  1. Personal emergency...forget how to be a nurse?

And a P.S.: I have a dog expecting puppies in 16 days. I KNOW I'm going to be of no help there I will be such an emotional basket case. That puppy is my other baby, and she's having
  2. Personal emergency...forget how to be a nurse?

I can clean up someone else's limb when it isn't even attached to their body any longer. Have never lost my cool in the ER. But I passed out in recovery after my son's perfectly normal T&A. And...
  3. Strange things found on (or in) a pt.

Double A battery shoved up the end of a Foley cath (where it connects to the bag tubing). Hey! It was leaking. What else was I supposed to do? I sterilized it with alcohol first. Lucky he didn't...
  4. er visitors...a funny

My favorite of all: Lecherous Larry: Attempts to flirt with every nurse in front of his six month pregnant baby's mama who is in to be seen for the STD he gave her. Oooh, yeah...he's sexy!
  5. Stupidest reason to go to ER

Wow! Don't you just hate it when they start pulling out bags and containers? Never know what they're gonna have. My favorite is the vomit in the tupperware bowel. Think they wash and reuse
  6. er visitors...a funny

And the visitors I spent my day with today: Listening Linda: Sits in the room and listens to the nurses' personal conversations (who are at the desk) and adds her own comments/opinions from the room....
  7. Attention all ER Travelers!!

i have nothing of signifigance to post. i just loved this statement: "those small er's do go from boredom to sheer terror in an instant!" you so decribed why i love what i do!! its the ultimate...
  8. er visitors...a funny

Hungry Hungry Hippo: The visitor who tells you repeatedly how they haven't eaten a thing all day and how weak they are becoming. Of course this is told to you in front of their family...
  9. "Just the good old Boys"

My hospital in TN just had a meeting with nursing leadership on what signs to look for and how to discourage organizing. The letters are going out in my state as well. So far I've only heard of RNs...
  10. Stupidest reason to go to ER

Just today: brought in by ambulance 40ish perfectly healthy female. C/o itchy, red eyes x 2 wks. Can you say spring time in Tennessee? Come one lady! Ambulance ride for seasonal allergies? And...
  11. Strangest thing you've heard a co-worker or patient say?

First year of nursing. How young and naive I was then. Had an middle aged "gentleman" in full blown DT's: combative, hallucinations, etc. Required 4 point restraints. As I'm tying him to the bed, he...
  12. What does your head nurse need to know?

Please don't stand so close to me when you talk to me! The only people who have permission to invade my personal space in such a way either came out of my womb or are currently sleeping with me! It...
  13. The role of a LPN in the ER

I am an LPN in the ER. Here in Tennessee many of the smaller hospitals use us as the second nurse in the ER from 11a-11p. I do a lot of the same work the RN does. The exceptions are: triage (but...
  14. Student Opportunities in TN

Try Baptist in Huntingdon as well. Unless you are opposed to working in a small hospital. You can learn a lot there. Good luck. If you're interested pm me and I can tell you how to get in touch...
  15. NG Tube Yields 2000 ml Immediately

The RN that I work with in the ER actually runs and hides if she sees an order for NGT to be dropped. She will stay hidden until I have it done. What's the big deal? We do a lot worse things...
  16. Transfer at change of shift?

Keep in mind, I work in an 8 bed ER. Approx 40 bed facility. But this is a question we have pondered in our ER on several occasions. My shift is 11a-11p so I am there for shift change at 7p and we DO...
  17. Peeves at work

I really only have one pet peeve: Nurses (or should I say specifically ONE nurse?) who don't even LIKE people, little alone CARE about them! Why, oh why, would you choose nursing for a profession? I...
  18. Have you reported each needlestick injury?

Have found out on a couple of occasions while drawing up meds, blunt needles aren't too blunt to stick in my finger. Nope, don't report the clean sticks. Just stick on a band-aid and back to work. Had...
  19. I need encouragement.....

Isn't it amazing how easily well intentioned mothers can destroy our self confidence? And no matter our age and accomplishments, one little criticism from mom can turn us back into insecure children?...
  20. i've been trying for almost 10 years now ..

Oh my Gosh!!! You are so close. Don't give up. Just retake the clinicals. You now know how the CPNE works. It shouldn't be as intimidating a second time. Of course it is expensive to retake, but I...
  21. Anybody else work with a "super nurse?"

I worked with one. Very attractive, taller than average, great body. Nails always manicured and lipstick never faded. Could out work all of us and her hair looked as good at the end of a 12 hour shift...
  22. Why do people abuse nurses?

I took two cussings just last night because of length of stay issues in our ER (another thread on its own). One of the irate pts actually came out into the hallway and was hollering to all the other...
  23. I'm in a small, rural area so I don't have to deal with nearly as many homeless as those of you in large urban areas. My question is: What do you do with them at discharge? Do you just discharge...
  24. How do you treat Meth OD?

Just curious. As popular as it is in this part of the country, I'm very thankful I've only seen one meth OD so far. I'm sure it won't be the last. Just wondering if we went about treating the right...
  25. Do you just turn the homeless back out onto the streets?

I'm the OP and I want to thank all of you that replied to my post. And thank you for reassuring me that I'm not a naive idiot as my co-workers had made me feel last Sunday. I had two nurses, a lab...
