When a patient states "something isnt right..."

Studies have been made to analyze the hours immediately preceding an arrest and see if there are any signs and symptoms that could be predictive of impending arrest within a timeframe in which reversal of the deterioration could be reversed. They are...

When will people learn NOT to say the "Q" word...

Yep-because it's a consistently repeating pattern in my experience (that and the full moon, too). I'm not talking about when it IS quiet to start and then makes up for lost time-just normally hectic nights that go completely out of control about 4 t...

When will people learn NOT to say the "Q" word...

Kewl. I just alway figured once it was out of anyone's mouth we were doomed.

When will people learn NOT to say the "Q" word...

Oh, yeah-I even feel a little nervous THINKING that word...my husband is so accustomed to this that his parting comment when I leave for work is "Hope it's the "Q" word"!

    V-Tach or NOT?

yep- been there, seen that (med-surg here), also tach d/t scratching an itch, or laughing. (i owe a couple of my gray hairs to just that phenomenon). you still have to check the patient instead of the monitor but w. a pt who's not really high risk an...

Being Naked Where I Work: A Nurse With Cancer

    1) No one can make you" take off" your dignity. 2)Tomorrow is the Avon Walk weekend for Boston- I will keep you in my thoughts. All the best-we know you are a fighter! Chaya

    Happy Nurses Week!

It probably ought to be shown inside a little "dream bubble" above an exhausted nurse whose alarm is about to go off at 5:15 AM...
  8. Def a gray area. In school we had a journal of the patients we cared for which we turned in weekly to the instructor. Pts were identified only by initials, age and gender, ie: E.F., 79 year old female. Not too difficult to ID if condition, labs and a...

    Madame, your ignorance is astounding

Exactly. While you clean them you are assessing mental status, pain, skin, movement and GI function. Grab a set of vitals, check pulses and listen to heart and lungs and you've got a pretty thorough picture of their physical/ mental health in less th...

    Fired for a medication error

Exactly.A few years back hospitals began to take a less punative approach to med errors and to encourage voluntary disclosure in order to discover where and how in the process errors occur and educate staff to prevent them from recurring. Let's face ...

What motivates you to go to work every day?

Interesting. I wouldn't even let myself THINK that. (Picture the Peanuts character with the little cloud over his head that follws him wherever he goes...). Likewise, I wouldn't even let anyone mentionthat "Q" word-if the word "quiet" passed anyone's...

    Phasing out alarms?!?

Mixed feelings on this one. To my thinking, safety concerns beats dignity every time except in very extenuating circumstances. I do realize that frequently the audible alarm means "pt on floor". However, in a significant number of them you do find yo...

What motivates you to go to work every day?

yeah, that; it's hard or impossible to turn off feeling like a nurse , on an almost cellular level. this being said; -my motivation is, i need the health insurance. (i do like to eat and sleep under a roof with heat, too but un-subsidized health ins...
  14. Nursing is whatever the bean-counters decide will suit their purpose-du-jour. Depending on supply and demand the scope of practice seems to be re-defined every few years.

    Shared Goverance

I think you hit the nail on the head.

    Visitor Etiquette

I would have been reluctant to, say, sign out a narcotic or something on that level but I don't see how fetching a supplycould be misconstrued.

    Admissions during change of shift

Shift change for us is generally 7:00 with 30 min overlap. Official policy is if the admission arrives after 6:30, the off-going nurse has to get them settled and make sure they are basically stable, get vital signs and get them hooked up to tele. Ev...

    Will I ever feel confident?

And confidence is a process. I remember after a few months encountering a situations and just having the realization that I knew what to do and that it would work. Good luck!
  19. I'm not in wisconsin so I don't know if it"s different out there; in MA you would have serious bias both as a new grad and as over 50. I'm not a guy but as far as I can tell being male has not negatively impacted hiring for anyone I know. One caveat;...

    Blood on my hands

Sounds like you've got the stuff to do the job and she was lucky you were there. As for being given info regarding her condition following the accident as other posters have stated, confidentiality policies would prevent that. I might have given my c...

It may well be a very good sign-for the dying person.

Do you do venipunctures as a nurse?

FWIW, I work med/surg at a major metro hosp. We have an IV team. Although the RN's start their own IV's in ER and critical care units, on the floors we are not supposed to unless given specific clearence.

    THAT Moment...

Even after over 10 years I need to remember from time to time just why it was that I went into nursing. Very humbling; thank you for that reminder.
  24. When this happened to me I asked the Charge and ANM if our facility had any policy regarding this and we did not. They said it was up to me. I asked that my charge RN explain the situation to the family as a neutral party and ask if they would be mor...
