is a prison a good place to work?

Published

I graduate next Aug, and was thinking about working at a local prison. Do you think that's a good idea or should i stick to a hospital position first for awhile?

I'm open to any suggestions

Well I started to work in one as a side job, however the budget had been cut by the city and there were not nearly enough guards to make it a safe environment. I assume there are some safe places, just make sure there are enough guards to keep YOU safe! :nuke:

I would say go for it, if that's something you're interested in trying. If it doesn't work out, you can always go somewhere else. Good luck!

I'd be too scared to work prison. Surrounded by criminals and you are the one with the drug cart?

no thanks.

In the prisons I've been in (as a medic) you and the drug cart stay in a secure area and the inmates come to you. I used to respond to a state prison outside Philly, we had to be let through so many doors to get to the infirmary it wasn't funny. One guard escort in, 3 guard escort out, with the prisoner shackled and belted.

My advice is to get a good year of solid clinical experiences in med-surg, ER or ICU before you start working in the correctional setting.

It will make you a more effective nurse since you will have a solid base for your decision making.
