  1. I'm so sorry....your spouse just died.

When I was 17, my very best friend in the whole world died in a hospital. Her parents were called and told she was not doing well and they needed to come in right away. When they got there, she was dead. They beat themselves up for years afterward......
  2. Sedation..Your thoughts?

I would have left her there. She was comfortable and oxygenating.
  3. Ativan IVP given undiluted into central line.

I usually dilute it with NSS
  4. Whats the most blood products you've given in a shift?

    148 units of prbcs in a 12 hr shift....MVA pt.....she didn't make it
  5. Who knows? I've never seen it on any acceptable abbreviations list.
  6. I was a waitress at a pizzaria before going to nursing school.......so a little! HAHA
  7. Hmmm its a toss up. New Years eve got a call from the ICU director that Mrs. So an So died after I left that day and it looked like meningealcocal meningitis and I had to get back to the hospital ASAP for a dose of cipro. Then there was the time ther...
  8. No. I work in ICU and assume families are there to visit, not care for the patient. The patient and his care is completely my responsibility. Visitors delivering care under my license does not work for me and I make that very clear from the start. I'...
  9. What do ICU nurses do?

What does an ICU nurse do? EVERYTHING! You keep your patient alive if that's the plan, you give them a dignified death if that's the way it goes, you take care of their families and you take care of each other and at the end of the day you walk out h...
  10. staffing

The same thing happened on our tele floor. Our manager used the incident to get administration to approve a monitor tech position on all 3 shifts. Tele nurse patient ratios are currently 5:1 which we are trying to get changed to 4:1 due to the increa...
  11. Need Advice

If you're not sure.......ask first. Be confident enough in yourself to know that asking questions is not a sign of weakness. Also notice, seasoned nurses ask for opinions too. No one is an island. ICU nursing is not a solo sport. I designed my report...
  12. taking work home

I'll talk to my husband about some things I don't work through on the drive home. He listens, rarely comments, it helps. Mostly, I try to work things out while I drive home, transitioning from nurse back to wife and mother.
  13. AACN membership

You signed up for a year....that's what you get. It'll cancel on its own if you don't renew.
  14. All it takes to be an ICU nurse?

Yep, that's mostly true. While it's great to understand why things are happening, it's not a realistic goal for any new grad. Know it's better to ask first then fix something later. Know who you can trust to guide you as you continue to learn. Know i...
  15. My hat's off to CC Nurses!!!

Thanks mam......all in a days work!......But it is nice to hear once in a while.
  16. Sedation..Your thoughts?

She looks good to me....I'd have done the same as you!
  17. Nurse-Patient Ratios on East Coast

I worked in a level 1 trauma center in PA and the norm was 2 vented-swan'd patients to 1 nurse. In the hospital I work at now it's 2-3 patients to 1 nurse in the ICU, tele is 5 to one on days and 6-1 on nites.....not so good.
  18. Contact precation and Isolation question

The Infectious disease nurse at our facility just informed us she is really no longer even trying to get patients previously flagged as positive for MRSA worked up to see if they are still positive. There is a ridiculous itinerary that must be met to...
  19. Bedside Report dillema

I'd continue to ask this nurse questions about the information I think I need to get the picture of the patient's course. If she responds "I don't know but I think they were fine"....I'd say "well you best find out for sure, I'll wait while you look ...
  20. Family attitudes and understanding have rapidly fallen since patients became "customers". The lack of respect to those in the medical field has declined and will continue to do so as long as this continues. Family as well as patient behaviors have hi...
  21. zeroing pressure lines

I learned many many moons ago that lines (A-line, CVP, PA) are zero'd at the phlebostatic arch.....however, the hospital policy where I work at now states A-lines are zero'd at the insertion site, so that's what I do
  22. Nurses pulled to other units

It's unfortunately becoming a more common problem these days.....nursing according to the accountants.....not patient acuity. You have to ask yourself....am I providing the type of care I'd want if my patient was my mom? If not, you have your answer....
  23. considering change from cvsicu to neuro icu

I loved my time in neuro ICU! Go for it.
  24. This may be a silly question, but I need advice...

Did you try printing? Sometimes that better than longhand....just a thought
  25. Just a vent

Here's a little story for you....I was new to this particular institution's ICU, yet there long enough to begin to know some of the anesthesiologists by face. I came on shift one morning when this guy came completely flipping out when he found a pati...
