  1. Most embarrassing mistake you've ever made

One was the time I learned that when you're changing trach ties-only take one side off at a time & keep hold of them...the patient coughed & his trach bounced off the tv on the wall & hit the MD, who was walking into the room at that mome...
  2. Dear preceptor

Good nurse and senior nurse do not always go together
  3. Dear preceptor

I always feel doubly bad for the new grad when this happens. somehow it seems worse when someone isn't invested in preceptorship at all than when someone really wants to, but is just bad at it.
  4. Dear preceptor

Part of me is curious. Some facilities require nurses to perform in a "leadership" role for staff nurse III or IV status. You may have run across someone who is doing this only to complete thier clinical ladder--not because they want to do it. Also, ...
  5. Excelsior College- almost seems too easy

Excelsior might have something, so you may want to check with them. As far as I know (it's been a while since i did the program) fed loans weren't available.
  6. Excelsior College- almost seems too easy

Savings & the CPNE on visa for me
  7. New Grad...A must read!!!

I'm in the bay area (CA) and it's quite difficult to find a job, but my understanding is that there are many opportunities elsewhere in the state. It may be a similar situation in other areas. The individual may not be in a geographic area that's h...
  8. Private Student Loans

the money I'm speaking of is not through financial aide. Try asking a counselor if there are emergency loans available.
  9. Please use some common sense on Facebook.

there's a site, which I can't remember the name of at the moment (maybe someone else has a better memory than I do) where you can remove at least your phone number and address from a lot of sites as well as google phone book. Just a head's up, for a...
  10. Private Student Loans

Have you tried your college or nursing department/school of nursing? Every college I've been connected with (student or teacher) has funds available. At least give it a try.
  11. Please use some common sense on Facebook.

Is anyone out there listening? We've gotta have a sarcasm font. [sic] doesn't quite have the same affect. Oh, now that I see the prior posts about windows 7--I don't have a TV.
  12. Please use some common sense on Facebook.

That's a great idea, sarcasm font! I'm guessing you're being sarcastic about making Windows 7 though. Is anyone out there listening? We've gotta have a sarcasm font. [sic] doesn't quite have the same affect.
  13. Private Student Loans

If you get a private loan, be very, very careful & research the lender very carefully. Compare the terms to Stafford loans & make sure they won't ask for payments untill a few months (at least) after you graduate.
  14. Private Student Loans

Have you completed a FAFSA? If not, do it right away. The gvt backed student loans are a far better deal than private one's, and much easier to get if you're unemployed. You won't get much at this point in time, but it'll certainly be helpful next s...
  15. Skills that we thought we would never get

The one thing I could never wrap my head around was IV credits. It took me forever! Somehow no one ever simply explained that it was how much was left in the bag at the end of the shift. I'm embarrassed how long it took me to finally figure it out.
  16. Skills that we thought we would never get

I had a major issue with the smell of emesis & had a major fear of doing it myself when I smelled it. I tried to hold my breath, use a mask, peppermint oil under my nose--you name it. Then I finall gave up & walked into the room, smelled it...
  17. Please use some common sense on Facebook.

I know of someone who ended up in major trouble because of social networking posts, but that's all I've heard of. Can these folks spell "career suicide," for starters. Hasn't anyone heard of HIPPA? Argh.
  18. Dear preceptor

Thank you for alerting those of us who precept how our actions can look from the other side. I am truly glad for the reminder and hope my students and preceptees have a better experience than you did. I really hope your situation has improved.
  19. Excelsior College- almost seems too easy

I guess I just test fast
  20. Warning to New Grads

To clarify...I did mean medicare. Not Medicaid or Medi-cal.
  21. Warning to New Grads

Only people who have never dealt with medicare think medicare is wonderful. I once worked in a facility that wouldn't take it...it was amazing. The only paperwork was appropriate & there weren't licensed staff out of care doing nothing but deal...
  22. Excelsior College- almost seems too easy

When you think about it, it's not that bad--even if it's 200 miles away. the tests are mostly only an hour or so every few months. worth thinking about.
  23. Excelsior College- almost seems too easy

What??? I know it was a while back, but when I did it, CPNE was around $2000.00 The tests were around $100-$150 each I think the CPNE prep was around $350 (worth it) I think the CPNE video was around $100 (NOT WORTH IT) Books were a couple hundred I...
  24. Question about Excelsior

Things may have changed, so if someone has more recent information, please let us know. When I took the tests, I wasn't enrolled, but Excelsior sent me the number to give Pearson when I paid for the tests. You can get the books anywhere you want, the...
  25. Excelsior College- almost seems too easy

I took a test about every 3 or 4 months for the nursing classes & about every 6 months for micro, A & P, lifespan and stats. I did end up taking about a year and a half off in the middle because of life stuff. I did have pretty much all the o...
