I work about 45 min/hr from Killeen and make $24.15/hr days in LTC. I have almost 9 yrs experience. Most of my coworkers carpool to my facility from Killeen because the pay is much better the closer you get to Austin. Hope that helps.

Maybe I'm just naive, but I can't for the life of me figure out why some people can't/won't allow others to believe the way that suits them best. I am an Atheist and work closely with a Christian and a Muslim and we are all aware of each others fait...

This is why I work for a non-profit facility, and would work for The Golden Arches before I EVER work for a for-profit facility again. Raises are based on performance/attendance, and it's common to get a 3% raise annually. We also get Christmas bonu...
What tricks of the trade do you have for re-directing Alzheimer's or behavior pts? There are 2 in particular on my unit that drive me up the wall! One is so very fixated on "going home" that it seems no amount of attempts at redirecting will work. ...

I know exactly where you're coming from. My mother was murdered almost 2 years ago. That experience has forever changed how I view the world, people, process emotions, etc. My dad died of natural causes almost 9 years ago now, and comparing the two ...

One sign you won't pass is when you see your pharmacy consultant shaking her head muttering to herself and madly scribbling in her notebook every time she opens a med cart drawer.

Hygiene Queen: I think it has to be reported to state because it was a piece of equipment that caused the injury, not the transfer itself. I wouldn't quote me on that as I'm not entirely sure.
There has been a seriously confusing issue with the count on a bottle of narcs over the weekend. I will attempt to outline the issue. Keep in mind that the scheduled dose for this med is TID, 7a-1p-6p. No PRN's have been signed out on this medication...
I would call the family and have them request a send out to the ER then call the MD and get the order so that she can be treated ASAP. She shouldn't have to die d/t a squabble over policy.
I have had some interesting experiences as an atheist nurse, if not downright puzzling. What follows is but a few of the many interactions that I have encountered. When pressed for an answer to the question "What church do you belong to?" and I divul...

The only time I've heard of anyone losing their license is d/t diverting narcotics/drug abuse. Even then, in most cases they've had to register with the state and comply with the monitoring program. If they fail to comply then yes, their license is s...

I have 1 sheet (a triplicate copy) to fill out basic info like who/what/when/where/how. A note goes in the MD book. (They do daily rounds M-F) call family. Chart in eMAR. We initiate our own tx's and add them to eTAR, and put in on the 24 hr report. ...

People in general can be judgmental with and without religion. I would caution you to not become judgmental yourself and alienate entire groups of people because of a bad experience with one. I have learned so many enlightening and inspiring points ...

I understand that. I happen to work for a religion-based facility, so obviously there are many religion based goings on. I obviously knew that going in and don't have a problem with it so long as I am allowed to politely decline invitations without r...

Agreed. I've obviously been doing it wrong. No wonder I'm exhausted after a shift! What with all of the extra work of doing assessments, calling doctors, implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of ordered treatment and whatnot. I'm looking forw...
Sounds bad, but it's true. I was reflecting on past residents, particularly the ones that made providing adequate nursing care a nearly insurmountable personal challenge. Case in point: I had charge of a 60-something convicted child molester who was ...

This was a few years ago. I was just reflecting on some of the more difficult moments in my career. The individual I was referring to did not register as ordered for several years as we found out, and my DON reported him hoping to get rid of him. His...
I haven't had PF, but suffer from Achilles tendonitis here and there. However, my husband has been battling with PF for several weeks and it's killing him. (Not enough to go the doctor, of course.) He just bought a pair of orthotic inserts and they s...

This. Especially nights. I just worked a 2a-2p on Wednesday to cover for a MIA night nurse and I can still feel it. If I did 2 shifts back to back I'd need the 5 days off to recover. I'm all about my own quality of life, and 12's/doubles run counter...

We have an attendance policy, but it isn't enforced (unless they're trying to get rid of you, then suddenly it's all by the book.) The prevailing culture seems to be show up if you want, when you want. One CNA in particular has no call/no showed twi...

In situations such as that, (and I've had my share) I'd start a breathing tx if ordered and put them in the high Fower's position (as high as possible without them slumping over anyway) while staying at bedside to monitor O2 sats or for further degra...
So, ummm, lemme get this straight: CNA's are "setting up" nurses to lose their job and possibly license? Exactly how are they going to accomplish that? The only ways that I can think of are neglecting residents themselves if not outright injuring the...
