She's in DKA, diabetic ketoacidosis. Her blood pH tells you this. They are adding dextrose to her IVF because they do not want to drop her blood glucose too quickly. She is no doubt also getting an insulin drip. Dropping too quickly can cause a fluid...
Coming from a staff RN who works with many NP's: I love working with NP's and am very happy when a service I have to work with has one because I find them more accessible, respectful, helpful, and usually more empathetic to my situation. They have be...
NO, no, no. The whole point of the air shot is to prime the needle. If you do not see insulin shoot out of the air shot, you need to repeat until you do. When the cartridge is new, it could take several times.
My understanding is that the reason it's not officially approved for those over age 49 is that there has been inadequate testing for efficacy; it's not about safety. There's no reason to believe it's not as effective in that age group, the numbers ju...
How does "per diem" work at your hospital? Are there minimum requirements? Do you get a higher hourly rate? Benefits? How does scheduling work? Do you work on more than one unit?
We are forced to orient to charge after being there one year. It pays nothing extra. On weekends or nights, you must also take a full patient load while "charging". Most people hate it. It's a lot of extra work and grief for absolutely nothing.

I would just like to forewarn you that once you get into nursing courses, you will be responsible for reams and reams of material that will not be covered or "taught". I'm talking hundreds and hundreds of pages per week. You will have to become an ...

A&P lays some groundwork, but it's nothing like your real nursing classes will be. It's just something to get through. I doesn't tell you a thing about whether or not you're suited to nursing or still want to do it. If this is the only experie...
It's sounds like you're done with this marriage. He cheated on you first? Does that mean that you've cheated on him in the past? Sounds like a lot of poison in the water. I don't think we do kids any favors by staying in a bad marriage. After all...
Do some people really get pens supplied by their work?? Wow, who knew? We got one once during nurse's week. It was so special. It had a light on it that worked for two days.
You know how you can spot a true RN? When they ask you a question that makes you say, Are you a nurse? And they hesitate and then almost imperceptibly nod their head or very quietly say, uh huh. It's the ones who didn't really want to tell you.
You know what's kinda fun with these families? Do something while they are out on a coffee break or in the restroom, so you know it's not in their notebook. Maybe it's just me, but I find that very satisfying.
The stalker. They sneak up behind you, and when you turn around you almost run into them. They ask for something, in an over-polite, ingratiating, way, that is totally manipulative - if you're fooled, you think, well if I do this one thing for them...
My hospital chose not to follow the CDC guidelines for about 3 weeks, during which time I got the virus. Now, we are using reusable respirators (what a pain!), which I question the purpose of, once one has had the virus/been vaccinated. I really thi...
