    Panic over Patho!

I agree, the only way to handle patho is spending tons of time on it. It was the one class where I read almost everything assigned. It was the only way to learn the content. The book is really dense, so it is not quick reading. Don't get behind becau...

Where are all those desperate new grads?

I get forwarded job openings all of the time from my local NAPNAP group. You might want to try NP associations instead of schools. I know I never check my school email address anymore. And a lot of the my classmates didn't want to apply for jobs unti...

Does nursing really suck that badly?

I was a lawyer, then became a nurse and am now an NP. I love nursing. But it is our profession and we can make it bad or we can make it good. I have always been amazed by the number of my coworkers who were completely willing to spends hours complain...

starting a new job before or after i take my board?

I believe you do not have malpractice coverage until you're credentialed, which means you should not be touching any patients or doing anything other than shadowing until you're credentialed. I spent my first 6 weeks of work not credentialed and I th...
  6. I think it's fine, except make sure you plan the three weeks before you take boards so that there is no wedding planning those weeks. You will need dedicated study time and time to focus on passing boards. Other than that, you'll be fine:)

Which, if any, national organizations should i join?

I really enjoy being a NAPNAP member. You can go to the local meetings wherever you end up even if you start at a different chapter. I found AANP to be too FNP focused so I dropped my membership with them. ANA is fine, but too expensive and I didn't ...

University South Alabama PNP program question

Don't worry about not having recent peds experience, you'll be fine. I would not consider an online program a work at your own pace type of thing, you will be studying every time you are not working. there is A LOT to learn. Patho will be your most t...

    Acute Care Pediatric NP

I went to UAB and feel like I learned what I needed to. UTA's program does not provide a good critical care education, so if that is your focus I would not recommend them. UAB isn't as strong as Penn's peds critical care program, but Penn is not onli...

Work as NP and bedside nurse

If there is a state statue that specifically addresses the liability incurred by an NP who is working as an RN, then that would be persuasive in court. However, I have never seen a statute that addresses it. What I have seen are statutes that discu...

    Collaborating physician problems

I'm so sorry your first job is going like this. I had a very similar experience in my first professional job, I was a lawyer at the time and my boss was a terrible person. I think she enjoyed making me cry and belittling my work. I was a new lawyer a...

    New NP mistake

NP education in the clinical environment is done so differently than medical education. I think as we precept NP students we need to be mindful of this. I was really glad I spent a semester of clinicals with MDs, because the way they taught was so di...

Work as NP and bedside nurse

The BoN doesn't have any say over your liability, it is a legal standard. If you work as an RN but have an NP license you will be held to the knowledge and expertise of that of an NP if you ever got sued. However, it does not change the scope of prac...

    NP starting salary

NP salaries around Philly are low. I think that sounds like an average starting salary for the area.

    Clinical hour requirements

Can you travel and do a bunch of hours somewhere else? A lot of my classmates went and did hours in another state. I loved my MD preceptors, but you definitely need at least half of your hours with NPs, because we think and work differently.

ICU NP hours, salary, program info

I am a brand new PICU NP (still on orientation). Salary and benefits sounds similar, but we do not get extra pay for night/weekends/holidays. We do get extra pay if we pick up an extra "overtime" shift, just to encourage people to pick up holes in ...

How to become a Nurse Practioner?

I agree a lot of it depends on what type of NP work you want to do. Are you planning on working as an RN while you're in school?

    NP vs OT

Nursing is a fabulous profession with tons of options. Yes, it would take you longer to reach your end goal than OT, but you'd have more future job options. My knowledge of OT is just my interaction with them in the hospital, but it seems like they...

Thinking about NP school, appreciate input

To switch NP specialties you have to complete a post-master's certificate, which usually takes about a year. You have to do all of the required clinicals, so I think it would be difficult to complete in a year and still work full-time, but it's poss...

Which NP specialization is appropriate for nursing homes?

Why do you think those are missing something? I think the ANP/G would be the most appropriate. I'm not familiar with nursing homes so much, but a PA basically ran the long-term care unit I was in during school. I think it's a place where an NP/PA ...

How can I prep for grad school?

My advice is to get the McCance and Huether patho book and start reading. Every MSN patho class I know of uses that book. It's huge and we read almost the whole thing in one semester. It would have been great to have at least read the chapters I'm in...
  24. Something else to think about when considering grad school is whether or not you're really ready to dedicate yourself to it. Think about why you got the low grades in undergrad and determine if things would be better for you in grad school. NP school...
  25. I only had 5 months of nursing experience when I applied for school and had no trouble getting in. The Dean of MUSC is a big supporter of nurses advancing their education without having to have worked as an RN first. So I agree that it would be a goo...
