  1. Excelsior College- almost seems too easy

If you went through a decent LVN/LPN program and particularly if you have acute care experience it's pretty easy, at least in MHO. (Except for stats that is :-) ) I passed boards on the 1st try with only 75 questions. don't sweat it.
  2. Would you marry a doctor?

Hey, I'm 48 and haven't given up yet
  3. Would you marry a doctor?

As an addendum, I'd never date anyone I worked with anyway.
  4. Would you marry a doctor?

Unfortunately, I know several women who became nurses simply to find a husband.
  5. New Grad...A must read!!!

Just keep trying & don't give up. I know it's really frustrating. Sometimes it takes a while. I know a lot of people who have had luck with the skilled to acute rehab to acute care (that's what I did in 1981, when I was a new grad & the job...
  6. New Grad...A must read!!!

Sorry, but I've heard all of the above. Keep trying! You might try something like acute rehab & go from there to acute care.
  7. Do you actually wear gloves/gowns/masks ?

With contact precautions, if I'm only going in to check the IV or ask them a quick question & I'm not going to have any contact with the patient or their immediate environment, I admit it, I don't put one on. Gloves & good handwashing though....
  8. Would you marry a doctor?

No way! Especially when you've been around a while I see how often "extracurricular activities" occur.
  9. New York State Mandated Vaccinations

Um, Mark, the vaccine just came out a couple of weeks ago & there have been deaths happening since early this summer.
  10. Warning to New Grads

In the past 30 or so years that I've been a nurse, there have been several feast & famine cycles. they come & go, even without all the political stuff going on now in the background. It's nearly always been difficult for new grads to get de...
  11. Low starting pay for new RN?

Wow! I was paying more than that for a 2 bdr appt in a truly scary neighborhood in 1975!! double wow! (bay area, CA)
  12. Warning to New Grads

    Well said Valerie
  13. New York State Mandated Vaccinations

    Jack, well said!
  14. Warning to New Grads

    California
  15. Warning to New Grads

Just like any other industry, when there is an abundance of workers, if you leave there's always someone to take your place. In my area, when there aren't enough "home grown" nurses, or the "home grown" nurses won't work under the conditions present...
  16. New York State Mandated Vaccinations

Because some people are unable to get the vaccine (ex: allergy), an EEOC case may be helpful--prevented from working due to disability (allergy to the vaccine). You really don't have any rights to speak of, due to the public health nature of the prob...
  17. I took my NCLEX today and I think I failed :-(

    Hang in there!
  18. Warning to New Grads

BTW, I've never seen orientations longer than a week-2 max in skilled. Those long lovely new grad preceptorships & orientations are pretty much only in acute care...& not all of them any more. It's not only frustrating, but can be dangerous...
  19. Warning to New Grads

Good advice, but unfortunately I've found pretty much the same conditions in every SNF I've ever worked for. the only exception was one that didn't accept medicare...so the $ were spent on staff to care for the patients instead of additional staff t...
  20. Low starting pay for new RN?

I'm probably dating myself, but I started at $9.25
  21. Low starting pay for new RN?

Remember, first, salary is VERY dependant on not only your location geographically, but also the type of work you are doing. In the bay area, salaries for experienced RN's vary by over $40/hr depending on what type of nursing you're doing & what...
  22. Question about Excelsior

:-) probably because lots of people did it like I did :chuckle Still, the 3rd nursing exam is fairly far thru the program if you do the pre-req's first.
  23. Fired all the LPN's

I'm so sorry. I certainly never meant it that way. I have had lots of contact with students in accelerated BSN programs & have witnessed multiple student meltdowns because of the pace and pressure involved. Most of the students I've talked to (i...
  24. Fired all the LPN's

I'm glad to hear that. Most folks I've talked to aren't aware of the challenges. Best of luck to you!
  25. Fired all the LPN's

You might want to think about the middle ground...an ADN. Acceleratd programs are VERY challenging.
