Prior Service Army Returning as an RN?

Published

Has anyone or does anyone know someone who has left the AD Army as an officer in a basic branch and come back in as an Army Nurse? The FNEP program doesn't fit what I want to do, but I'd like to return to the service if possible. Thanks for any advice anyone has!

0402,

Understandable, good luck : ) Talk to plenty of Navy Reserve RNs before you decide to join up again. I know a RN who was going to go Navy but decided to go Army because her friend was a Navy Reserve RN and he told her that they deploy alot, more than the Army does. I dont know this for fact other than what was told to me 3d person. Just check it out : )

I am a prior service Army RN (almost 14 years, in the Reserves now) and I'm trying to get back in. I know that PS folks are in a different pool that NPS and the decisions are made separately based on the mission. I just don't know how many they need this year (if any) and how much PS is too much or too little. My recruiter says it's a gamble, but one that's definitely worth it. I agree, but I don't feel good about my chances.

ArmyRN,

Every Recruiter has their opinion but I dont like using the word "gamble" when talking to a potential applicant. I just put in a 49 yr old PA who had 13 yrs prior service. When putting together packets there is no seperate board/pool for PS or NPS applicants. All are boarded collectively and based on their individual merit. I think the Recruiter may have been thinking about your age when he/she said it was a gamble. What is your current position? Med Surg/ER/ICU etc... Also, how old are you?

You aren't in Hawaii by any chance are you? I'm currently 40 so not sure if I need a waiver. I think mentioned that I might. I have 13 years and nine months TIS. I am a 66H with no ASI's.

ARmyRN,

With your age and service years you are good. Are you in Hawaii?? I see that you stated 66H, are you currently in the Reserve?

I used to live in HI and talked to a SFC Jimenez there. Thought it might be you. Doubt you would remember me though :). Yes, I am currently in the Reserves. Will that make a difference? They have already signed off on my DA 368.

Nope, never been stationed in Hawaii : (

What is the name of the AMEDD Recruiter you are working with?

So will being in the R eserves help at all? Are they letting any 66H's back in this year? Btw, sorry for hijacking this thread from the OP :).

ArmyRn,

Each year we get new slots for Active/Reserve. This current FY we put quite a few Reserve Nurses on Active Duty. We have a few scheduled for the new FY. New RNs/Reserve RNs/PS RNs are all competing for the same slots.

What OP??

Original poster :). So you say there are a few slots. Is that just for your area or is that service wide?

I didnt mean to insinuate only a few slots, only that we put a few Reserve RNs on Active Duty. Last year there were 100 Active Duty Nursing slots available. I presume that it will be the same this year.

Who is your Recruiter out there?
