  1. Nurses not following Protocols

I started a new casual position in the second LTC facility Ive ever worked in in 4 yrs. Boy, it sure is different from what I'm used to! One of the first things I did on my first day of orientation was go through the policy/procedure book. 2 nurse...
  2. Need LPN advice!

I also originally was going to go for my RN but then realised I would spend probably 2 yrs to upgrade to be accepted and then go on a waiting list. Then I found the LPN program. Didn't know what an LPN did but 1yr full time sounded good. After grad...
  3. Stresssssssed!

Yup, find another job. You won't be able to function effectively or safely. Yes, you'll find another job. But sadly--these pts will still be there receiving inadeqate, unsafe medical attention. Leaving the problem doesn't make that problem go away...
  4. pacify or orientate? Alzheimers...

Story: There was a wonderful resident who could not 'function' in her daily routine because she was always 'looking for her baby' she refused to stay at the table. Wandering, constantaly looking everywhere. She began to lose weight and more agitate...
  5. pacify or orientate? Alzheimers...

Wow!! What a thread. It's like reading responses from all the different coworkers I've worked with meaning - we all have different ideas, opinions, and approaches. Many sound all to familiar. I absolutely love working with dementia. The disease ...
  6. Job Hunting - I don't understand

I just moved back to Vancouver and have been job hunting for over 3 months now. Looking for the right facility. Places that care and follow policies etc. It's hard. I've been on med hunters etc. I found a web site that lists all the extended care...
  7. What have other nurses done that have freaked you out?

I worked with what we called at this facility a 'team leader' for the floor, kind of like a director of care. Any way, she wasn't very good at her job. A group of us were discussing our 'dislike' of the way she performed her job and couldn't figure ...
  8. What have other nurses done that have freaked you out?

Oh good lord, I'm never eating anything at the nurses' station again!!! By the way, at my new casual position at a LTC (privately owned - coincidence??) I've noticed that there are no sinks in the hallways, like you would see in acute care, which is...
  9. LPN Tuition-how much did you pay?

I was just on another thread about this. I mentioned that just yesterday I learned the differences. I took my LPN program in Alberta, Canada. 1 yr full time ~ $ 4,000 at a public college. At that time meds, IV therapy, IM/SQ, physician orders etc...
  10. All Lpn's Please Read

Hey all :) I'm an LPN in Vancouver, BC. I started nursing in Alberta where, in the LTC I worked in we were utilized at full scope. Meds, IMs/SQs, admissions, everything. At the acute care I worked. I did care. O2 therapy, wounds, admissions. That'...
  11. ABout to start LPN program in Vancouver

I just learned yesterday, about the differences in tuition - I went to a public college and paid ~ $4,000.00 for a 1yr FT course 4yrs ago. I was told that some people are paying up to $20,000!! :uhoh21: Is that true?? I wonder what the difference...
  12. What have other nurses done that have freaked you out?

Having to be a strong team leader and role model as part of my job, I've learned that: I can teach someone something new, or show them a more efficient way, or guide someone etc. But there is one thing I CAN NOT teach ...... Common Sense! Too...
  13. What have other nurses done that have freaked you out?

I've just recently started a casual position in a LTC facility. I worked for almost 4 yrs at my previous job. They set a very high standard there. I now see the differences between them. I read policies etc on my first day re narcotic controls an...
  14. What have other nurses done that have freaked you out?

Here's a recent "drugging" story in Alberta, Canada. I copied/pasted from the web: Grande Prairie nurse has pleaded guilty to administering sedatives to her co-workers. Sarah Christine Bowes, 27, was to face a preliminary hearing Monday. Instead sh...
  15. What have other nurses done that have freaked you out?

I work in LTC with dementia residents. I am full scope there. I have also done 3 + yrs in acute on renal and didn't do IVs (or meds for that matter) on that floor and even I would know that that's sooooooo wrong!
