prior convictions

Can anyone give me any advice when it comes to my prior convictions of assault in 1996. I will be applying for my license soon and would like to know if anyone has been denied because of past assault charges or even if anyone has been granted there license with this type of prior conviction. I have tried contacting the BON but they seem to allways give me the same answer " every case is looked at individually" Any kind of help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Please do a search and refer to the other large number of threads on this topic.

Most of them come down to the answer, "the BON looks at each case individually", which means exactly what it says. None of us here can give you an accurate answer, because indeed the BON of each state does weigh each case, the factors, age of the conviction and its circumstances. Any answer that we give is merely supposition.

While I know that this is aggravating situation and it makes one feel a bit helpless, it is how the BON works for the safety of the patients and the maintaining of professional nursing standards.

Yes, this is your best bet. A search is great, but ultimately you will need to contact you BON (they can answer your question much better), good luck to you.

from this point on who asks this same question should give us all the pertinant information so we can give our honest opinion as to whether they should be granted their license. It could actually turn into some fun for the rest of us.

Not trying to be insensitive, (again), but it seems funny the amount of these posts that keep coming up. The answers are always the same...call your State BON...........

At least if we have the dirty details we can in our own minds play judge and jury and give these folks what they are asking for..."our opinion".

Good luck to you in your quest...dave :)

So here are the dirty details.....in 1995 i got into a fight with some guy and was convited of assault, in 1996 i got into a push match with my girlfriend at the time and plead no contest to domestic violence. Since then I have never been into any kind of trouble and have lead a completely opposite life.

So I was just wondering if anybody on this site has been through what I have and continued on to received theiir license or know someone who has been in my situation.

Thanks

As a hospital recruiter, I would not only check with your BON, but also check with some prospective employers in the area you wish to work when you graduate to see if they would consider hiring you with your prior convictions. Unfortunately, the hospital I recruit for would not hire someone with past assault or domestic violence convictions.

I do believe in a person's ability to change in a meaningful and positive manner, but policy is policy, and I'd advise you to do some investigating before you commit to nursing school. It would be terrible if you invested the time, money and energy it takes to get through school and get licensed, only to find that you can't get a position in your area.

Best wishes for the future!

Jami,

If they are expunged would I have to submit them on an application for a recruiter like yourself........

Thank you

You don't have to submit them if they have been expunged. And they can't technically be used against you if they have been expunged, but FYI -- they do still show up on background checks.

Do recruiter and hospitals actually run an extensive background check on you the way that the BON does? I do plan on submitting my background to the BON but wasn't sure if it had to be done for the actual recruiters and or hospitals....

Thanks again Jami, just trying to understand it all.

Most hospitals run a background check. I believe it is a JCAHO requirement. I don't think all nursing homes do them, though.
