Private duty nursing in Pennsylvania?

Hello all,

I'm seeking any info on private duty nursing. I'm an LPN and I've been doing private duty nursing (Homecare) through an agency for the last 5 yrs with the same patient. The patient parents told me they would cut out the agency and hire me solely. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Check if you signed a contract with your agency when you hired on. Some agency contracts have a clause that prohibits an employed nurse from taking on an agency pt as a private pt.

They may be able to charge you a penalty fee (NOT CHEAP!) for your 'stealing' the pt.

In addition to checking on the non-compete clause, see what they intend to pay you. There will be substantial savings by cutting out the agency if the client goes private pay, but that does not mean that they will be offering you the difference, or even a substantial amount of the difference. Make certain that you draw up a written contract that also specifies which party will be taking out the employment taxes. And look into your requirement to pay quarterly estimated taxes to the IRS.

And as an LPN you require RN oversight to write the care plan and supervise your practice. You need to account for this in your costs

Just how many how are you intending to cover? Who will be covering the other hours? What happens if you need a day off for sick?

There are multiple things to consider when trying to make this kind of employment switch.

Also, remember to contact your carrier for the changes.
