  1. Although I started pre-reqs a couple years prior, I finally started actual nursing school at 44 years old.
  2. How to respond when residents say "I love you" (in a family way)

I work in a memory care unit with all dementia patients. Management has stressed that we are to do all we can to make them feel safe and loved, so if they say it, so do I....usually because I really do.
  3. Remember the Geri-Chair?

Great story, Juan sounds like a one-of-a-kind! We are restraint-free and our folks that need those kind of chairs are in Brodas, but I do remember the geri-chair.
  4. Started LPN school at 44 years old. Oldest in my class was in her mid-50's as I recall!
  5. My AL facility admin have lost their minds.

Sounds like a nightmare! Good luck with your job search!
  6. I don't have time to pee!

If I gotta go pee, I make time to hit the restroom...my bladder is not forgiving of being denied the chance to void.
  7. Nurse's Week Gifts from Employers

I got a new admit on a short-staffed day at my AL.
  8. LTC's are a joke

This is my experience as well!
  9. I too had a raging case of sinusitis this week and was prescribed Augmentin. The NP said to take it with a probiotic and I thought, "I've never had a problem with abx...why should I start taking probiotics now?" Whereupon I was promptly hit in the ...
  10. Alzheimer's Attack: Coping as Family & Nurse

Ask the Alzheimer's patient what they're confused about?! Are you sure you're talking about the same disease that's the topic of this thread?
  11. LTC is Great

    Great post, thank you! :)
  12. How much do you make 2016

LPN of 4.5 years working at a small chain AL in NE Indiana. $17.24/hr day shift, $1 differential eves, $2 differential nocs. Seems that this area of the Midwest doesn't pay very well at all. I previously lived in Ohio in an economically depressed ...
  13. AL vs. LTC

NO WAY at my AL would a resident be allowed to keep a big claw hammer in their room, let alone a whole tool box! Wow...disaster waiting to happen. You made the right choice.
  14. Facility refuses to give raises

My raise this year (working AL) was 24 cents.
  15. What is the starting salary for nursing home LPN/LVMs?

I started at $14.25/hr in NW Ohio, prn with no benefits or call-in pay, .50/hr shift differential weekends/noc, $1/hr weekends. I keep a (very) part-time aide position to get call-in pay.
  16. LPN working CNA shifts??

Brandon...I get that *all* care falls under the nursing umbrella; I can and do provide that kind of care every time I work in either role, and am not in the least allergic to wiping poop or cleaning up puke. But if, as you say, I am still working as...
  17. LPN working CNA shifts??

I am in the same boat as the OP,LPN with a part-time position as an aide every other weekend. I do aide work when I'm a nurse and nurse work when I'm an aide. Don't mind wiping butt with the best of 'em, but I do it as little as possible because I ...
  18. The Elderly Are Devalued

Those that devalue the elderly are not old and frail yet. I have been a LTC LPN for a year now and while I'm still new, I can't for the life of me understand how it's perceived as being less stressful in LTC when we have a higher patient load than a...
  19. Should I wear support hose?

Hmmmm...maybe this would help my feet, which are sometimes puffy and almost always painful by the end of the shift. TEDS or support hose? How do you know what size to buy? Knee-high or thigh-high? I already have spider-vein legs...pain control, n...
  20. Nursing Student & Working....HOW!!???!!

Absolutely agree with 2ndyearstudent. Your making it through nursing school depends on a lot of variables that won't be exactly the same as anyone else's experience. You will know what you can handle after a quarter/semester or so. I'm surprised t...
  21. Oh dear.

Ditto here. We have two hospitals in our town, one fairly large and the other a little smaller. The smaller one posts the ER wait times on their website (and even on electronic billboards around town!).
  22. Thank you Mrs. O

This is a testament to the difference one person can make in a child's life. Not all nursing is done at the bedside and Mrs. O surely knew this. God bless her for her care, and God bless you for paying it forward. :redbeathe
  23. Daytonite has passed away...

I always read Daytonite's posts with interest and learned from every one. Nursing has lost someone very special.
  24. Surely I can't be the only one cruising this board? Most CNA's I see posting on here are either in/want to be in training, working in LTC or hospital. What's your job like? I work for the kind of agency that provides housekeeping services along with ...
  25. switching from Nursing home to home health

I worked in hh before I went into long-term. Loved my clients, but my car wasn't loving all the running for my job then to go to school in the evenings (plus our mileage reimbursement wasn't the greatest). My experience was different than macrich84...
