  1. I'm older than you. Second career. I am off orientation 6 or 7 weeks and feel I can't do anything right. I've missed this site because it was down when I started feeling this way and is just getting worse. My job has been super nice with coaching, I just can't get out of my own head. You are not alone. Right now I'm wondering if I should go back to the original career. It's not looking so stressful anymore.
  2. One of my patients handed out cards with a scratch off lottery ticket. I won $5.
  3. Thanks. I've tried some and they weren't very good. Will definitely look into these.
  4. The last paragraph about the team from the top rated Texas Children's hospital coming to evaluate them. I believe Jen Arnold (From TLC's who "The Little Couple" might have been one of those people. On the show she moved from Houston to St. Pete's to become that hospital's medical director of healthcare simulation.
  5. Not that long ago there was a television program about three kids who got amoebas from swimming in lakes. Two died. From what I recall, southern states.
  6. In my school you couldn't change groups. Unless you get assigned a project together, it's possible to get through a semester with minimal interaction. Every group I was ever in seemed to split by gender. It will all work out. :)
  7. First few weeks it needs to be kept moist. If it dries, it gets itchy. Scratching can remove scabs and cause possible infection. Lots if care involved for the first few weeks. Like caring for lots if punctures.
  8. This! I was trying to take my MIL in for a bad cough. It got so bad I had no choice but to go to the ER.
  9. This is so true. I started my job the month after you. I dreaded going to work, but liked it once I got there. I was miserable. Confidence came and went. I read all about the first year on here. So I made it past my probationary period. Listened to my preceptor train an experienced nurse whose experience was in a different specialty. That nurse made mistakes just like I did. It was an eye opener for me. Ironically you're in my dream specialty. I found something else. I can only reiterate what others have said about seeing someone. Maybe research other areas that may be of interest to you. So many areas. Just look through specialties on this site. Chin up and nurse on.
  10. My main stressor. The cost. One side of the family buys for everyone. So instead of just getting together and doing a sane secret Santa, I have to try and figure out what to get for 20 people. I'd rather just bring some food and cookies I've made and enjoy the company. Every January I look at the credit card bills and have buyer's remorse. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. I might just have to deal with the guilt of taking and not giving because I cannot figure out what to buy this year. I just need the madness to stop.
  11. A good stethoscope. A penlight. Pencils and highlighters. Index cards. Look at the study guide. Read the required reading. Make sure you know everything on the study guide. Answer tons of questions on your topics. I went to a nursing site that had a ton of free questions. Oh and just fair warning. You won't have a life till you graduate. Well maybe till you finish orientation on your first job. Best of luck to you.
  12. Longer needle?
  13. You do understand a hospital is a business. They need people to come there to make money. They want to smooth over the customer, not irritate them. Word of mouth is very powerful. A reputation once lost is hard to regain. You're going to find rude customers in virtually every business sector. No getting away from it. Unless the behavior puts employees in danger, administration us always going to try and keep them happy. People are going to be rude and employees cost money, not bring it in. So I learned from many years in business services.
  14. Hi Damion, another great article. Very relevant to me as I'm a new nurse after a longish career in another field. In my first job and passed the training. For me time management is the biggest issue. It really depends on what discipline you're working. ?
  15. I wear Nursemates Alighn and my Danskos. Although for me the NM sneakers are better for standing and the Danskos are better for walking. I told two co-workers about the socks and they swear by them now. I get Sockwells off of Amazon
  16. This! I use a different medication. Whatever works for you.
  17. I'm a new nurse and honestly this post could not have come at a better time. I dread going in, but love the job once I'm there. Seriously doubt my abilities and beat myself up for not doing better. I've been in this cycle for a week. My silver lining is my great boss and the awesome people I work with. I've read some not so great experiences on here and am grateful for my supportive environment. :)
  18. Went out one year. That was it for me. Between the crowds and the merchandise piled very high in the aisles, it was pretty darn scary. Might have needed EMS in case of trampling or avalanche of television boxes. I prefer my shopping from the safety of my couch.
  19. Generally these logons are in the works before your first day. Using a system conversion is not an excuse. IT needs the appropriate permissions from someone in management as part of security and then its a matter of minutes to create an ID. Been through this multiple times over my career with many different companies and it seems this is pretty standard. Someone is yanking your chain. If they're this disorganized getting you and ID and not even teaching you the system, the disorganization will probably carry over into other functions. Doesn't sound like a good place to work for. Are they not going to pay you because you're not in the system?
  20. This and remember SBAR from school. It should help you frame your conversations. I'm new myself and just made my first call to a doctor this week. I wrote it all out with a co-worker and well it was Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation. I hadn't realized I'd done it until I looked at it. If you have a few minutes maybe try and write out what you're going to say. Have the vitals. Baseline should be in their binder/file. It's tough to get your sea legs, so to speak. You're not alone. Chin up and nurse on!
  21. I just graduated in May. I wanted either burns or oncology. Truth is I was only able to find one part time job in what I thought I wanted. As I interviewed, I learned about other areas by applying to jobs that specified "New Grads Welcome." I found something I hadn't considered and actually really like. Only two people in my class got their dream specialty. I wouldn't say to take the first job offer, but to be open to other opportunities. Best of luck to you.
  22. New rules require veteran nurses to go back to college as RN-BSN programs flourish | NJ.com I can't say I disagree with you. I have a Graduate degree in another discipline so I don't need to take many classes, but have to go for a BSN myself. Put in place by our former governor. Maybe you saw his beach photos?
  23. Look for jobs that state "New Graduates Welcome" and read the duties to see what is to your liking. I did thus when I passed the NCLEX earlier this year. For me the vast majority of jobs were not in a hospital.
  24. You're right Farawyn. I'm new to nursing, but not new to the behavior. My last corporate job, every so often someone went off the rails. It followed a pattern. Ticked at the world and loud complaints. One day escalates to shouting and physically attacking someone. Employees attempt subdue, security called and sometimes police. Not one employee had the sympathy members of this forum do. Maybe it comes with understanding? That being said, the guy deserves the same charges as anyone who assaults a co-worker. At least the guy recognized it was time to retire, however that doesn't invalidate his actions.
