  1. Hope for new grads

Thanks to the original poster, and everyone who tagged on above. As a new grad, it's nice to here the good (and not just the bad). Cheers
  2. Fired recently - REALLY need advice!!!

Hi Summerlovin', I'm a new grad RN who is a second-career nurse, and I've seen this type of behavior before in the corporate world. It's called BoWS (Black Widow Syndrome), and commonly stems from a supervisor feeling insecure or threatened by a youn...
  3. New Hire and Hep B vaccine

Like ghillbert, I didn't seroconvert after the first course. But did after the second. I've always be been told that Hep is a much greater likelihood in the medical field than other ailments, so better safe than sorry. JMTC
  4. Just finished my ABSN program and it was like high school on steroids. Different clicks, lots of gossiping and backstabbing. Tried to stay above, but they got me in the end. Glad it's over with. I think it's all the tension and stress of NS. Sometime...
  5. Need guidance on ohlone college nursing program

I applied to Ohlone's program last year, and of approximately 800 apps, I ended up as #187 on the waiting list. You may want to consider applying to other programs, as your odds of getting into Ohlone are slim.
  6. K pack??

He might've wrote for a "K-pad". It's used in placed of a heating pad, except it uses heated air, and can't burn the patient. I've seen them ordered for patients with muscle pain.
  7. RN New Grad- can't find a job!

I'm graduating from Samuel Merritt's ABSN program next week. I started sending out resumes and putting in apps about two months ago, to try and land a spot in any of the local new grad programs starting early next year. So far, all I've been told as ...
  8. RN New Grad- can't find a job!

I interviewed at John Muir WC two weeks ago, and was told that they had just under 400 apps for 3 new grad positions. I didn't get in there, but I'm still hoping for a Christmas miracle (a job). 8 million residents in the greater SF Bay Area, but whe...
  9. Washington Hospital Fremont pay?

I live near this hospital, and know people that work there, and if you'll pardon the cliche, "I wouldn't be caught dead there." From the street it looks practically abandoned, inside it looks like a really old military hospital. It's staffed with tra...
  10. Samuel Merritt Prereqs

I took Barstow's pharm class a couple of years ago, and for $16/unit I got to take the course while living in the Bay Area, from a cc in Socal, and it was taught by an Army medic in Atlanta. God Bless the internet:)
  11. Samuel Merritt Prereqs

I'm at SMC, and I took patho through Yuba City College ($16/unit), and a couple of classmates took it through SBCC. It won't give you good patho skills overnight, but it'll give you enough of a background to get in the game.
  12. I'm one of six men in a class of 33, and I can say it's been an interesting experience. As a middle-aged white male, I've spent a lifetime being a part of "the majority", and taking for granted that the majority opinion usually coincides with my own....
  13. Help!!! Need Online Classes

If you are in California, you can check the California Virtual Campus website at http://www.cvc.edu/students/courses. It's a central listing of online community college courses. I took Developmental Psych (as an ABSN pre-req) through a JC in Socal ca...
  14. Nightingale Nursing school in san leandro CA

I did my CNA training at the Nightingale office in Pleasant Hill. It's the same owner, same company, same instructors. They really talked up the San Leandro LVN program, but when I looked into it, I found out that it's classified as a "trade school....
  15. Hi, I'm in an SMC ABSN student. And while I can't say it's all been roses, I can say that I have had some good experiences in the program. I've had some wonderful and dedicated nursing instructors, and some great clinical experiences. It has been ext...
  16. OU online prerequisites

I was accepted into the OU program last year, but choose to go to SMC instead. I used a Human Dev course from College of the Canyons to satisfy the requirement. And I think Barstow College also had that class online. The only pre-req might have been ...
  17. which Fx heals faster, humerus or nasel?

All things considered equal, I would say the humerus. Cartilagenous tissue (like nasal) is avascular. And therefore receives all of it's nutrients via diffusion. This is much slower than skeletal tissue.
  18. Samuel Merritt ABSN: January 2009

He got the call abut 2-3 days before classes started. And he was commuting from RENO. Don't be alarmed if things don't happen quickly. SMC is quite under-resourced in admin staff, and sometimes they can't process apps and push paper quickly. But they...
  19. Samuel Merritt ABSN: January 2009

Hey, I'm in the '08 Sac absn class, and I would definitely be careful of the apartments on West El Camino, on the east side of I-5. I'm at Natomas Ridge (aka Tamaron Ranch, aka Discovery Cove), and we've had three shootings this year. They change the...
  20. Samuel Merritt ABSN: January 2009

hurleygrly137, at #3 on the waitlist I'm almost positive you'll get in. I'm currently in the Sac ABSN program, and our class had someone who was #7 on last years waitlist, who got in.
  21. These are all nursing diagnoses associated with COPD (excerpted from F.A. Davis' Nursing Care Plans, 7ed). impaired Gas Exchange may be related to altered O2 delivery (obstruction of airways by secretions/bronchospasm, air trapping) and alveoli des...
  22. Samuel Merritt ABSN worth it or not?

The Kaiser Loan Forgiveness Program ended in 2007. It was replaced with a number of $25,000 Kaiser Scholarships given to nursing students in exchange for 2 years of employment. Kaiser has vastly cut back its recruiting incentives, and at a luncheon m...
  23. Rate My Professor

Rate My Prof can be valuable resource. But the professor can dispute any posting and have it removed. So don't worry to much about disgruntled students getting back at former instructors. Where I've found the site to be useful is in the overall pictu...
  24. Phlebotomy Training

Hi, can anyone help me find an IV Therapy certification in northern California? My program isn't teaching IV skills, and I really want to learn how to do this.
  25. Need Help with RN options

Hi, if you did well in your LVN program then I don't thi nk you'l have much to worry about in applying to an LVN-ADN bridge program. Like you I looked into going the private school LVN, followed by LVN-ADN Bridge route to an RN. And my understanding ...
