and the Palm Tree belt. Some places have a reasonable cost of living and good wages.
  12. Working in a Trauma Center but nervous about Traumas, advice appreciated

I agree that traumas should be basic, primary assessment, ABC, DEF on down the line. Initial response to a trauma will attract a lot of help. One thing about trauma response it requires delineation of responsibilities and a single leader. I have obse...
  13. The Nursing Licensing Cartel

Well folks, it's called the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Consider if as the state of California could issue a license for someone in New Hampshire and that state had no say in the matter; or New Hampshire could discipline a nurse in Kans...
  14. Illegal immigrant nurses can now be licensed in California

I tried to lighten this up by a poor joke about the difference between unlawful and illeagle (sic) is a sick bird, it fell flat. So know listen to a story. There once was a province of a sovereign nation that had abundant land and vas resources. T...
  15. Taking 20 credit hours?

This may sound like a dumb question but do you speak any Romance languages? Knowledge of languages such as Spanish really does make anatomy more intuitive, the Latin roots of many anatomical terms helps immensely and can simplify some of your workloa...

  17. Is it just me, or is this rude, sexist, and condescending?

Holy Crap! I'm getting sucked into this vortex again. It's very simple behave as a gentleman and you'll be treated as a gentleman, remember you will at some point need your colleagues assistance with something don't antagonize them unnecessarily
  18. Is it just me, or is this rude, sexist, and condescending?

Besides I don't want them to blame me!
  19. Is it just me, or is this rude, sexist, and condescending?

Okay, I'm a guy, I can't help it I was born this way. But I was raised to always be respectful and good mannered; it is not unusual to be the only male staff member on my unit and I take it as a sign of respect to my colleagues to place the seat down...

]Okay I lost my awesome response, PALS, I bet what scares you is leading the MEGA CODE. Here is what is going to happen, you will be chosen to lead a team in a vignette. You will have one shock scenario that transitions to a cardiac scenario that if ...

  23. No calculators allowed as an RN?

Calculators absolutely are used by RNs in the clinical setting, but they are only useful in completing the arithmetic, you have to know the mathematics to be able to provide safe patient care. Remember in school the actual numbers are only place hold...
  24. Is anything at your work that puzzles you

I have never heard of acetaminophen referred to paracetamol in this country.
  25. Is anything at your work that puzzles you

One that gets me: in our charting there is a choice for paracetamol overdose, but no choice for acetaminophen or Tylenol overdose. Please understand this is in the USA and our vendor for the program is based in the USA.
