  1. School Nurses: Non-Nursing Tasks????

Let's see: somehow un-stick coat zippers that get stuck clean paint (from art class) out of hair, off of clothes fix flip-flops fix eyeglasses that have been bent beyond recognition ( and I can do that HOW???) snap, fasten, zip pants that kids can'...
  2. Why do parents get mad when you send their kids home???

One year a child was sent to school with a trash can from home, so that if she continued to vomit at school she could use her private vomit container and remain in class. Seriously?? Yes, her parents were "helping" her earn that perfect attendance ...
  3. Countdown....

    22 school days!!! YAHOO!
  4. Food insecurity in your schools?

Our district offers the "Boomerang Backpack" program for our students. It's managed by a high school service group, they fill the bags with nutritious foods to be sent home on Fridays. They had to switch to disposable plastic bags.....because the s...
  5. Help me prepare my resignation?

To be honest, it is doubtful that anything you write will make much of an impact except that there will now be an open position to be filled. My advice would be to keep the letter of resignation short & sweet, and business-like. Anything else c...
  6. Respect....or the lack thereof...(RANT ALERT!)

So Sorry, Fetch! That's just ridiculous! There was a time I'd be demanding a sit-down with admin, or go head-to-head with the teacher nurse-wanna-be & flood her inbox with medical articles, etc....but now - I just want to finish out the school ye...
  7. check for poopy pants???

Hi All, Besides a week of floundering in ISTEP hell, today a little guy (kdg) was sent to me with a note; "please check for poopy pants" I didn't detect an odor (but admittedly my sense of smell isnt very acute) and asked him., "Do you think maybe...
  8. Worst part of being a school nurse

Yeah, I hear you. I think we've ALL been there. It's our last resort, but sadly, sometimes that's what it comes down to. You did the right thing - even though it doesn't feel like it:(
  9. Do you play music in your office?

YES YES YES!! I am allowed to stream music from my computer, so I quietly play music most every day! I think the kids like it, too.
  10. Do You Like Being A School Nurse?

I've worked in LTC, Urgent care, Dr offices, home health ....BUT my 15 yrs in school nursing have been my favorite by far! I'm just looking forward to retirement and some quality time with my grandkids!! Some days are frustrating, as in any job. I...
  11. Do You Like Being A School Nurse?

I have been a school nurse for 15 years....and I'm growing to dislike it. In my case, it's perhaps because I'm retiring this summer and have begun humming my "'We're not gonna take it" song...
  12. Respect....or the lack thereof...(RANT ALERT!)

OK, maybe I'm just getting cranky in my old age, but I've become quite annoyed at the disrespectful actions of a few. My office has 2 doors, and at times staff uses it as a "short cut" - but, that's a practice I've been trying to stop. First, the pr...
  13. 504 meetings?

I can appreciate that not all 504 mtgs need include the nurse - but, I feel that the choice should be mine to make. Why should a non-medical person decide what is medically significant??
  14. Lice-itchy scratchy

Another thought: check out headlice.org ....they have oodles of info AND can even get free downloads. I really like their lice info coloring book.....I use it with the Kindergarten class!
  15. Lice-itchy scratchy

It's very possible there's a re-infestation....or that it wasn't totally eradicated in the first place. Nits are recognizable on a strand of hair vs dandruff because nits won't "fleck off" like dandruff. Lice treatment products tend to be quite dryi...
